Can you file for unemployment in Washington - confused about the process
I'm completely lost about filing for unemployment benefits in Washington state. My job ended last week and I have no idea where to start or if I even qualify. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? I've heard about Washington ESD but I don't know what forms I need or how long it takes. Any help would be appreciated because I'm stressed about paying rent next month.

Yes, you can definitely file for unemployment in Washington! Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. You'll need your SSN, employment history for the past 18 months, and bank info for direct deposit. The process is all online now.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just dates and employer info?

Harper Hill
•Just dates, employer names, addresses, and your gross wages. Washington ESD will verify with your employers directly.

The application itself is pretty straightforward but getting through to someone at Washington ESD when you have questions is nearly impossible. I spent weeks trying to call them about my claim status.

•Same here! The phone system is awful. I kept getting disconnected after waiting on hold for hours.

•I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD agents. They have this system that calls for you and connects you when an agent picks up. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that. Did it actually work for you?

•Yeah, got connected within 30 minutes instead of spending all day redialing. Worth it when you need to resolve claim issues.

Make sure you file ASAP because there's a waiting week. You won't get paid for your first week but you still need to file a claim for it. Then you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits.

•What happens if I miss filing a weekly claim?

Ashley Adams
•You won't get paid for that week and it could mess up your whole claim. Set a reminder to file every Sunday.

just a heads up the job search requirements are back in full force now. you need to do 3 job search activities per week and keep records. WorkSourceWA is where you document everything.

Lucas Adams
•3 activities per week? What counts as an activity?

Harper Hill
•Job applications, attending job fairs, networking events, skills training, even informational interviews. Just make sure you document everything in your WorkSourceWA account.

Be prepared for potential delays. My claim went into adjudication for 5 weeks because they needed to verify my separation reason. During that time you can't get through to anyone to check status.

Lucas Adams
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

•It's when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim - like why you left your job or if you're eligible. It's frustrating because you just wait with no updates.

•That's exactly when Claimyr was helpful for me. I needed to talk to someone about my adjudication status and couldn't get through the regular phone lines.

Don't forget you need to register with WorkSourceWA within 4 weeks of filing your claim. It's separate from the unemployment application but required to keep getting benefits.

Lucas Adams
•Is that different from documenting job searches?
0 coins
Chloe Mitchell
•Yes, registration is a one-time thing where you create your profile and upload your resume. The job search documentation is ongoing weekly.

Whatever you do, answer all the questions honestly. If you got fired or quit, be truthful about it. Washington ESD will find out anyway and lying will disqualify you completely.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts, so that should be straightforward right?

Michael Adams
•Yes, layoffs are usually the easiest to process. Just make sure you have the exact dates and reason from your employer.

the whole system is a mess honestly. took me 3 months to get my first payment because of some computer glitch. good luck getting anyone to fix it quickly

Lucas Adams
•That's terrifying. How did you survive for 3 months without income?

•credit cards and help from family. not everyone has that option though

One more tip - set up direct deposit when you apply. Paper checks take forever and sometimes get lost in the mail. The faster you can get your benefits, the better.

Lucas Adams
•Good point. How long does it usually take to get the first payment?
0 coins
Harper Hill
•If everything goes smoothly, about 2-3 weeks after you file. But that's only if there are no issues with your claim.

I filed back in September and the process was pretty smooth. The key is having all your documentation ready before you start the application. Employment dates, addresses, supervisor names, etc.

Lucas Adams
•Did you need to know exact salary amounts or just approximate?
0 coins
Noah Torres
•Approximate is fine for the application. Washington ESD gets the exact amounts from your employers directly.

Just remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them at the end of the year. I learned this the hard way.

Lucas Adams
•Oh no, I didn't think about taxes. How much do they typically withhold?
0 coins
Samantha Hall
•I think it's 10% federal if you choose withholding. Washington state doesn't have income tax so that's not a concern.

The WorkSourceWA integration is actually pretty helpful once you get used to it. You can search for jobs right in the system and it automatically logs your applications as job search activities.

Lucas Adams
•That sounds convenient. Is the job search requirement waived for anyone?
0 coins
Ryan Young
•Some people on standby status don't have to search, but most regular UI claimants need to do the 3 activities per week.

ugh why is everything so complicated. I just want to file and get my money. all these requirements and forms and weekly this and that

•I know it seems overwhelming but hopefully it gets easier once you're in the routine.

•maybe. just frustrated that i have to jump through hoops when i already lost my job

Pro tip: keep screenshots of everything. Your weekly claims, confirmation numbers, any messages from Washington ESD. If something goes wrong, you'll need proof of what you submitted.

Lucas Adams
•That's smart. I'll start doing that from day one.

Katherine Harris
•Trust me, it saves so much hassle later. I had to prove I filed a weekly claim once and the screenshot was the only evidence I had.

If you run into issues and need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, definitely consider using Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it really does work. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through their phone system.

•How much does something like that cost though?

Zoe Gonzalez
•I'd rather pay a reasonable fee than waste entire days redialing. Check their website for current pricing - claimyr.com has all the details.

Make sure you understand the difference between regular unemployment and standby unemployment. If your employer expects to bring you back within a certain timeframe, you might be eligible for standby status which has different requirements.
0 coins
Lucas Adams
•My employer said the layoff is permanent due to budget cuts, so I think I need regular unemployment.
0 coins
Joshua Wood
•Yes, that would be regular UI. Standby is usually for temporary layoffs with expected recall dates.

The waiting week is such BS. You're already stressed about losing your job and then they make you wait an extra week for benefits. At least file right away so you don't lose more time.

Lucas Adams
•I agree it seems unfair. Is there any way around the waiting week?
0 coins
Justin Evans
•Nope, everyone has to do it. Just part of the Washington ESD process unfortunately.

Good luck with your application! The system isn't perfect but it does work eventually. Just be patient and keep all your records organized. You'll get through this.
