Is unemployment worth filing for in Washington? New to the system
I just got laid off from my retail job last week and I'm trying to figure out if filing for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD is even worth the hassle. I keep hearing mixed things about how complicated it is and how long it takes. I made about $28k last year working part-time, so I don't know if I'd even qualify for much. Has anyone here gone through the process recently? What should I expect?

Definitely file! Even if you think you won't get much, you might be surprised. The benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website can give you a rough estimate. The process has gotten better over the past couple years.

•Thanks! I'll check out that calculator. Do you know how long it usually takes to get approved?

•Usually 2-3 weeks if there are no issues, but can take longer if they need to verify employment or do adjudication.

You should absolutely file ASAP because there's a waiting week where you won't get paid anyway. The sooner you start the process, the sooner you'll start receiving benefits. Just make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates, wages, reason for separation.

•What kind of employment info do they need exactly? I have my last paystub but that's about it.

•They'll need your employer's info, your start/end dates, and your gross wages for the past 18 months. Don't worry if you don't have everything - they can verify with employers directly.

I was in a similar situation and honestly the biggest pain was just getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions. The online system is pretty straightforward but when you need to talk to an actual person it can be frustrating with busy signals and long hold times.

•That's what I was worried about. How did you eventually get through to them?

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. It's at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Made calling so much easier.

The whole system is a joke tbh. I've been waiting for 6 weeks for my claim to get approved and they keep asking for more documentation. Every time I call they tell me something different.

Giovanni Rossi
•Oh no, that sounds awful. What kind of documentation are they asking for?

•That sounds like you might be in adjudication. Have you checked your online account to see what specific documents they need?

•Yeah it says adjudication in progress but doesn't specify what they need. Super frustrating.

File for sure! I was making about the same as you and got around $280 per week. It's not a ton but it definitely helps with basic expenses while job hunting.

•That's actually more than I expected! How long were you able to collect benefits?

Amara Okafor
•You can collect for up to 26 weeks in Washington, but it depends on how much you worked in your base period.

Just remember you'll need to file your weekly claims every week and meet the job search requirements. You need to look for work and keep a log of your job search activities.

Giovanni Rossi
•What are the job search requirements exactly? Do I need to apply to a certain number of jobs per week?

Aaliyah Jackson
•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep records. WorkSource Washington has good resources for job searching too.

Whatever you do, don't wait! The longer you wait to file, the more money you're potentially leaving on the table. Even if the process seems daunting, it's worth it.

•You're right, I should just bite the bullet and file today. Thanks for the encouragement!

One more tip - make sure you're completely honest about why you were laid off. If there's any discrepancy between what you say and what your employer reports, it can delay your claim significantly.

•Good point. It was a straightforward layoff due to budget cuts, so hopefully no issues there.

•Perfect, that should be pretty straightforward then. Budget cuts are a clear-cut reason for benefits.

I filed online and it was actually pretty easy. The Washington ESD website walks you through everything step by step. Don't overthink it!

•That's reassuring to hear. I was imagining it would be much more complicated.

Since you're new to this, a few key things to remember: File your weekly claims on time (you can do it Sunday-Saturday each week), report any work or income, and respond quickly to any requests for information from Washington ESD. These are the main things that trip people up.

•Thanks for the specific tips! I'll make sure to set reminders for the weekly claims.

•Smart idea. Missing a weekly claim can mess up your whole payment schedule.

Also just to follow up on the calling thing - if you do need to reach Washington ESD for any reason, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me hours of calling.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just keep calling for you?

Miguel Hernández
•Yeah basically they handle the calling and waiting, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Much better than sitting there hitting redial all day.

One thing I wish I'd known earlier - you can usually get your first payment about 3-4 weeks after filing if everything goes smoothly. Don't panic if it takes a bit, that's normal processing time.

•Good to know! I was wondering about the timeline. At least I have a little savings to bridge the gap.

Make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. Your weekly amount is what you get each week, your maximum is the total you can receive during your benefit year.

Giovanni Rossi
•I hadn't thought about that distinction. Thanks for pointing it out!

•Yeah it's confusing at first. The benefit calculator on Washington ESD's site will show you both numbers.

honestly just do it. worst case scenario you get denied and you're in the same position you're in now. best case you get some financial help while looking for work.

•True, there's really no downside to trying. Thanks for putting it in perspective.

Last piece of advice - once you file, bookmark the SecureAccess Washington login page and check your account regularly. That's where you'll see updates about your claim status and any action items you need to complete.

•Will do! This thread has been super helpful. I feel much more confident about filing now.

Yeah definitely file. The sooner the better because you can't backdate benefits. Every week you wait is potentially money lost.

Giovanni Rossi
•That's a good point about not being able to backdate. I'll file this afternoon for sure.

Just wanted to add - if you do run into any problems or have questions during the process, don't hesitate to reach out for help. Whether it's calling Washington ESD directly or posting here, there are resources available.

One final thought - if you do end up needing to call Washington ESD for any reason and can't get through, definitely check out that Claimyr service. It's been a game changer for actually reaching agents when you need help.

Giovanni Rossi
•I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need to call but good to know there's an option if I do.

•I second this recommendation. Used Claimyr last month when I had an issue with my weekly claim and it worked great.

Update: Just finished filing my initial claim online! It was actually much easier than I expected. Thanks everyone for pushing me to just do it. Now I wait and see what happens.

•Awesome! You should get some kind of confirmation number or letter. Keep that safe along with any other documentation they send you.
