How do you get unemployment benefits in Washington - first time filing help needed
I just lost my job last week and have never filed for unemployment before. I keep hearing about Washington ESD but honestly have no idea where to start or what the process looks like. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after being laid off? What documents do I need? I'm pretty overwhelmed and could really use some guidance on how to get unemployment benefits started.

First thing - don't wait! You should file your initial application as soon as possible after losing your job. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employment info?

QuantumQuasar
•Just the basic info for the application. They'll verify everything with your employers directly through their system.

Make sure you understand the difference between filing your initial claim and your weekly claims. After you file the initial application, you have to file weekly claims every week to actually get paid. A lot of people miss this step!

•Oh wow, I had no idea about the weekly thing. How do I do that?

•You'll get instructions after your initial claim is processed. It's through the same esd.wa.gov website, just a different section.

Also be prepared for potential delays. Your claim might go into adjudication if there are any questions about your separation from work. This is totally normal but can add weeks to the process. If you run into issues getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get connected to agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•What kind of things cause adjudication? I'm worried my situation might be complicated.

•Things like if you quit vs. were laid off, if there were performance issues, or if you had any other income. Don't stress too much - most get resolved eventually.

•How much does that Claimyr thing cost? Seems too good to be true.

•It's not free but honestly saved me so much time and frustration when I couldn't get through on my own. Worth checking out their site for details.

One thing nobody tells you - start keeping track of your job search activities from day one. Washington has work search requirements and you need to log everything. I think it's 3 job search activities per week but double check the current requirements.

•What counts as a job search activity?

Oliver Weber
•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews. There's a list on the Washington ESD website with all the approved activities.

ugh the whole system is such a nightmare. took me forever to figure out all the steps and then my claim got stuck for like a month

Yara Elias
•That's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you eventually get it sorted out?

Natasha Romanova
•yeah eventually but only after calling like 100 times. the system is broken

To give you a clearer timeline: File your initial claim → Wait for determination (usually 1-2 weeks) → Start filing weekly claims → First payment typically comes 3-4 weeks after filing if everything goes smoothly. There's always a one-week waiting period for the first claim.

•So I won't get paid for the first week even if I qualify?
0 coins
QuantumQuasar
•Correct, there's a mandatory waiting week. But if you qualify for benefits, you'll get paid starting from week 2.

•Unless you're on standby with a return date, then it might be different

What if you were fired? Does that automatically disqualify you or can you still get benefits?

QuantumQuasar
•Depends on the reason. If it was for misconduct, you might be disqualified. If it was performance-related or layoff, you should still qualify. They'll investigate during adjudication.

Pro tip: Set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first if you don't have one. You'll need it to access your unemployment account. It's a separate step that trips up a lot of people.

Yara Elias
•Is that different from the regular esd.wa.gov login?

Javier Gomez
•Yes, SAW is the state's identity verification system. You create that first, then link it to your Washington ESD account.

I remember being so confused about the difference between regular unemployment and other programs. Make sure you're applying for regular UI benefits unless you have some special situation like being on standby or something.

•What's standby? Is that for temporary layoffs?
0 coins
Emma Wilson
•Yeah, if your employer expects to call you back within a certain timeframe. Different rules apply for standby claims.

Another heads up - if you have trouble reaching Washington ESD customer service (and you probably will), that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier can be a lifesaver. I was spending hours trying to get through and they got me connected in minutes. Really helped when my claim was stuck in adjudication.

•How does that even work? Do they just call for you?

Paolo Moretti
•They have some system that monitors the phone lines and gets you through when agents are available. Check out their demo video - explains it better than I can.

Don't forget about the tax implications! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later, but definitely keep this in mind.

Yara Elias
•Oh no, I didn't even think about taxes. How much should I have withheld?
0 coins
Isabella Oliveira
•I think the standard federal withholding is 10% but you should check with a tax professional based on your situation.

The whole process seems so complicated but honestly it's not too bad once you get started. The Washington ESD website has pretty good step-by-step instructions if you take time to read through them.

One more thing - keep copies of everything. Every form you submit, every communication, every job search activity. If there are ever issues or appeals, you'll need documentation.

•Good point. I'll start a folder right away.

•Yes! I learned this the hard way when they asked for proof of something I did months earlier and I had no record of it.

How long do benefits last? Is there a maximum number of weeks you can collect?
0 coins
QuantumQuasar
•Regular UI benefits in Washington can last up to 26 weeks, but the exact amount depends on your work history and earnings. Some people qualify for less.

•Thanks, that's helpful to know

If your claim gets denied or you disagree with something, don't give up! You have appeal rights. The process might seem intimidating but it's worth pursuing if you think there's an error.

•How long do you have to appeal?

•I believe it's 30 days from the date of the determination, but double-check that timeframe on any notices you receive.

honestly just file asap and figure it out as you go. the longer you wait the longer it takes to get money

•You're right, I'm overthinking this. Going to file tonight.

Good luck! The first time is always overwhelming but millions of people go through this process. You'll figure it out. Just be patient with the system and persistent if you run into problems.

One last suggestion - if you do end up needing to call Washington ESD and can't get through, that Claimyr service people mentioned is legit. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked when I was desperate to talk to someone about my pending claim.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into phone issues. Hopefully I won't need it!

•Trust me, you'll probably need it at some point. Their phone system is notoriously hard to get through on.
