How will I know if I'm approved for unemployment benefits in Washington?
Filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious waiting to hear back. I keep checking my account on the Washington ESD website but it just shows my claim is being processed. How will I actually know when I'm approved or denied? Do they send an email, mail something, or do I just have to keep checking the website? This is my first time filing for unemployment and I have no idea what to expect or how long this usually takes.

You'll get a notification through multiple channels when Washington ESD makes a decision on your claim. First, you'll see the status change in your online account - it will switch from 'processing' to either 'approved' or 'denied'. You'll also receive a determination letter in the mail that explains their decision in detail. If approved, it will include your weekly benefit amount and instructions for filing weekly claims. If there are any issues with your claim, they might put it into adjudication which can take several weeks to resolve.

•Thanks! Should I be worried that it's been 10 days already? Some of my coworkers said theirs were approved much faster.

•Ten days isn't unusual, especially if there are any verification steps needed. Claims can take 2-3 weeks if they need to contact your former employer or if there are questions about your separation reason.

You'll get notification through multiple channels when Washington ESD processes your claim. First, check your eServices account regularly - that's where you'll see status updates first. If approved, your claim status will change from 'under review' to 'valid' and you'll see benefit amounts listed. They also mail a monetary determination letter that shows your weekly benefit amount and how long your benefits will last.

•Thank you! Should I be worried that it's been 10 days already? Some people online are saying theirs got approved in like 3-4 days.

•10 days is pretty normal, especially if there are any verification issues with your employer information. Some claims go through faster if everything is straightforward, but don't panic yet.

Check your account daily because sometimes the online status updates before you get the mail. When I got approved last year, I saw it online on a Tuesday but didn't get the letter until Friday. Also make sure to check for any 'to-do' items in your account that might be holding up the process.

•Good tip about checking for to-do items! I haven't seen any but I'll double check.

•Yes definitely watch for those! I had a claim delayed for weeks because I missed a tiny notification asking for additional employment verification.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me actually reach an agent. They have this system that calls for you and gets you connected when someone's available. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Interesting, I haven't heard of that service before. Did they charge you anything for it?

ShadowHunter
•They do charge a fee but honestly it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of getting busy signals all day. Much better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Hmm, seems sketchy to pay someone to make calls for you. Can't you just keep trying yourself?

Mine took 3 weeks to get approved last year and I was freaking out the whole time! The waiting is the worst part honestly. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - that's super important.

•Ok good to know I should keep filing. I was wondering about that. Did you get backpay for those weeks you filed while waiting?
0 coins
Dana Doyle
•Yes! Once approved you get paid for all the weeks you filed, even the ones during the waiting period. Just make sure you don't miss any weekly filings.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a human agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Super helpful when you need to talk to someone about your pending claim.

ugh the waiting is the WORST part! I was checking my account like 5 times a day when I first filed. try not to stress too much, most claims do get approved eventually

Check your online account daily - that's where updates appear first. The mailed letters take forever to arrive. If your claim goes into adjudication you'll see that status change online before getting any mail about it. Also make sure your contact info is current in case they need to reach you.
0 coins
Edward McBride
•What does it mean if it goes into adjudication? Is that bad?
0 coins
Khalid Howes
•Not necessarily bad - just means they need more information to make a decision. Could be about your reason for separation, work history, etc. You'll get instructions on what they need from you.

The Washington ESD system is absolutely broken. I've been waiting THREE MONTHS for my claim to be resolved and they keep giving me the runaround. Every time I call (if I can even get through) they tell me something different. Don't expect quick responses or clear communication from them.
0 coins
Ravi Sharma
•Three months?! That's terrifying. What's causing the delay in your case?
0 coins
Zara Ahmed
•They say it's in 'adjudication' because my employer disputed my claim, but no one can tell me what documentation they need or when it might be resolved. It's a nightmare.
0 coins
Freya Larsen
•Adjudication cases with employer disputes can unfortunately take much longer. Have you considered filing an appeal if the process drags on too long?

One thing to watch for - if Washington ESD needs additional information from you or your employer, that can delay the approval process. They'll send you a fact-finding questionnaire if there are any issues. Make sure to respond quickly if you get one of those.
0 coins
Edward McBride
•How would I know if they sent me one of those questionnaires?
0 coins
Darcy Moore
•It'll show up in your eServices account inbox and they'll also mail a paper copy. Check both regularly.

When you do get approved, you'll get a letter called the 'Monetary Determination' that breaks down everything - your weekly benefit amount, how much you earned in your base period, and how many weeks of benefits you can get. Keep that letter safe!
0 coins
Edward McBride
•Good to know what to look for. Does the letter come pretty quickly after online approval?
0 coins
Dana Doyle
•Usually within a few days of seeing the approval online. The online system updates first, then mail follows.

Make sure you're ready to start filing weekly claims as soon as you're approved. You have to certify every week that you're still unemployed and looking for work, even for the weeks while your initial claim was being processed. I almost missed out on benefits for my first week because I didn't realize this.
0 coins
Ravi Sharma
•Wait, so I need to file weekly claims for the time period while I was waiting for approval?
0 coins
Chloe Taylor
•Exactly! You can claim benefits retroactively for the weeks since you first filed, but you still need to go through the weekly certification process for each week.
0 coins
Omar Hassan
•This is super important! I see so many people miss out on their first few weeks of benefits because they didn't know about this requirement.

