One more thing - if you forget to file your weekly claim, you might be able to file it late but you'll need to call Washington ESD to explain why. Better to just set that reminder and not risk it.
The whole process gets easier once you've done it a few times. First couple weeks I was paranoid about every question, now it takes me like 5 minutes to complete my weekly certification.
Just to add - make sure you're honest on your applications about previous claims if they ask. Washington ESD has records of all your past claims anyway, so transparency is always the best policy.
Thanks everyone for all the info! Sounds like I was worrying about nothing. Going to go ahead and file my claim if I end up getting laid off. Good to know there's no arbitrary limit on how many times you can use unemployment benefits.
does anyone know if the child tax credit or other credits help offset the taxes owed on unemployment? trying to figure out how much i might actually owe
Final update: talked to a tax preparer and based on my income level, I'll owe about $1,200 in additional federal taxes on my unemployment benefits. Not great but manageable. Definitely going to elect tax withholding if I ever need to file for UI again.
One more Claimyr success story - used it yesterday to ask about a missing payment from two weeks ago. Turns out there was a system glitch and they reprocessed it while I was on the call. Would have taken forever to figure that out on my own.
Bottom line for anyone just starting: file your weekly claim by Sunday night, expect deposit Wednesday-Friday depending on your bank, and don't stress if the first payment takes longer. After a few weeks you'll know your bank's exact timing.

This whole thread has been super helpful! I was stressing about the benefit amount but it sounds like if you made decent money, the calculation usually works out to something reasonable.

•Same here. I was putting off filing because I was worried about the whole process.

One last thing to remember - your benefit year lasts for 52 weeks from when you first file, but you only get up to 26 weeks of actual payments (unless extended benefits kick in). So the weekly amount matters, but so does timing when you file.

•Yes, definitely don't wait. You can't get benefits for weeks before you file your claim.

•Wish someone had told me that earlier. I waited 3 weeks to file and lost out on those benefit payments.
