Washington ESD when filing for unemployment - system keeps crashing on me
I've been trying to file my initial unemployment claim for the past 3 days and the Washington ESD website keeps timing out or crashing right when I get to the employment history section. I'm losing my mind here because I need to get this filed ASAP since I was laid off last Friday. Has anyone else had this problem when filing for unemployment? I've tried different browsers and even my phone but same issue. Really worried about missing the deadline to file.

•Did you eventually get it to work? I'm starting to panic about the timing.

The Washington ESD system has been having major issues lately. Try filing very early in the morning (like 6-7 AM) or late at night after 10 PM when there's less traffic. Also make sure you have all your employment information ready beforehand - employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. The system times out if you take too long on any one page.

•Thanks! I'll try the early morning approach tomorrow. Do you know how long I have to file after being laid off?

•You should file as soon as possible, but there's no strict deadline. However, your benefits start from the week you file, not when you were laid off, so every day counts.

I had this exact problem and ended up using Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD who could help me complete the filing over the phone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a system that gets you connected to actual ESD agents without waiting on hold for hours. Worth every penny when you're dealing with system crashes.

•Never heard of that service. Is it legit? I'm desperate at this point.

•Totally legit. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Basically they handle all the calling and waiting for you.

Clear your browser cache and cookies completely, then try using incognito/private browsing mode. Also disable any ad blockers or browser extensions that might interfere with the site. The Washington ESD portal is notoriously finicky with certain browser configurations.

•Just tried this and got a little further! Still crashed but made it past the employment history section this time.

•Progress! Keep trying with the same browser settings. Sometimes it takes a few attempts even with the right configuration.

THE WASHINGTON ESD WEBSITE IS GARBAGE!!! I've been trying to file for a WEEK and it keeps crashing. This is people's livelihoods we're talking about and they can't even maintain a basic website. Absolutely ridiculous.

•I feel your frustration but getting angry won't fix the technical issues

•Maybe if enough people complained they'd actually fix their systems instead of forcing us to jump through hoops

•tbh the system has been terrible for years, nothing new

Another tip - if you're getting timeouts, try using a wired internet connection instead of WiFi if possible. The system seems to be very sensitive to connection stability. Also, have a backup plan ready because the system goes down for maintenance every Sunday from 2-6 AM.

•Good point about the maintenance window. I was probably trying during that time yesterday.

•Wait there's scheduled maintenance? They should put that info somewhere more obvious

Update on the Claimyr thing - I used it again last month when my weekly claim got stuck and they got me through to someone in like 20 minutes. Way better than spending my whole day trying to call the regular number. The agent was able to process my claim right over the phone.

•That's really tempting. The website crashed on me again this morning even after clearing cache.

•how much does it cost though?

•It's reasonable considering how much time and stress it saves. Check their site for current pricing.

Try using a different device entirely if you have one available. Sometimes the issue is device-specific. I couldn't get it to work on my laptop but it went through fine on my tablet.

•I'll try my work laptop when I get home. Thanks for the suggestion!

honestly the whole system is designed to discourage people from filing. makes you wonder if that's intentional

•It's more likely just outdated technology and insufficient server capacity for the user load.

Kayla Morgan
•Either way it's unacceptable for something this important

Make sure you're using the correct URL - secure.esd.wa.gov - and not some outdated link. I was using an old bookmark that kept redirecting me to a broken page.

•I've been using the right URL from Google search results. Still having issues but good to double-check.

If you keep having problems, document everything - take screenshots of error messages, note the times you're trying to file, etc. This information can be helpful if you need to contact Washington ESD about delays in your claim processing due to technical issues.

•Smart idea. I should have been doing this from the start.

•Yes, documentation is crucial for any issues with Washington ESD. They may ask for proof of when you attempted to file.

This is exactly why I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Spent two days fighting with the website and then just paid them to handle it. Agent filed everything for me in one call.

•I'm really considering it at this point. Did they need all your personal info?
0 coins
Jasmine Hancock
•They just need basic info to get you connected to Washington ESD. The actual filing is done directly with the ESD agent, not through Claimyr.

Try using Microsoft Edge if you haven't already. For some reason Washington ESD's site works better with Edge than Chrome or Firefox in my experience.

Aisha Jackson
•I haven't tried Edge actually. Will give it a shot tonight.

Also make sure your computer's date and time are set correctly. Some government sites are really picky about that.

•Everything looks correct but I'll double-check. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

Final tip - if you do get through to the employment history section, have all your employer information typed up in a separate document so you can copy and paste quickly. The longer you spend on each page, the more likely you are to get timed out.

Aisha Jackson
•Great advice! I've been typing everything from scratch each time which probably makes the timeout more likely.

UPDATE: Finally got it to work using Edge browser at 6 AM this morning! Thanks everyone for the help. The early morning timing definitely made the difference. For anyone else having this issue, try very early morning or late night and use Edge browser with cache cleared.

This thread should be pinned somewhere. So many good troubleshooting tips for the Washington ESD website issues.

I bookmarked this thread for future reference. The Washington ESD system problems seem to be ongoing so these tips will probably be useful again.

For anyone still having issues, I found that disabling VPN if you're using one also helps. The site seems to block some VPN IP addresses.

Scarlett Forster
•That's a good point I didn't think of. Government sites often have restrictions on VPN access.
