Can I file unemployment online Washington ESD - need help with online application
I just lost my job yesterday and need to apply for unemployment benefits. Can I file unemployment online through Washington ESD? I've been looking at their website but it's confusing with all the different portals and links. Is there a direct way to start my claim online or do I have to call? Really stressed about getting this done quickly since I heard there's a waiting period.

Yes you can definitely file online! Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. You'll need to create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first if you don't have one. The online system is actually faster than calling.

•Thank you! Do I need any specific documents ready before I start the application?

•Have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months ready. Also need bank info if you want direct deposit.

•How long did it take you to complete the whole application?

The online system works well but if you run into issues or need to talk to someone about your specific situation, you might have trouble getting through on the phone. Washington ESD phone lines are constantly busy. I spent weeks trying to reach them about an adjudication issue before I found Claimyr (claimyr.com). They helped me get through to an actual agent - there's even a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Wait what is Claimyr? Is that legit or some kind of scam?

•It's a real service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents when the phones are jammed. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•I've heard of that too - my coworker used it when her claim got stuck in adjudication. She said it actually worked.

MAKE SURE you file as soon as possible! There's a one week waiting period but it starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. Don't wait around thinking about it.

•Oh no, I lost my job yesterday - am I already behind?

Diego Vargas
•No you're fine! Just get it filed this week. The waiting period is normal for everyone.

The website can be glitchy sometimes. If you get error messages just try again later or use a different browser. Chrome usually works better than others for the ESD site.

•Good to know, I'll make sure to use Chrome when I apply.

•yeah i had issues with safari, switched to chrome and it worked fine

One important thing - when you're filling out the application, be really careful about the reason you're unemployed. If you were laid off vs fired vs quit makes a big difference in whether you qualify. Make sure you select the right option.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts, so that should be straightforward right?

StarStrider
•Yes, layoffs due to lack of work are usually approved without issues. Just make sure you have your layoff notice or any paperwork from your employer.

•What if you don't have paperwork? My boss just told me verbally that I was being let go.

Does anyone know if you can save your progress partway through the application? I'm worried about losing everything if something goes wrong.

•I don't think you can save a partial application. Best to set aside time to complete it all at once when you won't be interrupted.

•yeah i learned that the hard way, had to start over twice because i got distracted

After you file online, how long does it take to hear back about whether you're approved?
0 coins
StarStrider
•Usually 1-2 weeks if there are no issues with your claim. But if it goes to adjudication it can take much longer - sometimes 4-6 weeks or more.

•What causes a claim to go to adjudication?

Diego Vargas
•Lots of things - if your employer contests it, if there are questions about why you left your job, if you had multiple jobs, etc. It's basically when they need to investigate further.

This whole system is so confusing! Why can't they just make it simple? I've been unemployed for 3 days and already stressed about money.

•i feel you, the whole thing is overwhelming when you're already dealing with losing your job

•It gets easier once you get through the initial application. The weekly claims are much simpler to file.

Make sure you keep track of all your job search activities from day one! Even though you have a waiting week, Washington ESD requires you to be actively looking for work and they can ask for proof.

Isabella Santos
•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?
0 coins
Sean Doyle
•The requirement is 3 job search activities per week. This can include applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records!

Pro tip: if you're going to need to call Washington ESD for any reason after filing, don't waste time with their regular phone number. I tried for literally hours every day for two weeks. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through to an agent in like 10 minutes. Worth every penny.

•How much does Claimyr cost? I'm already worried about money.

•I'd rather pay a reasonable fee to actually talk to someone than waste weeks trying to get through for free. Check their website for current pricing.

Just wanted to add - if you worked in multiple states recently, make sure you're filing in the right state. Washington has reciprocal agreements with some states but not others.

•I've only worked in Washington, so I should be good there.

•Perfect, then Washington ESD is definitely where you want to file.

don't forget to set up your direct deposit during the application process! getting a debit card in the mail takes longer and has fees

•Good point, I'll make sure to have my bank account info ready.

One more thing - after you file, you'll need to file weekly claims every Sunday to continue receiving benefits. Don't skip weeks even if you haven't heard about approval yet!

•So I file weekly claims even during the waiting week?
0 coins
Diego Vargas
•Yes! You still need to file weekly claims during your waiting week. The system needs to track that you're available and looking for work.

Has anyone had issues with the SecureAccess Washington login? I created an account months ago for something else but can't remember my password.

•You can reset your SAW password, but sometimes it takes a while for the reset email to come through. Check your spam folder too.

•Thanks, I'll try that. Hope it doesn't delay my application.

Quick question - if I was working part-time when I got laid off, can I still file for unemployment?
0 coins
StarStrider
•Yes, part-time workers can qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington. Your benefit amount will be based on your earnings history.

•That's a relief! I was worried I wouldn't qualify since I was only working 25 hours a week.

For anyone reading this later - the online system is definitely the way to go. I tried calling first and gave up after being on hold for 3 hours. Filed online in under an hour.

•Good to know! I'm definitely going to file online today.

Just to circle back on the Claimyr thing since people were asking - I was skeptical at first too but it really does work. When my claim got stuck in adjudication, I couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD for weeks. Claimyr got me connected to an agent who cleared up the issue in one phone call. Sometimes you need to talk to a real person and this is the only reliable way I've found to make that happen.

•I might need to try that if I run into problems. The idea of being stuck in adjudication for weeks is terrifying.

•Yeah, it's worth knowing about as a backup option. Hopefully you won't need it, but it's there if the normal channels aren't working.

Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice! I'm going to file online today. Feeling much more confident about the process now. Will definitely keep track of my job search activities and set up direct deposit. Hopefully everything goes smoothly!
