Is unemployment worth it in Washington - dealing with Washington ESD stress
I've been eligible for unemployment for about 6 weeks now after getting laid off from my retail job but I'm honestly wondering if it's even worth the hassle. The Washington ESD system seems impossible to navigate, I can never get through on the phone, and I'm spending hours every week just trying to figure out what they want from me. Between the job search requirements, the weekly claims that seem to glitch half the time, and now they're asking for some verification documents that I already submitted twice... I'm starting to think I should just focus 100% on finding work instead of dealing with this bureaucracy. Has anyone else felt like giving up on their unemployment claim? Is the money actually worth all this stress and time?

I totally get the frustration but please don't give up! The money adds up - even if it's not your full salary, it's something coming in while you job hunt. The Washington ESD system is definitely clunky but once you get into a routine with the weekly claims it becomes easier.

•How long did it take you to get into that routine? I feel like I'm starting over every week with some new requirement or error message.

•Probably about a month honestly. The first few weeks were rough but now I can do my weekly claim in like 10 minutes on Sunday mornings.

Yeah the stress is real but think about it this way - you paid into this system with every paycheck, so you've literally earned these benefits. Don't let Washington ESD's terrible customer service stop you from getting what you're owed.

•That's a good point about paying into it. I guess I never thought of it that way.

•Exactly! Plus unemployment gives you some breathing room to actually find a good job instead of taking the first terrible offer out of desperation.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD on the phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me literally hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Interesting, how does that work exactly? Do they just keep calling for you?

•Pretty much! You tell them what you need help with and they get you connected to the right department. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•That sounds too good to be true... what's the catch?

Don't give up yet! I know it's overwhelming but unemployment benefits in Washington are actually pretty decent compared to other states. The weekly benefit amount plus the extra time to find good employment is worth pushing through the bureaucratic nonsense.

•What's considered a decent weekly amount? I'm getting $462 which seems low for what I was making.

•That's not bad actually - Washington calculates it based on your highest earning quarter. Some people get way less depending on their work history.

I almost gave up too but I'm glad I stuck with it. Been collecting for 4 months now and it's definitely helped keep me afloat. The job search requirements aren't that bad once you figure out what they actually want.

•What exactly do they want for job search activities? The WorkSource website is confusing as hell.

Andre Laurent
•You need 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking events, career workshops, even updating your LinkedIn counts sometimes.

•Wait really? LinkedIn updates count? I've been busting my ass applying to jobs I don't even want just to hit the quota.

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP! They know if enough people get frustrated and quit claiming, they save money. That's why their phone system sucks and their website crashes constantly. Don't let them win!

•I mean... you're probably not wrong about that. The cynic in me definitely agrees.

•That's a bit conspiracy theory-ish but yeah the system could definitely be more user friendly.

I was in the same boat and almost gave up around week 5. Then I used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and finally got my adjudication issue resolved. Sometimes you just need to actually talk to a human at Washington ESD.

•How long was your adjudication stuck? Mine's been pending for 3 weeks now.

•Mine was stuck for 6 weeks! Turned out they needed one additional document that was never mentioned anywhere on their website.

Look I get it, but think practically - even if you spend 5 hours a week dealing with Washington ESD stuff and you're getting $400+ weekly, that's like $80+ per hour for your time. Most part time jobs don't pay that well.

•Huh, never thought of calculating it that way. That actually makes me feel better about the time investment.

•Plus you can job hunt at the same time, so it's not like it's 5 hours you can't use productively.

honestly if youre not desperate for the money then maybe focus on job hunting? but if you need it to pay rent and stuff then push through. i almost gave up too but now im glad i didnt

•I definitely need it for bills, you're right. Just feels like such a hassle sometimes.

The Washington ESD phone situation is the worst part. I literally called 847 times one week (yes I counted) before getting through. That's when I realized I needed a different approach and found services that help with the calling.

•847 times?! That's insane. How is that an acceptable level of customer service?

•It's not acceptable at all. That's why I started using Claimyr to handle the calling. My sanity is worth more than sitting on redial all day.

Don't give up! I've been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and while it's frustrating, it's also a safety net that lets you be pickier about jobs. Without it I would have taken the first crappy offer and been miserable.

•That's actually really good advice. I have been feeling pressure to just take anything.

•Same here. Unemployment gave me time to find something that actually matched my skills instead of just paying bills.

The verification document thing is so annoying! I had to submit my ID like 4 times before it finally went through. Just keep resubmitting and eventually it works.

•Good to know I'm not the only one dealing with that. I'll keep trying.

Here's what helped me push through - I started treating dealing with Washington ESD like a part-time job. Set aside specific hours for it each week instead of letting it stress me out randomly throughout the week.

Ethan Wilson
•That's actually brilliant. Having set times instead of it hanging over my head constantly would probably help a lot.

•I do something similar - every Monday morning I handle all my unemployment stuff for the week. Makes it feel more manageable.

Bottom line - if you qualify and you paid into the system, you deserve these benefits. Don't let Washington ESD's incompetence stop you from getting support while you find your next job.

•Thanks everyone. You've all convinced me to stick with it. I guess I just needed to hear that other people are dealing with the same frustrations.

•Absolutely! We're all in this together dealing with the same broken system. You got this!
