How to file my unemployment claim online - Washington ESD website issues
I lost my job last week and need to file for unemployment benefits but I'm having trouble navigating the Washington ESD website. Every time I try to start an application on secure.esd.wa.gov it either times out or gives me error messages. Has anyone successfully filed their initial claim online recently? I'm worried about missing deadlines and really need to get this process started ASAP.

The Washington ESD online system can be really glitchy, especially during peak hours. Try filing early in the morning around 6-7 AM or late at night after 10 PM when fewer people are using the system. Make sure you have all your documents ready first - your social security card, ID, and employment history for the last 18 months.

•Thanks! What specific employment info do they need? I worked for three different companies in the past year and a half.

•You'll need company names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation for each job. Also your gross wages for each employer. The system will walk you through it step by step.

•How long did the actual application take once you got the site working?

Mateo Warren
•maybe 30-45 minutes if you have all your paperwork ready. the hardest part was just getting the site to load properly

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and the online filing system is honestly a nightmare. If you keep having issues with the website, you might want to try calling them directly. I know the wait times are terrible, but I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have this video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of trying to get through on my own.

•Is that legitimate? I'm nervous about using third-party services for unemployment stuff.

Sofia Price
•Yeah it's totally legit, they just help you get connected to Washington ESD agents faster. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when I needed to resolve an issue with my weekly claims.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash obviously.

Make sure you're using the correct URL - it should be secure.esd.wa.gov/home/ for the main login. Sometimes people end up on old or fake sites. Also clear your browser cache and cookies before trying again, that fixed it for me when I was having similar issues.

•Good point about the URL, I want to make sure I'm on the right site. Is there a mobile app or do I have to use the website?

Owen Jenkins
•No official mobile app from Washington ESD, you have to use the website. It's not really mobile-friendly either so I'd recommend using a computer if possible.

ugh the washington unemployment system is SO broken. ive been trying to file my weekly claims for weeks and keep getting locked out of my account. this state needs to get its act together

Lydia Bailey
•That's a different issue though - the original poster is trying to file their initial claim, not weekly claims. But yeah the system definitely has problems.

•whatever, its all the same broken system. good luck getting any help from them

Just to clarify the process - when you file your initial claim, you'll need to create a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't already have one. That's separate from the unemployment application itself. The SAW account is used to access multiple state services, not just unemployment.

Marcus Patterson
•Oh I think I already have a SAW account from when I renewed my driver's license online. Can I use the same one?
0 coins
Lydia Bailey
•Yes, you can use your existing SAW account. That might actually make the process easier since you won't have to verify your identity again.

One thing to keep in mind is that Washington ESD requires you to file your initial claim within a certain timeframe after becoming unemployed. I think it's something like you should file within the first week, but you can backdate it a little bit. Don't wait too long though or you might lose benefits.

Marcus Patterson
•Oh no, I lost my job last Friday. Am I already too late to get benefits for last week?
0 coins
Jackson Carter
•No you should be fine! You can backdate your claim to the Sunday of the week you became unemployed. So if you lost your job Friday, your benefit week would start that Sunday.
0 coins
Lydia Bailey
•Right, and even if there's a slight delay in filing, Washington ESD is usually pretty reasonable about backdating claims as long as you file within a few weeks of job loss.

Update: I tried again this morning around 7 AM like someone suggested and the website actually worked! I was able to start my application. Thanks everyone for the tips. Now I'm stuck on the part where it asks about my 'separation reason' - I was laid off due to company downsizing, which category should I pick?
0 coins
Lydia Bailey
•That would be 'lack of work' or 'layoff' depending on how the options are worded. Since it was company downsizing and not your fault, you should qualify for benefits assuming you meet the other requirements.

Owen Jenkins
•Make sure you're honest about the reason. Washington ESD will verify with your employer anyway, so any discrepancies could cause problems later.

glad you got it working! the morning hours definitely seem to be the best time. now youll have to wait for them to process your claim which can take a while

Marcus Patterson
•How long does processing usually take? I really need the money to start coming in soon.
0 coins
Mateo Warren
•depends but usually 2-3 weeks if theres no issues. sometimes longer if they need to verify stuff with your employer

Just a heads up - after you finish your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. Don't forget about that part! Also you'll need to do job search activities and log them in WorkSourceWA.
0 coins
Marcus Patterson
•What's WorkSourceWA? Is that another website I need to deal with?
0 coins
Sofia Price
•Yeah it's worksourcewa.com - it's where you log your job search activities. You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week to stay eligible for benefits.

