Can I file for unemployment over the phone with Washington ESD?
I've been trying to file my initial unemployment claim online but the Washington ESD website keeps crashing on me. Been at this for 3 days now and I'm getting nowhere. Every time I get halfway through the application it times out or gives me some error message. My job ended last Friday so I really need to get this filed ASAP. Is there a way to file for unemployment over the phone instead of dealing with this broken website? I called the main number but just got a recording about using online services.

You can't file your initial claim over the phone anymore. Washington ESD stopped doing phone applications a few years back. The online system at secure.esd.wa.gov is the only way to file now. Try using a different browser or clearing your cache - sometimes that helps with the timeout issues.

•Ugh that's so frustrating. I've tried Chrome, Firefox, even Safari on my phone. Same problems every time.

•Yeah the website is pretty terrible. I had to file mine at like 2am when fewer people were using it.

The online filing requirement has been in place since 2018. However, you might have better luck during off-peak hours - early morning or late evening when server load is lower. Make sure you have all your employment information ready before starting: employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. The system will time out if you take too long between pages.

•Good point about having everything ready. I was probably taking too long looking up addresses and stuff.

•This is solid advice. I learned the hard way to have everything written out before starting the application.

I had the exact same problem when I filed in November! What ended up working for me was using Claimyr to get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. They couldn't file my claim over the phone but they walked me through exactly what was causing the website issues and gave me tips for getting it submitted. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that service before. Did they actually help you get through to someone? I've called the ESD number like 50 times.

•Yeah it connects you directly to the queue instead of having to navigate all the phone menu stuff. Saved me hours of calling.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already broke from losing my job.

try filing really early in the morning like 6am or after midnight, the system works way better when less people are on it. also make sure your browsers updated

•I'll try the early morning thing tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

•This is good advice. The system gets overloaded during normal business hours.

Washington ESD's website is absolute garbage. I've been dealing with them for months and it's always something. The fact that they force you to use a broken system and don't offer phone filing is just cruel. Meanwhile people are missing rent payments waiting for benefits.

•Seriously! Other states let you file over the phone but Washington makes everything as difficult as possible.

•The online-only system was implemented to reduce processing times and errors, though I understand the frustration when technical issues occur.

•Reduce errors my foot. The system creates more problems than it solves.

Update: I tried again this morning at 6:30am and it worked! Got all the way through and submitted my claim. Thanks everyone for the early morning suggestion. Still think it's ridiculous that there's no phone option but at least I got it done.

For anyone else having this issue - try disabling browser extensions too. My ad blocker was interfering with the ESD site and causing timeouts. Once I turned it off the application went through fine.

•Good to know for next time I have to deal with their website. I'll remember that.

•Yes! Extensions can definitely mess with government websites. I always use incognito mode for ESD stuff now.

Wait so there's really no way to file over the phone at all? What if someone doesn't have internet access or computer skills? That seems like it would discriminate against older people or low-income folks.

•WorkSource offices and libraries provide computer access for people who need help filing claims. There are also community organizations that offer assistance.

Mae Bennett
•I guess that's something but still seems like a phone option would be more accessible.

•My mom had to get help at the library when she lost her job. The librarian basically filled out the whole application for her.

I remember when you could just walk into the unemployment office and file in person. Now everything has to be online and half the time it doesn't work. Progress I guess?

•Right? Used to be you could actually talk to a human being who could help you. Now it's all automated garbage.

•The online system processes claims much faster when it's working properly. In-person processing used to take weeks.

Pro tip: if you're still having issues after trying different times and browsers, try using a different device entirely. Sometimes it's not the browser but something with your computer setup. I had to use my neighbor's laptop because mine just wouldn't work with the ESD site for some reason.

•Interesting. I wonder if it's something about Windows vs Mac or different versions of things.

•Could be. Government websites are notoriously picky about technical stuff.

Has anyone tried that Claimyr thing mentioned earlier? I'm curious if it actually works or if it's just a scam. Seems too good to be true that you can actually get through to ESD.

•It's legit. I was skeptical too but it really does work. Beats spending hours on hold or getting hung up on.

•I used it last month when my claim was stuck in adjudication. Got through to someone who explained what documents I needed to submit.

•Good to know it's not a scam. Might give it a try if I run into issues with my weekly claims.

The whole system is set up to discourage people from filing. Make it as difficult as possible so people give up and don't claim benefits they're entitled to. It's all by design.
0 coins
Lena Schultz
•Exactly! They don't want to pay out benefits so they make the process as painful as possible.

•The online system was actually designed to make filing easier and faster, though technical issues can certainly be frustrating.

•Easier for who? Certainly not for the people trying to file claims.

Another thing to check - make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser. Some people have it disabled for security reasons but the ESD site won't work without it.

•Good point. Also make sure cookies are enabled for the ESD domain.

If anyone is still struggling with the website, you can also try filing from a public computer at WorkSource. They have staff there who can help troubleshoot technical issues and the computers are set up specifically for ESD applications.

Darren Brooks
•That's a great backup option. Good to know there are places with staff who can help.

Brielle Johnson
•Yes! The WorkSource staff are really knowledgeable about the filing process. Much more helpful than the phone system.

just wanted to add my experience - i tried for 3 days to file online and it kept crashing. ended up using that claimyr thing someone mentioned and got connected to an ESD person who told me exactly which browser settings to change. got it filed that same day. worth the cost just to save the frustration

•Seems like a lot of people have had success with that service. Glad you got your claim filed!

For what it's worth, once you get your initial claim filed the weekly claims are much easier to do online. The system seems more stable for those. It's just the initial application that's problematic.

Darren Brooks
•Good to know the weekly ones are easier. I was worried I'd have to deal with this every week.

One more tip - if you're still having trouble, try using your phone's browser instead of a computer. Sometimes the mobile version of the site works better. I've heard of people successfully filing their claims using their smartphone when their computer wouldn't work.

•I actually did try on my phone but it was hard to see all the fields. Maybe I should have stuck with it longer.

•Yeah it's not ideal on mobile but if it's your only option that works, it's worth the eye strain.

•I filed mine entirely on my phone last year. Took forever to type everything but it worked when my laptop wouldn't.
