Why is filing for unemployment so difficult with Washington ESD?
I've been trying to file my initial unemployment claim for over a week now and it's been a nightmare. The Washington ESD website keeps timing out, the phone system hangs up on me after waiting an hour, and when I finally get through the forms, there's always some error message I don't understand. I thought unemployment was supposed to be there when you need it most, but the process itself is making me more stressed than losing my job did. Has anyone else found the filing process this frustrating? I'm starting to think I'm doing something fundamentally wrong.

•At least you got to the weekly claim part! I can't even get past the initial application without some kind of technical error.

•Try using Chrome instead of Safari or Edge. The Washington ESD site seems to work better with Chrome in my experience.

The system is definitely overwhelmed, but there are ways to make it easier. First, avoid peak hours (Monday mornings, Friday afternoons). File your claim early morning or late evening when server load is lighter. Also, have all your documents ready before you start - Social Security card, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including exact dates and wages.

•Thanks for the timing tip! I didn't realize there were peak hours. What employment history details do they need exactly?

Giovanni Colombo
•You'll need employer names, addresses, phone numbers, your job titles, start and end dates, and gross wages earned. Also reason for separation from each job.

•18 months seems like a lot but I guess they need to calculate your benefit amount somehow

I had the same problem last month and ended up using Claimyr to get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. It's a service that helps you skip the phone queue and connects you directly with an agent. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked - got connected within 20 minutes instead of calling for days. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ if you want to see how it works.

•Never heard of this Claimyr thing. Is it legit or some kind of scam?

•It's legitimate, you can check out claimyr.com. They basically autodial for you and wait in the queue so you don't have to. Saved me hours of frustration.

•This sounds too good to be true but I'm desperate at this point. How much does it cost?

•I'd rather pay something than waste entire days trying to get through myself. The time savings alone was worth it for my situation.

The whole system is broken on purpose to discourage people from filing. They make it so difficult hoping you'll just give up and not claim benefits you're entitled to.

•While the system has issues, I don't think it's intentionally broken. More likely just underfunded and outdated technology that can't handle the volume.

•UNDERFUNDED?? They collect millions in UI taxes from employers every year. Where does that money go if not to make the system work properly??

•probably goes to executive bonuses lol

Here's a step-by-step approach that usually works: 1) Create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first if you don't have one, 2) Log in to Washington ESD website during off-peak hours, 3) Start with 'File a New Claim' option, 4) Save your progress frequently using the 'Save and Continue Later' button, 5) Don't try to complete everything in one session if you're having technical issues.

Mei Wong
•I didn't know you could save progress! That would have saved me from starting over multiple times.

•The SAW account setup was confusing too. Why do we need a separate login system just for unemployment?
0 coins
Giovanni Colombo
•SAW is used for multiple Washington state services, not just unemployment. It's their unified login system.

I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and get denied. The questions about why I left my job are confusing. I was laid off but they're asking about quitting and being fired and I don't know which box to check.

Giovanni Colombo
•If you were laid off due to lack of work, that's different from quitting or being fired. Look for options like 'lack of work' or 'reduction in force' or just 'laid off'.

•Thank you! I was overthinking it. The terminology is just confusing when you're stressed about everything.

•I had the same confusion about the separation reason. The form makes it seem like there are only bad reasons to leave a job.

just keep trying, took me like 5 attempts but eventually got through the whole application

•5 attempts?! That's ridiculous but good to know I'm not the only one having to try multiple times.

•Same here, persistence is key with this system unfortunately

Pro tip: Clear your browser cache and cookies before starting your application. Also disable any ad blockers or browser extensions that might interfere with the Washington ESD website functionality. Sometimes these simple technical steps solve a lot of the loading and submission problems.

•Good point about ad blockers! I never thought of that affecting government websites.

•I'll try this. I do have several browser extensions running that might be causing issues.

