Can I file for unemployment online with Washington ESD?
Hey everyone, I just got laid off yesterday and need to file for unemployment benefits. I'm wondering if I can file for unemployment online through Washington ESD or if I have to do it over the phone? I've been looking at their website but it's a bit confusing. I'd rather do it online if possible since I hate dealing with phone calls. Does anyone know the process?

Yes, you can absolutely file online! Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' link. You'll need to create a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't already have one. The online application is actually pretty straightforward once you get started.

•Thanks! Do I need any specific documents before I start the application?

•Yeah, have your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months ready. You'll also want your most recent pay stub and any separation paperwork from your employer.

The online system is definitely the way to go. I filed last month and it took maybe 20 minutes? Way better than trying to call Washington ESD. Their phone lines are always swamped.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved after filing online?

•Mine was approved within a week, but I had a pretty straightforward layoff situation. Some people get stuck in adjudication if there are any issues with their claim.

I had trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone when I needed to check on my claim status after filing online. Kept getting busy signals or disconnected after waiting forever. Someone on another forum recommended this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to ESD agents automatically. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling!

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Did it actually work for you?

•Yeah, got connected to an agent within 30 minutes when I'd been trying to call for days on my own. They were able to explain why my claim was taking so long to process.

•Hmm sounds too good to be true but if it works...

Just make sure you file as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's usually a one-week waiting period anyway, so don't delay. The online system at Washington ESD walks you through everything step by step.

•Good point, I definitely don't want to lose any benefits by waiting too long.

•Actually I think they got rid of the waiting week a while back? But yeah, file ASAP regardless.

•Try clearing your browser cache and cookies, then use a different browser if possible. Sometimes Chrome works better than others for the ESD site.

•ok ill try that thanks

•I had the same problem! Switched to Firefox and it worked fine. Their site doesn't play nice with all browsers apparently.

The online filing is pretty easy but make sure you answer all the questions accurately. Any mistakes can delay your claim and you might end up in adjudication hell for weeks waiting for someone to review it.

•What kind of mistakes typically cause problems?

•Things like incorrect dates of employment, wrong reason for separation, or forgetting to mention part-time work. Just double-check everything before submitting.

I remember when you HAD to file by phone or mail. The online system is so much better! Just filed my claim renewal online last week without any issues.

•Wait, claim renewal? I thought you only filed once?

•Sorry, I meant my weekly claim certification. You file once for benefits but then have to certify every week that you're still eligible. That's also done online now.

One thing to watch out for - after you file online, Washington ESD will mail you information about job search requirements. You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week to keep getting benefits. Don't ignore that part!

•What counts as a job search activity?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, career counseling, updating your resume, etc. You have to log them in WorkSourceWA. It's all explained in the packet they send you.

•Yeah the job search requirement is no joke. They actually check up on it sometimes.

Has anyone had issues with the identity verification part of filing online? They're asking for all this documentation and I'm not sure what format they want.

•You can usually upload photos of your documents directly through the online portal. Make sure they're clear and readable.

•Thanks, I was worried I'd have to mail physical copies or something.

The Washington ESD online system crashed on me right when I was submitting my application last month. I was so stressed thinking I lost everything but when I logged back in later it had saved most of my info. Still annoying though.

Pro tip: if you're filing online and get stuck on any question, there are little help icons you can click for explanations. Saved me from having to call and wait on hold.

•Good to know! I always skip reading those help sections but sounds like they're actually useful.

•Yeah especially for the employment history section where you have to list all your jobs. The help text explains exactly what info they want.

I filed online but then needed to talk to someone about my claim status and couldn't get through on the phone for days. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was a lifesaver. Got connected right away and sorted out my issue.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it to actually talk to a human instead of listening to busy signals all day. Check out their site if you're having trouble getting through.

Just wanted to add that after you file online, you should get a confirmation number. Write that down! You'll need it if you have to call Washington ESD about your claim later.

•Good tip, I'll make sure to save that when I file.

•Also screenshot the confirmation page if possible. Sometimes it's helpful to have proof you submitted on a specific date.

The whole online process is pretty painless compared to the old days. Just be patient if the site is slow - lots of people filing especially on Mondays.

•Why Mondays specifically?

Natasha Kuznetsova
•That's when most people get laid off or find out about layoffs over the weekend. Plus people put off filing until Monday.

One more thing - make sure you have a valid email address because Washington ESD sends important updates electronically now. Check your spam folder too because sometimes their emails end up there.

•Yeah I almost missed an important message about my job search requirements because it went to spam.

•Exactly! I always tell people to add Washington ESD email addresses to their contacts to avoid that.

I tried using Claimyr when I couldn't reach Washington ESD after filing my claim online. Honestly wasn't sure if it would work but it got me connected to an agent in like 20 minutes. Way better than the 3+ hours I spent trying to call on my own the day before.

•Yeah it's nice to have as a backup option when you really need to talk to someone at ESD. The video demo on their site shows exactly how it works too.

Just to wrap this up - yes you can definitely file online and it's the easiest way to do it. Have your documents ready, take your time with the questions, and save that confirmation number. Good luck OP!
