How to file unemployment by phone with Washington ESD - need help
I'm trying to figure out how to file my unemployment claim by phone instead of online. The Washington ESD website keeps timing out on me and I've been trying for days. Does anyone know if you can still call to file your initial claim? I work construction and got laid off last week due to lack of projects. Really need to get this started but the online system isn't working for me at all.

You can call the Washington ESD customer service line but be prepared for long wait times. The number is 800-318-6022. They handle initial claims over the phone but it usually takes 1-2 hours to get through to someone.

•Thanks! Do I need any specific documents ready when I call?

•Yes - have your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months. Also any separation paperwork from your employer.

•Same here. Spent 4 hours yesterday and never got through. Really frustrating when you need help.

•I found Claimyr recently - it's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me tons of time.

•never heard of that before. does it actually work or is it just another scam?

The phone filing process is pretty straightforward once you get through. They'll ask for your personal info, work history, and reason for separation. Make sure you know your last day of work and gross wages from your final paycheck.

•How long does the call usually take once you're connected?

•About 20-30 minutes for a standard claim. Construction workers sometimes need extra time if you worked for multiple contractors.

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO JUST TALK TO SOMEONE?? Been unemployed for 2 weeks and still cant even file my claim. This is insane.

•I feel your pain. The phone system gets overwhelmed easily. Try calling right at 8am when they open.

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. It handles the calling and waiting for you so you don't have to sit by the phone all day.

Pro tip: Have all your employer information written down including company names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason you left each job. This speeds up the process significantly.

•Good advice. I forgot to have my previous employer's address and had to call back.

•Should I include part-time jobs too or just my main construction job?

•Include all employment from the last 18 months, even part-time or temporary work.

Does anyone know if they process phone claims faster than online ones? I'm worried about delays.

Lauren Wood
•Processing time is the same regardless of how you file. It's all the same system on their end.

•That's good to know, thanks.

Make sure you call on a weekday if possible. I've heard weekend and Monday morning wait times are even worse.

•Good point. I was planning to call Monday but maybe Tuesday would be better.

•Tuesday through Thursday are usually the best days to call from what I've experienced.

Just a heads up - they might ask about your availability for work and job search activities even during the initial filing call. Be ready to confirm you're able and available.

Wesley Hallow
•What exactly do they mean by able and available? I can work but there just aren't any construction jobs right now.

Paige Cantoni
•Able means you're physically capable of working and available means you're ready to accept suitable work if offered. Since you're just temporarily laid off, you should be fine.

One thing to remember - if you get disconnected during the call you'll probably have to start over completely. Make sure you're in a good signal area.

•Oh no, that would be terrible after waiting so long. I'll make sure to use my landline.

•Smart thinking. Cell service can be spotty and you don't want to lose your place in line.

For anyone still struggling with the phone system, I really recommend checking out Claimyr. It's designed specifically for these Washington ESD calling issues and has worked great for several people I know.

•Is there a cost for using it? Seems too good to be true.

•There is a fee but honestly it was worth not spending days trying to get through. The demo video explains everything.

they told me on the phone that i need to keep filing weekly claims even if my initial claim is still processing. just fyi for anyone else going through this
0 coins
Wesley Hallow
•That's confusing. How do you file weekly claims if your initial claim isn't approved yet?
0 coins
Kylo Ren
•you can still file them online or by phone. they just won't pay out until the initial claim is processed.

The phone representatives are actually pretty helpful once you get through. They can explain things better than the website and answer specific questions about your situation.

•That's encouraging. I've been so stressed about messing something up with the online application.

•Don't worry too much. They deal with construction layoffs all the time and know the common issues.

Has anyone had luck with the 'call back' option on the phone system? It says they'll call you back but I'm not sure if it actually works.

•I tried it once and never got a call back. Ended up just waiting on hold.

Justin Chang
•The callback system is pretty unreliable from what I've heard. Better to just wait on hold if you have the time.

FINALLY got through after using that claimyr service someone mentioned. Filed my claim and should get my first payment next week. Thanks everyone for the help!

just remember you have to report any work you do while on unemployment even if its just a day or two. they ask about this during the phone filing

Wesley Hallow
•Good point. What if I pick up a small side job while waiting for construction work to pick back up?

•report all earnings even if its just $50. better to be honest than get hit with an overpayment later.

One last tip - make sure you have a quiet place to take the call. The representatives need to verify a lot of information and background noise can make it difficult.

•Thanks for all the advice everyone. I feel much more prepared now to file my claim.

•Good luck! The construction industry has its ups and downs but unemployment benefits help bridge the gaps.