The phone system is the worst part. I've called 200+ times over two weeks and gotten through exactly twice, both times they hung up on me after 5 minutes saying they were having 'technical difficulties
0 coins
StarStrider
•This is exactly why I ended up trying Claimyr. I was in the same situation - calling hundreds of times with no success. At least with their service someone else deals with the calling frustration.

•I might have to look into that. This is ridiculous that we need a third party service just to talk to our own state agency.

•Try calling at exactly 8:00 AM when they open. I got through on the second ring last Tuesday.

been there! what helped me was writing down all my info first - every job, every date, every address. then i could just copy it into the forms without having to remember while the site was being slow

Mei Wong
•That's smart. I kept having to look things up while filling out the form and then losing my progress when it timed out.

•I made a spreadsheet with all my employment history. Made the whole process much faster when I had to refile later.

The process is difficult because they want to verify you're actually eligible and not trying to commit fraud. It's annoying but there's a reason they ask for so much documentation and have security measures.
0 coins
Sofia Torres
•There's a difference between preventing fraud and making the system so difficult that eligible people can't access benefits they paid into.

Paolo Longo
•Fair point. The balance isn't quite right when legitimate claimants are struggling this much.

I gave up after a week of trying and just decided to look for work instead. Probably should have kept trying but the stress wasn't worth it.

Giovanni Colombo
•You should still file if you're eligible! Job searching and collecting unemployment aren't mutually exclusive. You're required to look for work while claiming benefits anyway.
0 coins
CosmicCowboy
•Really? I thought you couldn't collect unemployment if you were actively job hunting.
0 coins
Giovanni Colombo
•No, it's the opposite - you MUST be actively job hunting to remain eligible for unemployment benefits in Washington.

My cousin works for Washington ESD and she says the online system gets overwhelmed because everyone tries to file at the same time. She recommends filing late at night or very early morning when fewer people are online.

Mei Wong
•That matches what someone else said about avoiding peak hours. I'll try filing at like 6 AM tomorrow.

I spent 6 hours on my initial claim application because I kept getting kicked out and having to start over. Finally completed it at 2 AM when the site was working properly. Ridiculous that it has to be this hard.

Mei Wong
•6 hours?! That's insane. I'm glad I'm not the only one having these issues but this is clearly a systemic problem.

Here's what finally worked for me: I used a different device entirely. My laptop kept having issues but when I switched to my phone, the mobile version of the site worked much better. Still took forever but at least it didn't crash.

•Mobile worked for me too! The interface is simpler and seems more stable.

The hardest part for me was the weekly job search requirements. They want detailed information about every job you apply for and it's tedious to enter all that data every week.
0 coins
Giovanni Colombo
•You can use the WorkSourceWA website to track your job searches, which integrates with your unemployment claim. Makes the weekly reporting much easier.

NeonNebula
•I didn't know about WorkSourceWA integration! That would save so much time.

•Wait, there are weekly requirements after you file? Nobody mentioned that part to me.

I think part of the problem is that the system was designed years ago and never properly updated for the volume of users it has now. The technology just can't handle it.
0 coins
Sofia Torres
•Then they need to invest in better technology instead of making us suffer through this broken system.

•Government IT projects take forever though. By the time they upgrade it'll probably be outdated again.

Anyone else notice that the error messages don't actually tell you what's wrong? I kept getting 'Error 500' with no explanation of what I needed to fix.
0 coins
Amara Okafor
•Error 500 is usually a server error, not something you did wrong. It means their system is having problems, not your application.

•That's helpful to know! I kept thinking I was filling something out incorrectly.

My advice: be patient and persistent. The system sucks but it does eventually work. Keep copies of everything you submit and don't give up. You earned these benefits through your payroll taxes.

I had to use that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was a lifesaver. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in under 30 minutes and she helped me complete my application over the phone. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person.

Mei Wong
•I'm seriously considering this option. How did the phone appointment work exactly?

AstroAlpha
•They basically handle all the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. Much less stressful than doing it yourself.
