How to get my unemployment benefits approved through Washington ESD
I lost my job 2 weeks ago and I'm completely lost on how to actually get my unemployment going. I know I need to file with Washington ESD but their website is confusing and I keep seeing different information about what I need to do. Do I just fill out the application and wait? What about weekly claims? I'm already behind on rent and really need to get this process moving. Has anyone been through this recently who can walk me through the actual steps?

First thing - go to esd.wa.gov and click 'Apply for Benefits' to start your initial claim. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the past 18 months, and reason for job separation. After your claim is filed, you have to file weekly claims every week to get paid, even while your claim is being processed.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait for approval before I start filing weekly claims? And how long does the approval usually take?

Amara Okafor
•No, start filing weekly claims immediately after your initial application. Approval can take 2-4 weeks, but you'll get backpay for all the weeks you filed if approved.

Make sure you have all your employer info ready - dates of employment, wages, and exact reason you left each job. Washington ESD will verify everything with your employers so be accurate. Also you'll need to register with WorkSource within a few weeks of filing.

•What happens if I can't remember exact dates from like a year ago? Will they reject my claim?

CaptainAwesome
•Do your best with approximate dates. You can always provide corrections later if needed. The important thing is to get your claim filed.

I went through this same process last month and honestly the hardest part was actually talking to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions. Their phone lines are constantly busy and I kept getting disconnected. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to ESD agents. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•That sounds really helpful! Did you have to pay a lot for it?

•It's worth it when you need to actually speak with someone. Much better than spending entire days redialing busy signals.

•I've heard of Claimyr too. My neighbor used it when her claim got stuck in adjudication. Said it was the only way she could get through to find out what was holding things up.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. WorkSource has good resources for this.

•Do I need to start job searching immediately or can I wait until my claim is approved?

Klaus Schmidt
•Start immediately. The job search requirement kicks in right away, not after approval.

The Washington ESD system is honestly a nightmare. Be prepared for weeks of waiting and confusion. My claim took 6 weeks to get approved because they said they needed to 'verify' my employment even though I provided everything they asked for.

Liam Murphy
•That's terrifying. Did you ever find out why it took so long?
0 coins
Aisha Patel
•They never really explained it. Just kept saying 'under review' every time I called. Which was impossible to do without waiting on hold for hours.

Here's the step-by-step: 1) File initial claim at esd.wa.gov 2) Register with WorkSource WA 3) File weekly claims every week 4) Do your 3 job searches per week 5) Keep detailed records of everything. Most importantly, don't skip any weekly claims even if your initial claim isn't approved yet.

•This is super helpful. What if I made a mistake on my initial application?

•You can usually correct minor errors by calling Washington ESD or through your online account. Major changes might require additional documentation.

i filed 3 weeks ago and still havent heard anything back from them. starting to panic about bills

Liam Murphy
•Same boat here! This is really stressful when you need the money now.

Yuki Tanaka
•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. When you're worried about bills, you need to actually talk to someone to find out what's happening with your claim.

Pro tip: Screenshot everything as you go through the application process. Save confirmation numbers, print your weekly claim confirmations, keep records of all job search activities. If anything goes wrong, you'll need this documentation.

•Good advice. Should I also save emails from potential employers as proof of job searching?
0 coins
CaptainAwesome
•Absolutely. Any email confirmations from job applications, interview requests, anything showing you're actively searching.

Make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. Your weekly amount is what you get each week if approved. The maximum is the total you can receive over the entire benefit year.

Liam Murphy
•How do they calculate how much I'll get per week?
0 coins
Dmitri Volkov
•It's based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period. Washington ESD has a calculator on their website that can give you an estimate.

Just a warning - if your claim goes into 'adjudication' status, prepare for a long wait. Mine was stuck there for weeks with zero communication about what they needed from me.

Liam Murphy
•What does adjudication mean exactly?
0 coins
Amara Okafor
•Adjudication means they're reviewing something about your eligibility - could be your reason for leaving your job, work history, or other factors. It's basically on hold until they make a decision.

•This is another situation where being able to actually reach a Washington ESD agent through Claimyr really helps. They can tell you exactly what's being reviewed and what you might need to provide.

Don't forget to file your weekly claims on the same day each week if possible. I do mine every Sunday morning so I don't forget. Missing a week can cause problems.

•What happens if I accidentally miss filing a weekly claim?

•You can usually file a late claim but there might be delays in payment. Try to stay consistent with your filing schedule.

The WorkSource registration is really important. You need to create a profile and upload your resume within I think 4 weeks of filing your initial claim. They'll cut off your benefits if you don't do this.

Liam Murphy
•Is WorkSource the same as the job search requirement or is that separate?
0 coins
Gabrielle Dubois
•It's connected but separate. WorkSource registration is a one-time thing, but you still need to do your 3 weekly job searches on top of that.

Keep detailed records of your job search activities. Date, company name, position applied for, how you applied (online, in person, etc.). Washington ESD can audit your job search log at any time.

•Do networking events or informational interviews count as job search activities?

Klaus Schmidt
•Yes, those can count. Just make sure you document them properly with names, dates, and what type of activity it was.

honestly the whole system is set up to make you give up. took me calling literally hundreds of times before i got through to anyone
0 coins
Liam Murphy
•That's insane. There has to be a better way.

Yuki Tanaka
•This is exactly the problem Claimyr solves. Instead of calling hundreds of times, they handle getting you connected to an actual person.

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file an interstate claim. This can complicate things so make sure Washington ESD knows about all your work history.

•I worked in Oregon for 2 months last year. Will that affect my Washington claim?
0 coins
CaptainAwesome
•It might. You'll need to report that employment when you file. Washington ESD will coordinate with Oregon to get your wage information.

Good luck! The process is frustrating but it does work eventually. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements while you wait for approval.

Summary for OP: File initial claim ASAP, register with WorkSource, start weekly claims immediately, do 3 job searches per week, keep detailed records, and be patient but persistent. The system works but it takes time.

Liam Murphy
•Perfect summary. I'm going to start my application right now.

•And remember, if you get stuck and need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD, services like Claimyr can save you a lot of time and frustration trying to get through their busy phone lines.

Also make sure you have a backup plan for your finances while waiting. Unemployment benefits are meant to be temporary assistance, not a long-term solution.

Liam Murphy
•Definitely. I'm already looking into food banks and utility assistance programs just in case.

The most important thing is to start the process immediately. Every day you wait is money you're potentially losing. Washington ESD benefits don't typically go back before the date you file your initial claim.

•Got it. Filing today. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Just remember to answer all questions honestly on your application. If Washington ESD finds out you lied about anything, they can disqualify you and even make you pay back benefits.

Liam Murphy
•Absolutely. Better to be honest and deal with any issues upfront than to have bigger problems later.
