Can I apply for unemployment in Washington ESD a different way besides online?

I've been trying to file my initial unemployment claim on the Washington ESD website for over a week now but keep running into technical issues. The site crashes every time I get to the work history section and I lose all my progress. I've tried different browsers and devices but same problem. Is there another way to apply for unemployment benefits besides going through the online portal? I really need to get this claim filed ASAP since I was laid off two weeks ago.

You can try calling Washington ESD directly at their customer service line. The number is on their website under contact info. Fair warning though - the wait times are usually pretty long, especially on Mondays and right after holidays.

I've been trying to call but I either get a busy signal or I'm on hold for like 2 hours before getting disconnected. So frustrating!

0 coins

Same experience here. Called 15 times last week and only got through once, then the call dropped while I was explaining my situation.

The online system is really the primary way Washington ESD wants people to file now. There used to be paper applications but they've mostly phased those out except for special circumstances. Have you tried filing during off-peak hours? Like really early morning or late evening when fewer people are using the system?

0 coins

I tried at 6 AM this morning and it was working better but still crashed when I got to the employer verification part. Maybe I'll try again tonight.

i had the same problem last month, kept crashing on me too. ended up having to file like 5 different times before it finally went through

If you absolutely can't get the online system to work, you might be able to get help at a WorkSource office. They have computers there and staff who can help you navigate the Washington ESD website. Not all locations offer this service though so call ahead first.

0 coins

That's a good idea! I didn't think about going to a WorkSource location. Do you know if they can actually file the claim for me or do I still have to do it myself?

0 coins

From what I understand, they can guide you through the process but you still have to be the one entering your information. It's more like tech support than them doing it for you.

I had similar issues getting through to Washington ESD by phone until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get connected to an actual agent without all the waiting and getting hung up on. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth trying if you need to talk to someone about filing your claim.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. How much does it cost? Seems weird to pay someone to make a phone call for you.

0 coins

I was skeptical too but honestly it saved me so much time and frustration. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

0 coins

Interesting, I'll check out that video. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get this claim filed.

The Washington ESD system is such garbage. I swear they make it crash on purpose to discourage people from filing. It's like they don't want to pay out benefits.

0 coins

I don't think it's intentional, just old technology that can't handle the volume. The system was built years ago and wasn't designed for this many users.

0 coins

Maybe, but you'd think they'd have upgraded it by now especially after all the issues during the pandemic. It's 2025 for crying out loud.

Make sure you're clearing your browser cache and cookies before trying again. Sometimes the Washington ESD site gets stuck with old session data and that causes problems. Also try using Chrome in incognito mode.

0 coins

I did try incognito mode but not clearing cache and cookies. I'll give that a shot, thanks for the tip!

whatever you do dont wait too long to file. theres a time limit on when you can backdate your claim and if you miss it you could lose weeks of benefits

0 coins

Oh no, how long do I have? I was laid off on January 15th and it's now the 29th. Am I cutting it close?

0 coins

You should be fine. In Washington you generally have a year from when you became unemployed to file your initial claim, but you want to file as soon as possible to avoid any delays in getting benefits.

0 coins

Try filing from a different location with different internet. Sometimes it's an ISP issue or your local connection having problems with their servers. I had to go to the library to finally get mine to work.

0 coins

That's actually not a bad idea. There's a library right near me that has good wifi. Might be worth a shot.

Another option is to start the application but save your progress frequently. The Washington ESD site has a 'save and continue later' feature. That way if it crashes you don't lose everything.

0 coins

I tried using that feature but it seems like it doesn't always save properly. Sometimes when I come back my information is gone anyway.

0 coins

Yeah the save feature is buggy too unfortunately. Best bet is still trying during off-peak hours when the system is less overloaded.

This is exactly why I used Claimyr when I needed to get my adjudication issue resolved last month. Couldn't get through on the phone for weeks but they got me connected to an agent the same day. Super helpful for these kinds of Washington ESD problems.

0 coins

Ok I keep seeing people mention this Claimyr thing. Is this like a legit service or what? How do I know it's not a scam?

0 coins

It's legitimate. They don't ask for your personal info or anything sketchy. Just helps you get through to Washington ESD when you need to talk to someone.

Have you tried using a VPN? Sometimes changing your apparent location can help with website issues. Also make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser settings.

0 coins

I haven't tried a VPN but I'll look into that. JavaScript should be enabled but I'll double check. Thanks!

just keep trying the website honestly. i know its annoying but eventually it will work. took me like 10 tries over 3 days but i finally got through

0 coins

Yeah I guess persistence is key. Just frustrating when you need to file quickly and the system keeps failing.

0 coins

Make sure you have all your documents ready before you start - W2s, pay stubs, employer contact info, etc. The site will time out if you take too long looking for information while you're in the middle of the application.

0 coins

Good point. I have been scrambling to find some of that info while I'm in the middle of filling it out. I'll get everything organized first next time.

0 coins

You could also try contacting your local state representative's office. They sometimes have staff who can help with Washington ESD issues or at least point you in the right direction for getting help.

0 coins

I never thought about that. Do they actually help with individual cases like this?

0 coins

Some do, especially if you're having trouble accessing services you're entitled to. Worth a phone call at least.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't give up. I know it's frustrating but you need to get that claim filed. Your benefits are backdated to when you first became eligible so you won't lose money, but you still need to get the initial application in.

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm definitely not giving up, just trying to find the path of least resistance to get this done.

0 coins

Update on the Claimyr thing - I just used them again yesterday to check on my claim status since the website wasn't showing updated info. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. Really worth it when you just need to talk to someone quickly.

0 coins

That's good to know. I'm going to try the website one more time tonight and if it doesn't work I might give them a try.

0 coins

I'm curious about this too. Might be helpful for when I need to call about my weekly claims.

0 coins

The system usually works better on weekends when fewer people are using it. Try Saturday or Sunday if you can wait that long.

0 coins

Good tip! I'll definitely try this weekend if I can't get it working tonight.

0 coins

UPDATE: I finally got it to work! Took everyone's advice - cleared my cache, tried at 11 PM, had all my documents ready, and saved frequently. The application went through without any crashes. Thanks everyone for all the helpful suggestions!

0 coins

Awesome! Glad you were able to get it filed. Now you just have to wait for them to process it.

0 coins

nice! told you persistence would pay off eventually

0 coins

Congratulations! Make sure you file your weekly claims on time once your claim is approved. And keep track of your job search activities for the work search requirements.

0 coins

Great to hear you got it working! For anyone else having similar issues, all these tips are solid. The Washington ESD system definitely has its quirks but it's usually just a matter of trying at the right time with the right setup.

0 coins

Yeah this thread was really helpful. Bookmarking it in case I run into problems with my claim later.

0 coins

This whole thread is a perfect example of why Washington ESD needs to invest in better technology. Shouldn't be this hard to file for benefits you're entitled to.

0 coins

Completely agree. The system works but it's definitely not user-friendly. Hopefully they'll upgrade it soon.

0 coins

Don't hold your breath. Government technology upgrades move at a snail's pace.
