How do I change my address for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I moved to a new apartment last month and need to update my address with Washington ESD for my unemployment benefits. I'm worried about missing important mail or having issues with my weekly claims if my address isn't current. Does anyone know the best way to change your address? Can I do it online through eServices or do I need to call? I don't want to mess anything up with my claim.

You can update your address online through the Washington ESD eServices portal. Just log in to your account and look for the 'Update Contact Information' section. It should take effect pretty quickly - usually within 24-48 hours.

•Thank you! I'll try logging in tonight. Do I need to do anything else or will it automatically update for all my unemployment stuff?

LunarLegend
•It should update everything automatically, but double-check that your mailing address changed in all sections of your account to be safe.

You can update your address through eServices on the Washington ESD website. Log into your account and look for 'Update Personal Information' or 'Change Address' in your profile settings. Make sure to do this ASAP because any mail they send will go to your old address otherwise.

•Thanks! I'll try logging in again and look for that option. I must have missed it the first time.

•sometimes that option is hidden under account settings, not obvious where it is

I tried doing this online last year and it was a nightmare. The system kept giving me error messages and wouldn't save my new address. Ended up having to call Washington ESD multiple times.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about. How long did it take to get through when you called?

Malik Jackson
•Forever. I was on hold for like 2 hours each time I called. The phone system is terrible.

•If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you reach agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

Make sure you update your address BEFORE you file your next weekly claim. I forgot to do this and it caused all sorts of confusion with my payments.
0 coins
Emma Davis
•What kind of confusion? Did your payments get delayed?
0 coins
Ravi Patel
•Yeah, they held up my payment for like a week while they verified my new address. Had to provide proof of residency and everything.

I just went through this exact thing! The online system worked fine for me but you have to make sure you have your Social Security number and PIN ready. Also update your phone number at the same time if that changed too.

•Good tip about the phone number. I did get a new number when I moved so I should update both.

Omar Zaki
•Wait, do we need to notify them about phone number changes too? I thought that was just for addresses.
0 coins
Freya Andersen
•Yeah, any contact info changes should be updated. They might need to reach you about your claim.

I had to change my address last year and it was pretty straightforward online. Just make sure you update it everywhere - not just your main profile but also in any correspondence preferences. You don't want important notices going to your old place.

Butch Sledgehammer
•Good point about correspondence preferences. I hadn't thought about that part.

•Wait, do I need to update my address with WorkSource too or just Washington ESD?

•Good question - I'd update both to be safe since they're connected for job search requirements.

If you can't find the option online, you might need to call. I know everyone hates calling Washington ESD but sometimes that's the only way. I actually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual person when I couldn't reach them myself. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

•Yeah it worked for me when I had an adjudication issue. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing. i can never find anything on there. why cant they make it easier???

•I agree the website could be better designed. Try looking under 'My Account' then 'Personal Information' - that's usually where the address update option is.

Ugh the Washington ESD phone system is THE WORST. I spent 3 hours on hold last week just to ask about my weekly claim status.

•tell me about it! I gave up after 2 hours yesterday

Freya Ross
•That's why online is usually better if you can figure out where the options are hidden.

Just to clarify the process - when you update your address, it shouldn't affect your benefit amount or weekly claim filing. It's just updating where they send correspondence and potentially direct deposit notifications if you still get those mailed.

Butch Sledgehammer
•That's reassuring. I was worried it might trigger some kind of review or delay.

•nah address changes are routine, not like changing your work status or something

Pro tip: After you update your address online, print out or screenshot the confirmation page. I've had Washington ESD claim they never received address changes before, so having proof saved me from a lot of hassle.
0 coins
Emma Davis
•That's really smart advice. I'll definitely save a screenshot. Have you had other issues with Washington ESD not processing changes?
0 coins
Isabella Oliveira
•A few times, yeah. Their system can be glitchy. That's actually why I started using Claimyr when I need to talk to someone - way easier than trying to get through their regular phone lines.

Do we have to report address changes within a certain timeframe? Like is there a deadline for updating this stuff?
0 coins
LunarLegend
•You're supposed to report changes within 10 days, but I don't think they really enforce that strictly for address changes. Still better to do it sooner rather than later.

Chloe Robinson
•Ok good to know. I moved like 3 weeks ago and just remembered I need to update this.

Another thing - if you moved to a different county, that might affect your job search requirements. Washington ESD has different WorkSource offices in different areas.
0 coins
Emma Davis
•I didn't think about that. I did move to a different county. Will they automatically assign me to a new WorkSource office?
0 coins
Malik Jackson
•I think so, but you might want to double-check. The job search requirements can be different depending on your area.

