How to apply for unemployment by phone with Washington ESD - still possible?

I've been trying to figure out if I can still apply for unemployment benefits over the phone with Washington ESD instead of doing everything online. I'm not super comfortable with computers and the website seems really complicated. Does anyone know if they still take phone applications? I lost my job two weeks ago and really need to get this process started but I'm worried about messing up the online forms.

Washington ESD stopped taking new applications by phone a few years ago. Everything has to be done through their website at esd.wa.gov now. I know it seems overwhelming but the online system walks you through each step pretty clearly.

That's what I was afraid of. Is there anyone who can help me with the online application if I get stuck?

0 coins

Your local WorkSource office might be able to help you with computer access and guidance if you need it.

0 coins

yeah they made everything online only. took me forever to figure out how to upload my documents correctly the first time i applied

0 coins

What kind of documents did you need to upload? I want to have everything ready before I start.

0 coins

You'll need to create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first, then access the unemployment application. Have your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months ready. The system will ask for employer names, dates of employment, and reason for separation for each job.

0 coins

18 months? I've only been at my last job for 8 months. Do I need to list every job I had before that too?

0 coins

Yes, Washington ESD looks at your entire work history during the base period to determine your benefit amount. List all employers during that timeframe.

I had so much trouble getting through to someone when I had questions about my application status. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Recently found out about this service called Claimyr that actually helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without all the waiting and busy signals. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

0 coins

It's legit - I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Way better than trying to call on your own.

0 coins

The online application isn't that bad once you get started. Just make sure you have a stable internet connection and don't try to rush through it. Save your progress as you go because the system can time out if you take too long on one page.

0 coins

How long does the whole application usually take to complete?

0 coins

Probably 30-45 minutes if you have all your information ready. Could be longer if you have a complex work history.

0 coins

make sure you apply within the first week after losing your job or you might lose benefits for that waiting week

0 coins

It's been two weeks already - am I too late?

0 coins

You can still apply but your claim will start from when you file, not when you lost your job. Don't wait any longer.

0 coins

the hardest part for me was remembering all my previous employers addresses and phone numbers. wish i had kept better records

0 coins

Can I look up old employer information somewhere if I don't remember all the details?

0 coins

Check your old tax documents (W-2s) or pay stubs if you still have them. You can also try searching for the company online to get current contact information.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a checklist of everything you need before starting your application. Print it out and gather everything first - it'll make the process much smoother.

0 coins

Where on the website is that checklist? I couldn't find it when I looked earlier.

0 coins

It's under the 'Apply for Benefits' section. Look for something like 'What you need to apply' or similar.

0 coins

Anyone else think it's ridiculous they don't offer phone applications anymore? Not everyone is comfortable with computers and the internet.

0 coins

totally agree. my mom had to get help from three different people just to get through the application

0 coins

I understand the frustration but the online system is actually more efficient once you learn it. Less chance for errors too.

0 coins

Just a heads up - after you submit your initial application, you'll still need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. That's also online only now. Don't forget about that part or you won't receive any benefits.

0 coins

How do the weekly claims work? Is it complicated?

0 coins

Much simpler than the initial application. Just answer a few questions about any work you did that week and certify that you're still able and available for work.

0 coins

One more tip - make sure you answer all the questions about why you left your job accurately. If Washington ESD needs to investigate your separation, it could delay your benefits for weeks during adjudication.

0 coins

I was laid off due to company downsizing. Should be pretty straightforward, right?

0 coins

That should be fine. Just be honest about the circumstances and you shouldn't have any issues.

0 coins

If you do run into problems after applying and need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much time and frustration trying to get through their phone lines.

0 coins

Good to know there's a backup option if I need help later. Thanks everyone for all the advice!

0 coins

Don't stress too much about the online application. Thousands of people do it every week. Take your time, have your documents ready, and you'll get through it fine.

0 coins

You're right, I'm probably overthinking it. Going to gather my paperwork tonight and apply tomorrow morning.

0 coins

Good plan! Morning applications tend to go smoother since the system isn't as busy.

0 coins

remember to keep copies of everything you submit and write down your confirmation numbers

0 coins

Great point - I'll make sure to screenshot everything important.

0 coins

And if you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD after you apply, seriously consider using Claimyr. I wasted so many hours trying to get through on my own before I found them. Made the whole process so much less stressful.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? Is it worth it?

0 coins

For me it was definitely worth it just for the peace of mind. Check their website for current details.

0 coins

The key thing is just to get started. The longer you wait, the more benefits you're potentially missing out on. Even if the online form seems intimidating, it's really not that bad once you dive in.

0 coins

You're absolutely right. I've been putting it off too long already. Time to just do it.

0 coins

Exactly! You've got this. Come back and let us know how it goes.

0 coins

i had to redo my application twice because i made mistakes the first time. slow down and double check everything before you submit

0 coins

What kind of mistakes did you make? Want to make sure I avoid the same issues.

0 coins

mostly got confused about dates and mixed up some employer information. just take your time

0 coins

Once your claim is approved, remember that you'll need to do job search activities and report them. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week for most claimants.

0 coins

What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?

0 coins

Job applications, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews, and several other activities. Check the WorkSourceWA website for the full list.

0 coins

Good luck with your application! The first step is always the hardest but you'll feel so much better once it's submitted and you know benefits are coming.

0 coins

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone. This community is really helpful!

0 coins

If you have any issues with your account or application after submitting, that Claimyr service really is a game changer for getting through to Washington ESD. Much better than the regular phone system.

0 coins

I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into any problems. Hopefully the application goes smoothly though.

0 coins

I'm sure it will! But it's good to know your options just in case.

0 coins

The most important thing is that you're taking action now. Two weeks isn't too long to wait, and you'll be getting benefits soon. Just stay on top of your weekly claims once everything is approved.

0 coins

Will do! Planning to set a reminder on my phone for the weekly claims so I don't forget.

0 coins

Smart thinking. Consistency with those weekly claims is key to getting your payments on time.
