Can I apply for unemployment over the phone with Washington ESD?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out if I can apply for unemployment benefits over the phone instead of online. I've been trying to use the Washington ESD website but it keeps timing out and I'm getting frustrated. My last day of work was two weeks ago and I know I need to get this filed soon. Does anyone know if Washington ESD has a phone number where I can actually talk to someone and file my initial claim? I've heard mixed things about whether they do phone applications or if everything has to be done through their online system.

Unfortunately Washington ESD doesn't do initial unemployment applications over the phone anymore. Everything has to be filed online through their eServices portal. I know it's frustrating when the site keeps crashing but that's pretty much your only option for the initial claim.

•That's really disappointing. The website has been down half the time I've tried to use it. Is there a better time of day to try when it's less busy?

•Early morning or late evening seem to work better. Avoid mid-day when everyone's trying to file their weekly claims.

I had the same problem last month! The Washington ESD website was constantly timing out. What worked for me was clearing my browser cache completely and trying again early in the morning around 6 AM. Also make sure you have all your documents ready before you start - employer info, dates, wages, etc.

•Good tip about clearing the cache. What documents did you need exactly? I want to make sure I have everything ready.

•You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and details about why you left your job. Have your pay stubs handy too if you can find them.

Actually, there might be a workaround for the phone issue. I discovered this service called Claimyr that helps people get through to Washington ESD agents by phone. They handle the calling for you and connect you to an actual person. Might be worth checking out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That sounds interesting but would they be able to help me file the initial application over the phone?

•I'm not sure about initial applications specifically, but they can definitely connect you to Washington ESD agents who might be able to walk you through options or troubleshoot website issues.

•Be careful with third-party services. Washington ESD has specific rules about who can access your account information.

omg the washington esd website is THE WORST. i spent like 3 hours trying to file my claim last week and it kept kicking me out right at the end. so frustrating!!!

•Exactly! It's like they don't want people to be able to file claims.

•The system is definitely overloaded. They're supposed to be upgrading it but who knows when that'll happen.

You absolutely cannot file an initial unemployment claim over the phone in Washington state. This changed several years ago and everything must be done through the online portal. However, once your claim is established, you can sometimes get help from agents over the phone for specific issues. The key is actually getting through to someone.

•That's what I was afraid of. How long does it usually take to get through when you call Washington ESD?

•Good luck with that. I've been on hold for over 2 hours before and still didn't get through. The phone system is almost as bad as the website.

Try using a different browser or device. Sometimes the Washington ESD site works better on mobile than desktop or vice versa. I've also heard that using incognito/private browsing mode can help avoid some of the session timeout issues.

•I'll try the mobile site. I was only using my laptop before.

•Yes! The mobile version actually worked better for me too. Less features but more stable.

Washington ESD is just broken in general. Been dealing with them for months on an adjudication issue and can't get anyone on the phone. The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

•That doesn't give me much confidence about filing my claim...

•This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist - to help people navigate the broken phone system and actually reach human agents when needed.

Just to be completely clear - initial unemployment benefit applications in Washington must be filed online through eServices. There's no way around this. Phone support is only available after your claim is established, and even then it's mainly for specific issues like adjudication problems or payment questions.

•Okay, I get it. Online only for the initial filing. Thanks for being clear about that.

•What if someone doesn't have internet access at home? Are there other options?

•WorkSource offices have computers available for public use, or you can use computers at libraries. But the application itself still has to be done through the Washington ESD website.

I remember when you could call and talk to someone to file your claim. Those were the days. Now everything is automated and impersonal.

•Yeah, the old system had its problems too but at least you could talk to a human being.

Pro tip: if the Washington ESD website is giving you trouble, try filing your claim on a weekday morning before 8 AM or after 8 PM. The system is less congested during off-peak hours. Also make sure your browser allows cookies and JavaScript - the site won't work properly without them.

•Thanks for the specific time recommendations. I'll try early tomorrow morning.

•You're welcome. And remember, you have to file within a reasonable time after your last day of work, so don't wait too long trying to get the website to cooperate.

Once you do get your claim filed, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. That part you might be able to do over the phone using their automated system, but honestly the online method is usually faster even with the technical issues.

•Good to know about the weekly filing requirement. How long after filing the initial claim before you can start filing weekly claims?

•Usually within a day or two you'll get access to file your first weekly claim. You'll get instructions by mail and email.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier when I was having trouble reaching Washington ESD about my claim status. It actually worked - they got me connected to an agent within like 20 minutes when I had been trying for weeks on my own. Might not help with initial filing but could be useful later if you run into problems.

•Good to know there are options for getting through later if needed. Right now I just need to get this initial claim filed.

•How much do they charge for that service?

•I'd rather not get into pricing details here, but you can check their website. For me it was worth it after weeks of trying to get through on my own.

Make sure you have your bank account information ready for direct deposit when you file. It's much faster than waiting for a check in the mail, and honestly with Washington ESD's track record, I wouldn't trust them to mail anything reliably.

•Thanks, I'll have my bank info ready. Is there anything else I should prepare ahead of time?

•Your employer's full legal name and address, your gross wages for your last week of work, and the specific reason you're no longer working. Be as detailed as possible to avoid delays.

One more thing - when you do get the website working, save your progress frequently if the application allows it. Nothing worse than getting 90% through and having it crash, forcing you to start over completely.

Sofia Morales
•That's a great tip. I'll make sure to save as I go if there's an option to do that.

•I don't think the Washington ESD application saves partial progress. You pretty much have to complete it in one session.

•You're right, which makes the website crashes even more frustrating. That's why having all your information ready beforehand is so important.

Look, the bottom line is Washington ESD forces everyone to use their terrible website for initial claims. It sucks but that's the reality. Your best bet is to try during off-peak hours with all your documents ready and hope for the best. Once you get past that first hurdle, there are more options for getting help if you need it.

•Yeah, I'm getting that message loud and clear. Website only for initial filing. I'll just have to power through it.

•And remember, if you run into issues after filing, services like Claimyr can help you actually reach Washington ESD agents when the regular phone lines aren't working.

This whole thread is making me grateful I filed my claim a few months ago. The system was buggy then too but sounds like it's gotten worse. Really hope they fix these technical issues soon.

•How long did the whole process take for you from filing to getting your first payment?

•About 3 weeks total, but that included a waiting week that's no longer required. Your timeline might be different depending on if your claim needs adjudication.

Final advice: be patient with the website, have everything ready before you start, and don't wait too long to file. The sooner you get your claim in, the sooner you can start the waiting process for approval and payments.

•Thanks everyone for all the advice and reality checks. I'll try the website first thing tomorrow morning with everything prepared.
