Washington ESD unemployment benefits - how to claim step by step process?
I just got laid off from my job last week and I've never filed for unemployment before. I know I need to go through Washington ESD but I'm completely lost on where to start. Do I just go to their website? What documents do I need? How long does it take to get approved? My last day of work was January 15th and I'm worried I'm already behind on filing. Any help would be appreciated!

You need to file your initial claim as soon as possible. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. Don't wait - you can't get benefits for weeks before you file your claim.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employer info?

Nia Thompson
•Just the basic info for the initial application. Washington ESD will contact your employers directly to verify your wages. Keep pay stubs handy in case they ask for them later.

The process is pretty straightforward once you get started. After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Make sure you register with WorkSource too - it's required for job search activities. Washington ESD will send you information about this after your claim is processed.

•How long does the initial claim take to process?

Mateo Rodriguez
•Usually 2-3 weeks if there are no issues. Sometimes it goes into adjudication if they need to verify something with your employer, which can take longer.

I went through this same process last year and honestly the hardest part was getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions. Their phone lines are constantly busy and the wait times are insane. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and re-calling.

•Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They basically handle the waiting on hold part for you and connect you when an agent becomes available.

Make sure you understand the difference between your waiting week and your benefit week. Washington doesn't have a waiting week anymore but some people get confused about when their benefits actually start. Your first payable week is the week after you file your claim, assuming you're eligible.

•So if I file this week, I can get paid for next week?

Ethan Brown
•Exactly, as long as your claim gets approved and you file your weekly claim on time.

•The website definitely has room for improvement. Once you find the right section though it's not too bad to navigate.

•i guess. still think they could make it way easier for people who are already stressed about losing their job

One important thing - make sure you keep track of all your job search activities from day one. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and you need to log them in the system. Don't wait until they ask for proof because they do random audits.

•What counts as a job search contact?
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
•Applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, networking events, job fairs. There's a list on the WorkSource website with all the approved activities.

•They never told me about the 3 contacts thing when I filed. Found out the hard way during an audit and had to provide documentation going back months.

PROTIP: File your weekly claims on Sunday mornings if possible. The system is less busy then and you're less likely to run into technical issues. I learned this after getting locked out multiple times trying to file on Monday evenings.

•Good to know! What happens if you miss filing a weekly claim?

•You can file late claims but there's usually a questionnaire you have to fill out explaining why you missed the deadline. It's a hassle so better to just file on time.

Just wanted to add that if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file an interstate claim. Washington ESD will help you figure this out during the application process but it can add some complexity to your claim.

•I only worked in Washington so I should be good there.

•Perfect, that makes things much simpler for you.

The thing that caught me off guard was the tax situation. Unemployment benefits are taxable income so you can either have taxes withheld from each payment or pay them when you file your tax return. Just something to think about.

Luca Greco
•Oh wow I didn't even think about taxes. Can you change the withholding later if you want?

GalacticGladiator
•Yes, you can update your tax withholding preferences in your online account at any time.

I'm going through the same thing right now actually. Filed my claim two weeks ago and still waiting for it to be processed. The uncertainty is killing me but from what I've read online it's pretty normal for it to take a few weeks, especially if you've never filed before.

•At least I'm not the only one feeling anxious about this whole process!

•Definitely not alone. This whole unemployment thing is stressful enough without having to navigate a confusing system.

Make sure you have a good email address that you check regularly. Washington ESD sends a lot of important communications by email and you don't want to miss anything that could affect your benefits.

•Good point, I'll make sure to use my main email address.

Another thing about Claimyr - I used them when my claim went into adjudication and I couldn't get answers about why it was taking so long. Finally got through to someone who explained exactly what was happening and how long it would take. Worth it just for the peace of mind.

•How much does something like that cost? Is it expensive?

•I'd rather not get into specific pricing here but it was definitely worth it for me. You can check their website for current rates.

Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and the process has gotten a bit better each time. The online system is more stable now than it used to be. Still not perfect but at least you don't get kicked out of the system constantly like in the old days.

•That's reassuring to hear that they've made improvements.

•Yeah, they definitely learned from all the issues during the pandemic. The system can still get overwhelmed but it's much more reliable now.

dont forget to save copies of everything you submit. applications, weekly claims, correspondence, everything. if something goes wrong you'll need that documentation to sort it out

•Great advice, I'll start a folder for all unemployment-related documents.

One last thing - if you have any questions after you file your initial claim, don't hesitate to reach out for help. The sooner you address any issues, the smoother the process will go. Good luck with your claim!

I tried using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked really well. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling all day and never getting through. Definitely recommend if you need to talk to someone urgently.

•I might try that if I run into issues with my claim. The regular phone number is basically useless.

•Yeah exactly. I was spending entire days trying to get through and getting nowhere. This was much easier.

Just remember that even though you filed late (a week after your last day of work), you can't get benefits for that first week anyway. So you haven't really lost anything as long as you file soon.

Luca Greco
•Oh that's a relief! I was worried I had already messed something up.

•Nope, you're fine. Just get that initial claim filed ASAP and you'll be good to go.

The whole process seems overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes pretty automatic. Just take it one step at a time and don't stress too much about making mistakes - most things can be corrected later if needed.

Luca Greco
•That's really encouraging, thank you. I tend to overthink these kinds of things.

•I totally get that. Just remember that thousands of people file for unemployment every week - the system is designed to handle it.