Just be patient and don't panic if it takes a while. The system is overwhelmed and they're processing thousands of claims. As long as you provided accurate information and were legitimately laid off or terminated through no fault of your own, you should be fine.

Ravi Sharma
•I was laid off due to company downsizing so hopefully that should be straightforward. Thanks for the encouragement.

Is anyone else having issues with the Washington ESD website being super slow? I can barely log in half the time to check my status.

Just went through this whole process myself. The key things that helped me stay sane: 1) Keep filing weekly claims no matter what 2) Check online account daily 3) Don't panic if it takes a few weeks 4) Make sure your job search activities are logged properly from day one
0 coins
Edward McBride
•Wait, I need to be logging job search activities already? Even while my claim is still pending?

•Yes! You need to be able and available for work from the first week you file. That includes actively searching for jobs and keeping records.

If you're really anxious about your claim status and can't get through on the phone, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Sometimes talking to an actual person can give you peace of mind about where things stand with your claim.
0 coins
Edward McBride
•I might have to try that. I called 47 times yesterday and never got through.

•Yeah that's exactly why I started using it. The regular phone system is basically useless with how busy it is.

Once you're approved, payments usually start within 2-3 business days if you've been filing weekly. They pay by direct deposit or debit card depending on what you chose when you applied.
0 coins
Edward McBride
•That's good to know. I set up direct deposit so hopefully that goes smoothly.

•Direct deposit is definitely faster than the debit card option.

Pro tip: if your claim gets approved but you haven't received payment after filing a weekly claim, there might be an issue with your payment method or address. Double-check all your contact and banking info in your account.

Check for any employer protests too. Sometimes employers challenge unemployment claims which can delay approval. You'd see that in your account if it happens.

Remember that even after approval, your first payment might take an extra week because of the waiting week requirement. So don't panic if you don't get paid immediately after approval!
0 coins
Edward McBride
•Wait there's a waiting week? Nobody told me about that!

Elliott luviBorBatman
•Yeah, the first week you file is usually an unpaid waiting week. You'll get paid starting from the second week if approved.

The whole process stressed me out so much when I first applied. But looking back, 10 days really isn't that long in Washington ESD time. Some claims take weeks especially if they need to verify employment or if there are questions about eligibility.
0 coins
Edward McBride
•That helps put it in perspective. I guess I just need to be more patient.

One more thing to keep in mind - if your claim gets denied for any reason, you have the right to appeal the decision. The denial letter will explain how to file an appeal and the deadline (usually 30 days). Don't give up if you get an initial denial, especially if you believe it was made in error.
0 coins
Ravi Sharma
•Good to know about the appeal option. Hopefully I won't need it but it's reassuring to know I have options if something goes wrong.
0 coins
Chloe Taylor
•Appeals are actually pretty common and many people win them. The initial reviewers sometimes make mistakes or don't have all the information.

also don't forget you need to be actively looking for work once you start receiving benefits. keep track of your job search activities because they can audit you
0 coins
Ravi Sharma
•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week? I've been applying but wasn't keeping detailed records.

•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep detailed records. This includes applications, interviews, networking contacts, job fairs, etc.

I had success using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier when I needed to talk to Washington ESD about my weekly claim issues. It really does work - they called me back when an agent was available instead of me having to sit on hold forever. Worth considering if you run into problems and need to actually speak with someone.
0 coins
Ravi Sharma
•I might look into that if I don't hear anything soon. The phone lines are always busy when I try to call.

•Yeah, Claimyr definitely saved me a lot of frustration. Much easier than the traditional calling nightmare.

Another heads up - make sure your contact information is current in your Washington ESD account. I know someone who missed important notices because they moved and forgot to update their address. All official communications go to the address on file.
0 coins
Ravi Sharma
•Good point! I should double-check that everything is still current from when I first filed.
0 coins

The whole system is a joke. They make you jump through hoops and then take forever to process anything. And God forbid you make a tiny mistake on your application - they'll deny you and make you start over. I've seen people wait 6+ months for benefits they were clearly entitled to.
0 coins
Sean O'Connor
•That's really discouraging to hear. I hope things go smoother for those of us just starting the process.
0 coins

•While the system definitely has flaws, most straightforward claims do get processed within a few weeks. Complex cases with disputes or missing information take longer, but that's not the norm.

For anyone still waiting, remember that no news isn't necessarily bad news. The system is designed to take time for verification purposes. Washington ESD has to confirm your employment history, wages, and reason for separation before they can approve benefits. It's frustrating but it's meant to prevent fraud.
0 coins
Ravi Sharma
•That makes sense about the verification process. I guess I need to be more patient.

One last thing - once you do get approved and start receiving benefits, don't spend it all immediately if you can help it. Unemployment benefits are taxable income and you might owe taxes on them at the end of the year unless you elect to have taxes withheld.
0 coins
Ravi Sharma
•Oh wow, I didn't realize unemployment was taxable. Thanks for the heads up!
0 coins
Freya Larsen
•Yes, you can choose to have 10% withheld for federal taxes when you set up your benefits. It's usually a good idea to avoid a big tax bill later.

Just wanted to add that if you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD for any reason after your claim is approved - whether it's about weekly claims, job search requirements, or any issues that come up - that Claimyr service really is helpful for actually getting through to speak with someone. Saved me so much time and frustration.
