How to go on unemployment in Washington - need help starting the process
Lost my job last week and I've never filed for unemployment before. I know I need to apply through Washington ESD but honestly have no idea where to start or what I need to have ready. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after being laid off? What documents should I gather first? Really stressed about this whole process and could use some guidance from people who've been through it.

Don't wait! You should file your initial claim as soon as possible after losing your job. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or will they get that info from my employer directly?

Mason Kaczka
•They'll verify with your employer, but having your last pay stub handy can help you fill out the application more accurately.

The whole process took me about 30 minutes online. Make sure you have a good email address because Washington ESD sends everything electronically now. Also write down your claim number once you submit - you'll need it for everything.

•Good tip about the email! I'll make sure to use my main one, not my work email obviously.

One thing that really helped me was using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when I had questions during my application. The phone lines are always busy but their service helped me connect with an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That sounds useful! Did it cost a lot to use their service?

•It was worth it for me since I was getting nowhere calling on my own. Much better than spending hours on hold just to get disconnected.

•I used them too when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Really helped me understand what was happening with my case.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you apply for the right type of benefits. Regular unemployment insurance (UI) is what most people need, but there's also standby if you're temporarily laid off with a return date. Don't just assume - read the descriptions carefully.

Olivia Van-Cleve
•I was permanently laid off so I think regular UI is what I need. Is there a difference in how much you get paid?

Hannah Flores
•The weekly benefit amount is calculated the same way, but standby has different job search requirements. Since you're permanently laid off, definitely go with regular UI.

ugh this system is so confusing!! i tried to apply yesterday and it kept asking for all these employer details i don't have memorized. why can't they just make it simple?

•I know it's frustrating but they need that info to calculate your benefits and verify your work history. Take your time gathering everything first.

Pro tip: After you submit your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. Don't skip weeks even if you're not sure about something - you can't go back and claim missed weeks later.

•When do I file my first weekly claim? Right away or do I wait for something?
0 coins
William Rivera
•Wait for your claim to be processed and approved first. Washington ESD will send you instructions on when to start filing weekly claims.

•This is super important! I made the mistake of not filing for two weeks because I thought I had to wait longer.

Also be prepared that your claim might go into adjudication if there are any questions about why you lost your job. This is normal but can delay your first payment by several weeks.

Olivia Van-Cleve
•What kind of questions would cause that? I was laid off due to budget cuts, nothing I did wrong.
0 coins
Sophia Russo
•Budget cuts should be straightforward. Adjudication usually happens with firing for cause, quitting, or if there are discrepancies in the info you provide.

Make sure you start looking for work right away too. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. They can audit this anytime.

•Do I need to start job searching immediately or can I wait until my claim is approved?
0 coins
Mia Roberts
•Start immediately. The job search requirement begins with your first weekly claim, so you'll need to have activities to report.

Hannah Flores
•You can use WorkSourceWA.com to search and it automatically logs your activities for you. Makes the whole process easier.

One more thing - if you have any issues or questions during the process, don't hesitate to get help. I used Claimyr again when I needed to talk to someone about my job search requirements and it saved me a lot of confusion.

•Good to know there are options for getting help. The whole system seems pretty overwhelming.

•It really is at first, but once you get through the initial application it becomes more routine. The weekly claims are pretty quick.

Just went through this myself 2 months ago. The worst part is waiting for that first payment! But if you file everything correctly and on time, it usually goes smoothly.

Olivia Van-Cleve
•How long did it take for your first payment to come through?

The Boss
•About 3 weeks for me, but I didn't have any complications. Some people get paid faster, some take longer if there are issues.

ok so i finally got my application submitted but now it says 'pending' - is that normal or did i mess something up??
0 coins
Mason Kaczka
•Pending is totally normal! That just means they received your application and are processing it. Should change to approved or adjudication within a few days.

Remember to keep track of any part-time work or freelance income while you're collecting benefits. You have to report it on your weekly claims and they'll adjust your payment accordingly.

•What if I pick up like a one-day gig or something? Do I still need to report that?
0 coins
Evan Kalinowski
•Yes, report ALL income no matter how small. Better to be over-cautious than risk an overpayment situation later.

•This is so important! I got hit with an overpayment because I didn't report some cash work I did. Not worth the hassle.

Been on unemployment 3 times in my career and the key is just staying organized. Keep copies of everything, write down important dates, and don't procrastinate on your weekly claims.

•Any specific organizational tips? I'm not naturally the most organized person.

•I keep a simple folder with all my unemployment paperwork and set phone reminders for my weekly claim days. Also screenshot confirmation pages.

The Washington ESD website has gotten better over the years but it can still be glitchy sometimes. If something's not working, try a different browser or clear your cache before panicking.

Just want to add that if you run into any roadblocks getting answers from Washington ESD directly, services like Claimyr really do work. I was skeptical at first but when you need to talk to someone and can't get through, it's a lifesaver.

•How exactly does that work? Do they just call for you or what?

•They have a system that gets you connected with actual Washington ESD agents without the typical hold time nightmare. Check their demo video to see how it works.

Don't forget about the waiting week! Your first week of unemployment won't be paid even if you're approved. It's just how the system works in Washington.
0 coins
Olivia Van-Cleve
•Wait what? So I don't get paid for the first week at all?
0 coins
Ryan Andre
•Exactly. The first week serves as a waiting period. You still need to file the weekly claim, you just won't get paid for that specific week.

•Yeah this caught me off guard too when I first applied. Just budget for it.

Make sure your bank account info is correct when you apply! Direct deposit is way faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail.

•Can I change my payment method later if I need to?
0 coins
Daniel Washington
•Yes, you can update your banking info through your online account, but it might delay your next payment while they process the change.

Last thing - don't let anyone pressure you into turning down suitable work while you're collecting benefits. Washington ESD has specific rules about what constitutes suitable work and it's not just any random job.
0 coins
Olivia Van-Cleve
•That's good to know. What makes work 'suitable' exactly?
0 coins
Aurora Lacasse
•Generally it means work that matches your skills and pays at least 70% of your previous wage, among other factors. There are detailed guidelines on the Washington ESD website.

Anthony Young
•This saved me when someone tried to get me to take a minimum wage job way below my experience level. Know your rights!

You got this! The initial application is the hardest part. Once you get into the routine of weekly claims and job searching, it becomes much more manageable. Don't stress too much about making small mistakes - the system is pretty forgiving as long as you're honest and trying to follow the rules.
