How to apply for unemployment by phone with Washington ESD - still possible?
I've been trying to figure out if I can still apply for unemployment benefits over the phone with Washington ESD instead of doing everything online. I'm not super comfortable with computers and the website seems really complicated. Does anyone know if they still take phone applications? I lost my job two weeks ago and really need to get this process started but I'm worried about messing up the online forms.

Washington ESD stopped taking new applications by phone a few years ago. Everything has to be done through their website at esd.wa.gov now. I know it seems overwhelming but the online system walks you through each step pretty clearly.

•That's what I was afraid of. Is there anyone who can help me with the online application if I get stuck?

•Your local WorkSource office might be able to help you with computer access and guidance if you need it.

•What kind of documents did you need to upload? I want to have everything ready before I start.

You'll need to create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first, then access the unemployment application. Have your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months ready. The system will ask for employer names, dates of employment, and reason for separation for each job.

•18 months? I've only been at my last job for 8 months. Do I need to list every job I had before that too?

•Yes, Washington ESD looks at your entire work history during the base period to determine your benefit amount. List all employers during that timeframe.

I had so much trouble getting through to someone when I had questions about my application status. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Recently found out about this service called Claimyr that actually helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without all the waiting and busy signals. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Way better than trying to call on your own.

The online application isn't that bad once you get started. Just make sure you have a stable internet connection and don't try to rush through it. Save your progress as you go because the system can time out if you take too long on one page.

•How long does the whole application usually take to complete?

Ezra Beard
•Probably 30-45 minutes if you have all your information ready. Could be longer if you have a complex work history.

make sure you apply within the first week after losing your job or you might lose benefits for that waiting week

•It's been two weeks already - am I too late?

•You can still apply but your claim will start from when you file, not when you lost your job. Don't wait any longer.

the hardest part for me was remembering all my previous employers addresses and phone numbers. wish i had kept better records

•Can I look up old employer information somewhere if I don't remember all the details?

•Check your old tax documents (W-2s) or pay stubs if you still have them. You can also try searching for the company online to get current contact information.

The Washington ESD website has a checklist of everything you need before starting your application. Print it out and gather everything first - it'll make the process much smoother.

•Where on the website is that checklist? I couldn't find it when I looked earlier.

•It's under the 'Apply for Benefits' section. Look for something like 'What you need to apply' or similar.

Anyone else think it's ridiculous they don't offer phone applications anymore? Not everyone is comfortable with computers and the internet.

•totally agree. my mom had to get help from three different people just to get through the application

•I understand the frustration but the online system is actually more efficient once you learn it. Less chance for errors too.

Just a heads up - after you submit your initial application, you'll still need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. That's also online only now. Don't forget about that part or you won't receive any benefits.

Gabriel Ruiz
•How do the weekly claims work? Is it complicated?
0 coins
Aria Khan
•Much simpler than the initial application. Just answer a few questions about any work you did that week and certify that you're still able and available for work.

One more tip - make sure you answer all the questions about why you left your job accurately. If Washington ESD needs to investigate your separation, it could delay your benefits for weeks during adjudication.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing. Should be pretty straightforward, right?

Misterclamation Skyblue
•That should be fine. Just be honest about the circumstances and you shouldn't have any issues.

If you do run into problems after applying and need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much time and frustration trying to get through their phone lines.

•Good to know there's a backup option if I need help later. Thanks everyone for all the advice!

Don't stress too much about the online application. Thousands of people do it every week. Take your time, have your documents ready, and you'll get through it fine.

Gabriel Ruiz
•You're right, I'm probably overthinking it. Going to gather my paperwork tonight and apply tomorrow morning.

•Good plan! Morning applications tend to go smoother since the system isn't as busy.

remember to keep copies of everything you submit and write down your confirmation numbers

•Great point - I'll make sure to screenshot everything important.

And if you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD after you apply, seriously consider using Claimyr. I wasted so many hours trying to get through on my own before I found them. Made the whole process so much less stressful.

•How much does that service cost? Is it worth it?

•For me it was definitely worth it just for the peace of mind. Check their website for current details.

The key thing is just to get started. The longer you wait, the more benefits you're potentially missing out on. Even if the online form seems intimidating, it's really not that bad once you dive in.

•You're absolutely right. I've been putting it off too long already. Time to just do it.

Once your claim is approved, remember that you'll need to do job search activities and report them. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week for most claimants.

Gabriel Ruiz
•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?

Romeo Quest
•Job applications, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews, and several other activities. Check the WorkSourceWA website for the full list.

If you have any issues with your account or application after submitting, that Claimyr service really is a game changer for getting through to Washington ESD. Much better than the regular phone system.

Gabriel Ruiz
•I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into any problems. Hopefully the application goes smoothly though.

•I'm sure it will! But it's good to know your options just in case.

The most important thing is that you're taking action now. Two weeks isn't too long to wait, and you'll be getting benefits soon. Just stay on top of your weekly claims once everything is approved.

Gabriel Ruiz
•Will do! Planning to set a reminder on my phone for the weekly claims so I don't forget.

Clarissa Flair
•Smart thinking. Consistency with those weekly claims is key to getting your payments on time.