If you moved to a different county or state you might need to update other things too like your job search area requirements. Not sure if that applies to you but worth mentioning.

Does anyone know if changing your address affects your job search log requirements? Like do you need to search in your new area now?
0 coins
Sergio Neal
•Generally yes, your job search should be appropriate for your current location and commuting distance.

Atticus Domingo
•I think there's flexibility as long as you can realistically commute to the jobs you're applying for.

I had to change my address twice last year due to some housing issues. The second time I just called because I was paranoid about the online system messing up. Took forever to get through but the agent was helpful.
0 coins
Emma Davis
•How long were you on hold when you called?
0 coins
Diego Flores
•Like an hour and a half. It was brutal. I kept hanging up and calling back hoping for a shorter wait.

•That's exactly why I recommend Claimyr - they handle the waiting for you and get you connected to an actual person without sitting on hold forever.

I tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got through to Washington ESD in like 20 minutes instead of calling for hours myself.

Quick question - does changing your address affect your benefit amount at all? Like if you move to an area with different cost of living?
0 coins
LunarLegend
•No, your benefit amount is based on your previous wages, not where you live. Moving within Washington state won't change your weekly benefit amount.

Omar Zaki
•Good to know, thanks! I was worried about that.

Make sure you also update your address with the post office if you haven't already. Sometimes Washington ESD mail gets forwarded weird and it can cause delays.

Emma Davis
•Good point. I did set up mail forwarding but I should probably update my address with all my important accounts anyway.

Make sure your new address is in the system before you file your next weekly claim. I've heard of people having issues if there's a mismatch.
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
•Good point, I'll update it today before I file this week.

•Yes, always better to update personal info between weekly claims rather than during the process.

If you're having trouble with the website, sometimes clearing your browser cache helps. The Washington ESD site can be glitchy.

Don't forget to update your address with the post office too if you haven't already. Some Washington ESD mail might still come via regular mail.

Just a heads up that if you get any overpayment notices or important legal documents, those might still go to your old address for a while even after you update. Keep an eye on your old mailbox if possible.

Butch Sledgehammer
•Thankfully I'm still in touch with my old landlord so I can check on that. Thanks for the warning.

If anyone else is reading this thread later, I'll add that you should also check if your direct deposit information needs updating if you changed banks when you moved. Different issue but related.

•Didn't change banks but that's another good thing to double-check. Thanks!

Last thought - if you moved because of work or job searching, make sure that doesn't affect your eligibility. Moving for work reasons is usually fine but worth documenting.
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
•I moved for personal reasons, not work-related, but good to know for others.

•Right, moving for work can actually be a good thing for your claim since it shows you're actively seeking employment.

I'm dealing with something similar but I'm moving out of state. That's probably more complicated than just changing addresses within Washington, right?
0 coins
LunarLegend
•Yes, moving out of state is more complex. You'll need to contact Washington ESD directly about interstate benefits. The requirements and processes are different.
0 coins
Sean Flanagan
•Ugh, that sounds like a headache. I'll probably need to call them then.
0 coins
Isabella Oliveira
•For something that complex, definitely call. And if you have trouble getting through, Claimyr can help you reach an agent faster - might be worth it for an interstate move situation.

For future reference, you can also update your address by mailing a written request to Washington ESD, but that takes way longer than doing it online. Online is definitely the way to go.

Great to see this thread helped so many people! Just wanted to add that after you update your address online, it's also worth double-checking that it updated correctly by logging back in after a day or two. Sometimes the system takes a bit to fully process the change, and you want to make sure everything looks right before your next weekly claim filing.
0 coins
Noland Curtis
•That's really smart advice! I didn't think about checking back to verify it went through properly. Better to catch any issues early rather than find out during a weekly claim filing when it might cause delays.

Just want to emphasize what others have said about keeping documentation! I learned this the hard way when Washington ESD had a system glitch that reset some address changes. Always screenshot your confirmation page and save any confirmation emails. Also, if you have direct deposit set up, double-check that your address change doesn't somehow affect your banking information - I've seen cases where updating one thing accidentally clears out other fields in their system. Better safe than sorry!

Javier Torres
•This is such valuable advice! I hadn't considered that updating one piece of information might accidentally affect other fields in their system. That's definitely something to watch out for. It's frustrating that we have to be so careful with these government systems, but documentation really is key. Thanks for sharing your experience - it'll help others avoid the same issues!