Wait, can someone explain the difference between filing the initial claim and weekly claims? I'm confused about what happens after I submit my application.
0 coins
Lydia Bailey
•Initial claim establishes your eligibility and benefit amount. Weekly claims are what you file every week to actually receive payment for that week. Think of it like clocking in - you have to confirm each week that you're still unemployed and looking for work.
0 coins
Alice Coleman
•Ohh that makes sense. So I file the initial claim once, then weekly claims every week until I find a job?
0 coins
Lydia Bailey
•Exactly! And you can file weekly claims online too, usually much easier than the initial claim process.

I remember when I filed my claim last year I had to do a phone interview too. Not sure if they still do that for everyone but just be prepared in case they call you.
0 coins
Marcus Patterson
•What kind of questions do they ask in the phone interview?
0 coins
Kolton Murphy
•Basic stuff about why you lost your job, whether you're able and available to work, things like that. Nothing too complicated if you're being honest about your situation.

Pro tip: save copies of everything you submit. Screen shots of confirmation pages, reference numbers, dates you filed, etc. Washington ESD's system sometimes has issues and you might need to prove you filed something on time.
0 coins
Marcus Patterson
•Good idea! I took a screenshot of my confirmation page with the reference number.
0 coins
Sofia Price
•This is so important! I had an issue where they claimed I didn't file a weekly claim and I had to use my screenshots to prove I did. Documentation saves you so much hassle.

honestly just prepare yourself for a lot of waiting and frustration. the washington unemployment system is outdated and slow. but at least you got your initial claim filed
0 coins
Marcus Patterson
•Yeah I'm already seeing that just from trying to navigate the website. Hopefully the rest of the process goes smoother.

Jackson Carter
One more thing - make sure you keep looking for work and documenting your job search activities from day one, even while your claim is processing. Washington ESD can ask for your job search log going back to when you first became unemployed.
0 coins
Marcus Patterson
•Should I be applying for jobs already even though I just lost my job a week ago?
0 coins
Jackson Carter
•Yes, the job search requirement starts immediately. You need at least 3 qualifying activities per week. Applying for jobs, networking events, job fairs, etc. all count.
0 coins
Lydia Bailey
•And log everything in WorkSourceWA right away. It's much easier to keep up with it weekly than try to recreate months of job search activity later.

If you run into more website issues or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim status, I had good luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through to anyone until I used their system.
0 coins
Marcus Patterson
•What exactly is adjudication? I keep seeing that term but don't know what it means.
0 coins
Evelyn Rivera
•It's when they review your claim to determine if you're eligible for benefits. Sometimes it takes forever, especially if there are any questions about why you lost your job.
0 coins
Sofia Price
•Yeah adjudication delays are super common. That's actually when Claimyr helped me the most - I needed to talk to someone about why my claim was taking so long and couldn't get through the regular phone lines.

just remember to file your weekly claims on time every week once your claim is approved. if you miss a week you might have to call them to fix it and good luck getting through

Marcus Patterson
•When do weekly claims need to be filed? Is there a specific day?

•you can file starting sunday for the previous week, but you have until saturday to file it. i always do mine on sunday morning so i dont forget

Sounds like you're off to a good start! The initial claim is definitely the hardest part. Once you get into the routine of weekly claims and job searching, it becomes much more manageable. Just stay on top of the requirements and you should be fine.

•Thanks everyone for all the help! This forum has been way more helpful than trying to navigate the Washington ESD website alone.

•No problem! Feel free to post if you run into any other issues with your claim. There are usually people here who have dealt with similar situations.

For what it's worth, I've found that once you get through the initial filing process, the weekly claims are pretty straightforward. The hardest part is really just getting that first claim submitted and approved.
0 coins
Marcus Patterson
•That's reassuring! I was worried the whole process would be this complicated.
0 coins
Julia Hall
•Nah, weekly claims usually take like 5 minutes once you know what you're doing. It's just the same questions every week.

Make sure you report any income you earn while on unemployment, even small amounts. Washington ESD will find out eventually and you don't want to deal with an overpayment situation.

•Good to know. I might do some freelance work while I'm looking for a full-time job.

•You can work part-time and still receive some unemployment benefits, just make sure you report it accurately on your weekly claims.
