Why can't I file my unemployment claim with Washington ESD - keeps getting rejected

I've been trying to file my initial unemployment claim for the past 4 days and it keeps getting rejected or won't let me complete it. Every time I get to the employment history section, the system either crashes or tells me there's an error. I lost my job 2 weeks ago and I'm starting to panic about paying rent. Has anyone else had trouble actually filing their claim with Washington ESD? I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

Are you using the correct website? Make sure you're on secure.esd.wa.gov and not some other site. Also try clearing your browser cache and using Chrome or Firefox instead of Safari.

Yeah I'm on the right site. I tried different browsers but still getting the same error when I enter my work history.

this happened to me too, the site is garbage especially during busy times

The employment history section is tricky. You need exact dates and addresses for all employers in the last 18 months. If you're missing any required information or the dates don't match their records, it will reject your application. Double-check that your employer names match exactly what's on your paystubs.

I think this might be it. My company got bought out last year so the name changed. Should I use the old name or new name?

0 coins

Use whatever name appears on your most recent paystub and W-2. If the buyout happened mid-year, you might need to list both companies as separate employers.

I had the same problem last month and couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD for help. The phone lines are always busy and they never called me back. I ended up using this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

How much does that cost? I'm already broke and can't afford to pay for something that should be free.

It's worth it to actually talk to someone who can walk you through the filing process. Way better than being stuck for weeks trying to figure it out yourself.

Never heard of this but might be worth trying if the regular system isn't working

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! I've been trying to file for 3 weeks and keep getting different error messages. This is supposed to be our safety net but they make it impossible to actually get help when you need it most.

I get your frustration but yelling in caps doesn't help solve the technical issue. The system does have problems but there are usually workarounds.

honestly though they're right, the system sucks

For the original poster - try filing during off-peak hours like early morning (6-8 AM) or late evening after 10 PM. The system crashes less when fewer people are using it. Also make sure you have all your documents ready before you start: Social Security card, ID, all employer information including addresses and phone numbers.

Good idea about the timing. I was trying during lunch breaks which is probably when everyone else is too.

This worked for me! Filed at 6 AM and went right through with no problems.

also make sure ur using the right social security number lol i know that sounds dumb but i was accidentally putting in my old apartment number instead of my SSN and couldn't figure out why it kept rejecting me

Ha! I double-checked and I'm definitely using the right SSN. But thanks for the reminder to verify all the basic info.

We've all done something like that before, don't worry about it!

One more thing to check - if you've ever filed for unemployment in Washington before, even years ago, you might need to reopen an existing claim instead of filing a new one. The system will reject new applications if it finds an old claim on file.

I did file back in 2019 but that claim ended a long time ago. How do I know if I need to reopen vs file new?

Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and check if there's an old claim showing. If there is, you'll see an option to reopen instead of file new.

This is probably the answer! Old claims mess up the system all the time.

I tried for 2 weeks to file online and finally drove to the WorkSource office. They helped me file in person which took about 30 minutes. Sometimes the old-fashioned way is better than fighting with the website.

I didn't know you could still file in person! Is there an appointment needed or can you just walk in?

I just walked in but had to wait about an hour. Bring all your paperwork and ID. They were really helpful though.

Same thing happened to my brother last month. Turns out he had a typo in his employer's federal tax ID number. The system cross-checks everything and if one piece doesn't match their database, it rejects the whole application.

Where do I find my employer's federal tax ID? I don't think I have that information.

It should be on your W-2 form or paystub. If you don't have it, you can usually find it on your company's website or call HR.

0 coins

Actually, you don't always need the federal tax ID for the initial application. The employer name and address are usually sufficient.

Another option is to call the claims center directly at 800-318-6022, but good luck getting through. I tried calling 47 times last week and only got through once. That's when someone told me about Claimyr - they can actually get you connected to a live person instead of spending hours redialing.

47 times?! That's insane. I tried calling a few times but gave up after getting busy signals.

The phone system is definitely the worst part of dealing with Washington ESD. At least the online filing works sometimes.

Make sure you're not trying to file too early. You can't file for unemployment until after your last day of work, and some people try to file while they're still technically employed during a notice period.

My last day was 2 weeks ago so that's not the issue, but good point for others who might be reading this.

Update us when you figure it out! I'm bookmarking this thread in case I ever need to file.

Will do! I'm going to try the early morning filing and double-check my employment dates. If that doesn't work I might try that Claimyr thing or go to WorkSource in person.

Hope you get it sorted out soon. The waiting is the worst part when you need the money.

I work in HR and see this all the time. Employees often don't realize their official start/end dates might be different from what they think. Check your hiring paperwork or ask your former employer for the exact dates they have on file.

Oliver Weber

•

That's a really good point. I might have the wrong start date since I had a probationary period before becoming a regular employee.

0 coins

Exactly! The probation period usually doesn't count as your official start date for unemployment purposes.

This explains why my application got rejected the first time. Had to call my old job to get the right dates.

Try using a different device too. Sometimes the website works better on a phone vs computer or vice versa. The mobile version is actually pretty good now.

•

I'll try that! I was only using my laptop so maybe my phone will work better.

If all else fails, contact your state representative's office. They have people who can help navigate Washington ESD issues and sometimes get faster responses than regular claimants.

I had no idea state reps could help with this stuff. That's really good to know as a last resort.

Yeah they have constituent services for exactly these kinds of bureaucratic problems.
