Can I file for unemployment in person at Washington ESD office?
I've been trying to file my unemployment claim online but the website keeps timing out on me. I'm wondering if I can just go to a Washington ESD office in person to file my claim? I live near the Tacoma office and would rather talk to someone face to face than keep struggling with the online system. Does anyone know if they still accept in-person applications or if everything has to be done online now?

Unfortunately most Washington ESD offices don't do in-person claim filing anymore. Everything is pretty much online or phone based now.

•That's what I was afraid of. The online system is so frustrating when it keeps crashing.

•Try filing early in the morning like 6am when fewer people are on the system

You can file by phone if the website isn't working. The number is 800-318-6022 but good luck getting through - I tried for 3 days straight last month.

•I tried calling but got disconnected after waiting on hold for 2 hours. So frustrating!

•Same thing happened to me. The phone system is just as bad as the website sometimes.

I had the same problem last year and found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person at Washington ESD. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much time and stress.

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit? I'm desperate at this point.

•Yeah it's real. They basically handle the calling for you so you don't have to sit on hold all day. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

•I was skeptical too but my cousin used it and got connected same day. Might be worth a shot.

The Washington ESD website works better on certain browsers. Try using Chrome or Firefox instead of Safari or Edge. Also clear your cache and cookies first.

•I'm using Chrome already but I'll try clearing my cache. Thanks for the tip.

•This worked for me! Had to use incognito mode too for some reason.

Some WorkSource offices might be able to help you access the online system but they won't file for you. They have computers you can use if yours is having problems.

•That's a good idea. There's a WorkSource near me, I'll see if they can help.

•Just make sure to bring all your employment info and ID. They'll want to verify everything.

whatever you do dont give up filing. you only have so many days after losing your job to file or you lose benefits

•How many days do I have? I lost my job 2 weeks ago.

•You should be fine at 2 weeks. Just don't wait too much longer because there's paperwork deadlines.

I filed mine at like 3am when the system was less busy. Took about 30 minutes total once I could actually get in.

•Good idea. I'll try late night or early morning when traffic is lower.

•Middle of the night definitely works better. Less people fighting for server space.

The system is supposed to be down for maintenance on Sundays from 6pm to 6am so avoid those times too.

•Thanks for the heads up. I was probably trying during maintenance without realizing it.

Make sure you have all your info ready before you start - social security card, ID, bank account info for direct deposit, and employment history for the last 18 months.

•Good point. I'll gather everything first so I don't have to stop in the middle.

•Also have your employers contact info and dates of employment ready. The system times out if you take too long.

Just keep trying the website. It took me like 6 attempts over 3 days but I finally got through. Don't give up!

One more tip - if you get halfway through and it crashes, sometimes your info is saved and you can pick up where you left off when you log back in.

•Really? That would be amazing. The system crashed on me right at the end yesterday.

•Yeah check your account dashboard. Sometimes there's a 'continue application' button if it saved your progress.

Washington ESD really needs to fix their IT problems. This has been going on for years.

Try using a different device too. Sometimes it works better on mobile than desktop or vice versa.

Whatever you do make sure you file for the week you lost your job. You can backdate but its a pain and takes longer to process.

•Good to know. I'll make sure to put the right dates when I finally get through.

I used Claimyr too when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status. Way better than trying to call myself.

Remember once you file you'll need to do weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Mark your calendar so you don't forget.

The weekly claims are way easier than the initial filing so don't worry about those too much.
