Where do I go to file unemployment in person - Washington ESD office locations?
I've been trying to file my unemployment claim online but keep running into technical issues with the Washington ESD website. The system keeps timing out when I try to submit my application. I'm wondering if I can just go somewhere in person to file instead? Does Washington ESD have physical offices where you can walk in and file your unemployment claim face-to-face? I live in Seattle area if that helps. Really need to get this done ASAP since I lost my job last week.

Unfortunately Washington ESD doesn't really do in-person filing anymore. They moved everything online through their secure portal. You'll need to file through https://secure.esd.wa.gov/home/ - that's the only way to start a new UI claim now.

•That's the site that keeps crashing on me though. Is there really no other option?

•Try using Chrome or Firefox instead of Safari, and clear your browser cache first. Sometimes that fixes the timeout issues.

I had the same problem last month! The website was so frustrating. What worked for me was filing really early in the morning like 6am when fewer people are online.

•Good idea, I'll try that tomorrow morning. Did you have any other issues after filing?

•Yeah the adjudication took forever but that's normal. Just be patient with the process.

There used to be WorkSource offices where you could get help but even those don't do the actual filing for you anymore. They might be able to help you troubleshoot the website issues though. The Seattle WorkSource is downtown.

•That's worth a shot. Do you know their address or phone number?

•You can find all the WorkSource locations on their website. They do have computers there you can use if yours is the problem.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD for help with the technical issues, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get through to an actual ESD agent when I was stuck. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about the filing problems.

•Never heard of that service before. How does it work exactly?

•It basically helps you get through the phone queue to talk to a real person at Washington ESD. I was on hold for hours before trying it, then got connected in like 15 minutes.

•Interesting, I might look into that if I can't get the website working tomorrow.

•I understand the frustration. Do you have any family members who could help you file online? Or maybe someone at the library could assist?

Update: I tried filing again this morning at 6am like someone suggested and it worked! The site was much faster. Thanks for the tip everyone.

•Awesome! Glad that worked for you. Now the waiting game begins for your claim to get processed.

•Great news! Make sure you file your weekly claims on time once your initial claim is approved.

I work at a community center and we help people with unemployment applications all the time. While we can't file for you, we can sit with you and help you navigate the Washington ESD website. Many community centers and libraries offer this kind of assistance.

•I'm in Tacoma but most community centers in King County offer similar services. Just call and ask.

Pro tip: have all your employment info ready before you start. SSN, employer addresses, dates of employment, reason for separation. The site will time out if you take too long looking stuff up.

•Yeah I learned that the hard way. Had to start over twice because I was hunting for my W2s.

•Been there! Also make sure you know your gross wages for each employer in the last 18 months.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible. I tried calling for 3 weeks straight and never got through. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually talked to a real person the same day.

•Was it worth it? I'm getting desperate trying to reach them about my claim status.

Eloise Kendrick
•Definitely. My claim was stuck in adjudication and the agent was able to tell me exactly what documents they needed. Saved me weeks of waiting.

•How much does that Claimyr thing cost though?

Eloise Kendrick
•It's reasonable considering how much time it saves. Way better than taking unpaid time off work to sit on hold all day.

just a heads up that you need to be looking for work immediately after filing. don't wait for your claim to be approved to start your job search log.

•Good point, I already started applying places but wasn't keeping track. How detailed does the log need to be?

Freya Collins
•Pretty detailed. Company name, position, date applied, method of contact. They do audit these sometimes.

I've been an employment counselor for 15 years and the biggest mistake people make is not reading the instructions carefully on the Washington ESD website. Every question has help text that explains exactly what they're looking for.

•The help text is confusing though. Like what's the difference between 'quit' and 'discharged'?

LongPeri
•Quit means you left voluntarily, discharged means you were fired or laid off. Very important distinction for benefit eligibility.

Oscar O'Neil
•Oh that makes sense. I was laid off so that would be discharged then.

Does anyone know if you can file unemployment if you're still working part time? My hours got cut to like 10 hours a week.
0 coins
KaiEsmeralda
•Yes, you can file for partial unemployment benefits in Washington. You'll need to report your weekly earnings when you file your weekly claims.

•That's great news! I didn't know that was an option. Thank you!

the system is rigged against working people. took me 2 months to get my first payment and by then i was behind on everything. washington esd doesn't care if you starve.

•I hear you. The adjudication process is way too slow. Did you ever find out why it took so long?

•something about verifying my identity even though i sent them everything they asked for. complete joke.

For anyone still having website issues, try using an incognito/private browser window. Sometimes saved login info can mess things up.

•Good tip! Also make sure your pop-up blocker isn't preventing the forms from submitting.

I'm a librarian and we see people struggling with the Washington ESD website daily. We're not allowed to help with the actual filing but we can provide computer access and basic tech support. Most public libraries offer this service for free.

•That's really helpful! Do you find that people have specific common problems with the site?

•Usually it's browser compatibility issues or people not having all their employment documentation ready. The site is actually pretty straightforward once you know what to expect.

If you're really stuck, I've had success with Claimyr too. Got through to Washington ESD in under 20 minutes when I'd been trying to call for days. The agent walked me through exactly what I needed to fix on my application.

•Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true.

•Totally legit. They have a demo video that shows exactly how it works. Just helps you navigate the phone system more efficiently.

remember you only have a limited time to file after becoming unemployed. in washington i think its like 1 year but don't quote me on that. file as soon as possible.

KaiEsmeralda
•You can file up to one year after your separation date, but benefits can only be paid going forward from when you file, not retroactively. So definitely file ASAP.

Millie Long
•Good thing I got mine filed this week then. Thanks for the reminder about the time limit.

The whole system needs an overhaul. Why can't they just have a simple phone number where you can talk to a human being and file over the phone like the old days?

Margot Quinn
•Probably cost and efficiency. Online filing reduces errors and processing time when it works properly.

•I guess that makes sense from their perspective but it's really hard for people who aren't tech savvy.

One more tip - make sure you have a secure email address that you check regularly. All communication from Washington ESD will come through email, including important notices about your claim status.

•And check your spam folder! I almost missed an important message because it went to spam.

•Great advice, I'll make sure to whitelist the ESD email addresses.
