How to apply for unemployment over the phone with Washington ESD - need help
I've been trying to apply for unemployment benefits but I'm having trouble with the online system. I keep getting error messages when I try to submit my application on the Washington ESD website. Is there a way to apply for unemployment over the phone instead? I've heard some people mention calling Washington ESD directly but I can't find a clear phone number for new applications. My last day of work was two weeks ago and I'm getting stressed about the delay in getting my claim started. Anyone know the process for applying by phone?

Yes you can definitely apply over the phone! The Washington ESD customer service line is 800-318-6022. However, be prepared for long wait times - I've been on hold for over 2 hours before. They can walk you through the entire application process and it's actually pretty straightforward once you get through.

•Thanks! Do you know what hours they're open? I've been trying during my lunch break but no luck getting through.

•They're open Monday-Friday 8am to 4pm. Definitely try calling right when they open at 8am for the best chance of getting through quickly.

I tried calling that number for 3 weeks straight and could never get through. The system would either hang up on me or I'd wait for hours just to get disconnected. It's ridiculous how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents automatically. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that before. Does it actually work for getting through to file initial claims?

•Yes! I used it specifically to apply for unemployment when the website wasn't working for me. They got me connected to an agent in about 30 minutes instead of me spending days trying to call.

Before you call, make sure you have all your information ready. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Also have your bank account info if you want direct deposit set up right away.

•Good point! Should I have pay stubs with me too or just the employment dates and employer info?

•Pay stubs aren't required for the initial application, but having them handy can help if they ask about your wages. The main thing is having accurate dates and employer contact information.

•I've tried multiple times and keep getting error messages when I submit. Maybe it's a browser issue but I've tried different browsers and devices.

•The online system definitely has issues sometimes. I had problems too and calling was actually easier once I got through to someone.

One tip - when you do get through to file your claim over the phone, the agent will ask you the same questions that are on the online application. The whole process takes about 15-20 minutes once you're connected. They'll give you a confirmation number at the end so make sure to write that down.

•That's helpful to know! Do they set up the weekly claim filing schedule during that same call?

•Yes, they'll explain when your first weekly claim will be due and how to file them going forward. Usually your first weekly claim is due the Sunday after you file your initial application.

I applied over the phone last month and it went smoothly. The agent was really helpful and made sure I understood everything about filing weekly claims and the job search requirements. Much better experience than dealing with website glitches.

•That's encouraging! Did you have to wait long to get approved after filing by phone?

•My claim was processed in about a week, same as it would be if I filed online. The method you use to apply doesn't affect processing time.

Just want to mention again that if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD, Claimyr really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much time and frustration. Worth checking out if you keep hitting dead ends with the phone calls.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to contact a government agency.

•I agree it's frustrating that we need services like this, but when you're unemployed and need to get your claim filed, sometimes it's worth it to avoid the stress of calling hundreds of times.

The phone application process is actually pretty straightforward. They'll ask about your work history, why you're unemployed, if you're able and available to work, and set up your payment method. Just be honest and thorough in your answers.

•Good luck! If you don't get through the first day, keep trying. It's worth the effort to get your claim started as soon as possible.

Been there! Took me 4 days of calling but finally got through and filed my claim. The agent was super patient and walked me through everything step by step. Don't give up!

•4 days is better than the weeks I've been struggling with the website! Thanks for the encouragement.

•Persistence definitely pays off with Washington ESD phone calls. Once you get through, the actual process is much easier than you'd expect.

Make sure you call from a phone where you can stay on hold for a long time. I made the mistake of calling from work and had to hang up when a meeting started. Lost my place in line and had to start over.

•Good point! I'll make sure to call when I have a few hours free and can stay on the line.

•This is exactly why I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Couldn't afford to sit on hold for hours when I needed to be job searching.

Another option is to keep trying the online system too. Sometimes the errors are temporary and you might get lucky and have it work between phone attempts.

•I'll try both approaches. Hopefully one will work soon so I can get this process started.

•That's smart. Having multiple approaches increases your chances of success with Washington ESD systems.

The phone agents are actually really knowledgeable about the system. When I applied they caught an error I would have made on the online form that could have delayed my claim. Sometimes the human touch is better.

•That's a great point! It'll be nice to have someone double-check everything and make sure I don't make any mistakes.
