How do I sign up for unemployment online with Washington ESD?

I just got laid off from my job at a retail store and need to apply for unemployment benefits. I've heard I can do this online but I'm not sure where to start or what information I'll need. Can someone walk me through the Washington ESD online application process? I've never filed for unemployment before and want to make sure I do it right.

You'll need to go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' link. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months ready. The system will ask for your employer information, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

Thanks! Do I need to know my exact wages or just approximate amounts?

0 coins

Exact wages are better if you have them, but Washington ESD can verify with your employers. Just be as accurate as possible.

The online application is pretty straightforward but make sure you complete it all in one sitting. I think it times out after a certain period of inactivity. Also, you'll need to create a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't already have one.

0 coins

What's a SAW account? Is that different from the Washington ESD account?

0 coins

SAW is the state's login system. You use it to access your Washington ESD account and other state services. You'll create it during the application process.

I just went through this process last month and it was actually easier than I expected. One thing to note - you can apply online but if you run into any issues or need to speak with someone, good luck getting through on the phone. The hold times are insane. I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents automatically. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? Seems like something that should be free.

0 coins

I thought the same thing initially, but when you're waiting hours on hold and getting disconnected, it's worth it. Plus they don't ask for personal info which I appreciated.

0 coins

I'll keep that in mind in case I need help later. Hopefully the online application goes smoothly.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's a waiting week but you want to get your claim started right away. The longer you wait, the more you might lose in benefits.

0 coins

What do you mean by waiting week? Do I not get paid for the first week?

0 coins

Washington has a one-week waiting period for the first week of your claim. You file for it but don't get paid for that week unless you're on standby status.

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing. took me like 3 tries to figure out where to even start the application. why cant they make it more obvious?

0 coins

I agree the website could be more user-friendly. Look for the big green button that says 'Apply for Benefits' on the main page.

0 coins

thanks found it eventually. now im stuck on the employer info section

0 coins

Just a heads up - the system asks for a lot of information about your employment history. I had to dig up old pay stubs and tax forms. Also, if you worked for multiple employers in the last 18 months, you'll need info for all of them.

0 coins

I only worked at one place for the past two years, so hopefully that makes it easier.

0 coins

That should definitely simplify things. Make sure you have their exact business name and address.

0 coins

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource WA as part of your job search requirements. They'll tell you about this during the application process but it's good to know ahead of time.

0 coins

Is that something I have to do right away or can I wait until after I submit my application?

0 coins

You have to register within a certain timeframe after filing. I think it's like 2-3 weeks but don't quote me on that.

0 coins

It's actually within 5 business days of filing your initial claim unless you're exempt from job search requirements.

0 coins

I remember being confused about whether I was eligible or not. The online system has a pre-screening tool that can give you an idea if you qualify before you spend time on the full application.

0 coins

That's helpful! I assume I qualify since I was laid off through no fault of my own, but good to double-check.

0 coins

Make sure you save your confirmation number after you submit! You'll need it to track your application status and for any follow-up communications with Washington ESD.

0 coins

Good point, I'll screenshot it just to be safe.

0 coins

Also take a screenshot of the whole confirmation page. Sometimes they include important next steps there.

The WORST part of this whole process is if your claim goes into adjudication. That's when they need to verify something about your employment or separation. Can take weeks to resolve and you're stuck waiting with no income.

0 coins

Is there anything I can do to avoid that happening?

0 coins

Just be completely honest and accurate on your application. Most adjudication issues happen when there are discrepancies or missing information.

0 coins

If you do end up in adjudication, that's another situation where Claimyr can help. They can get you through to someone who can explain what's happening with your claim.

0 coins

I filed online about 6 months ago and it was pretty straightforward. The hardest part was gathering all the employment information they wanted. Make sure you have your most recent employer's business license number if possible.

0 coins

Where would I find their business license number? I don't think I've ever seen that on my pay stubs.

0 coins

You might not have it and that's okay. Washington ESD can look it up. It just speeds up the process if you have it.

0 coins

One thing I wish I'd known - after you submit your application, you still need to file weekly claims to actually receive benefits. The initial application just establishes your claim.

0 coins

How often do I need to file these weekly claims?

0 coins

Every week, usually by Sunday. You'll log into your account and answer questions about your job search activities and any work you did that week.

0 coins

And don't forget to report any income you earn, even if it's just a few hours of part-time work!

the washington esd system crashed on me twice while i was trying to apply. super frustrating. ended up having to start over from scratch the third time but it finally went through

0 coins

Oh no, that sounds terrible! Did you lose all your information or does it save as you go?

0 coins

it doesnt save anything so you have to start completely over. i recommend doing it when the system is less busy like early morning

0 coins

I had to call Washington ESD after I submitted my application because I made a mistake on one of the dates. Took me 4 hours to get through to someone. Next time I'll definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier.

0 coins

Were you able to fix the mistake or did it cause problems with your claim?

0 coins

They were able to correct it but it delayed my claim by about a week. That's why it's so important to double-check everything before submitting.

0 coins

Don't be discouraged if you don't hear back right away. It can take a few days to a couple weeks to get your determination letter. That's normal processing time.

0 coins

What should I expect in the determination letter?

0 coins

It will tell you if you're approved, your weekly benefit amount, and how long you can collect benefits. It also explains your job search requirements.

0 coins

Just want to add - if you're having trouble with the online application, there are also phone and in-person options, though they're much slower. The online route is definitely the way to go if you can manage it.

0 coins

Good to know there are other options as backup. I'm pretty comfortable with online forms so I'll stick with that.

0 coins

The online application is available 24/7 too, which is convenient if you're a night owl like me.

0 coins

I applied online last year and my biggest tip is to have everything ready before you start. I had to stop in the middle to find some documents and when I came back my session had expired. Wasted like an hour.

0 coins

That's exactly the kind of thing I wanted to avoid. I'll make sure to gather everything first.

0 coins

Smart move. Also, if you have any questions about eligibility or the process, Washington ESD has a pretty good FAQ section on their website.
