How to change mother's maiden name on Washington ESD unemployment account
I need to update my mother's maiden name on my Washington ESD unemployment account because I realized I entered it wrong when I first applied. The name I have on file doesn't match what's on my other documents and I'm worried this could cause issues with my weekly claims or if they need to verify my identity. Has anyone successfully changed this information? Do I need to call Washington ESD or can I do it online through my SecureAccess Washington account?

You'll need to call Washington ESD directly for security information changes like mother's maiden name. That's not something you can update online yourself through your account.

•Thanks, I figured that might be the case. Do you know if this will hold up my weekly claims while they're processing the change?

•It shouldn't affect your weekly claims as long as you keep filing them on time. The security questions are separate from your claim processing.

I had to do this exact same thing last year! You definitely need to call them. Have your ID ready and be prepared to answer other security questions to verify your identity before they'll make the change.

•What other security questions did they ask you? I want to make sure I have everything ready before I call.

•They asked for my SSN, date of birth, and some employment history details from my claim. Pretty standard stuff but good to have it all in front of you.

Good luck getting through to them on the phone. I've been trying for weeks to get someone about my adjudication issue and can barely get past the busy signal.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it when I was having trouble reaching Washington ESD. It's at claimyr.com and they help you get through to an actual agent instead of waiting on hold forever. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit? I'm so frustrated with not being able to reach anyone that I'm willing to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's real, they basically help you navigate the phone system to actually reach a human agent. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

Make sure you have documentation proving what the correct maiden name should be - like your mother's birth certificate or marriage certificate. They might ask for proof.

Keisha Robinson
•That's a good point. I have copies of her marriage certificate so I should be covered there.

Why is this even necessary? Seems like unnecessary security theater to me. Half the time these security questions don't even help with actual identity verification.

•It's required by federal regulations for unemployment benefits. They have to verify identity to prevent fraud, even if it seems annoying.

•I get preventing fraud but making people jump through hoops for simple corrections is ridiculous. The whole system needs an overhaul.

Try calling first thing in the morning right when they open. That's usually the best time to get through without waiting forever.

•What time do they open? Is it 8 AM?

Paolo Conti
•Yes, 8 AM Pacific time on weekdays. Have your phone ready to dial right at 8:00.

•That's encouraging to hear it's a quick fix once you actually get someone on the phone.

Another option that worked for me when I couldn't get through by phone was using that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Sometimes it's worth paying a little to save yourself the headache of calling all day.

•How much does something like that cost? Is it worth it for a simple change like this?

•I think it's pretty reasonable considering how much time it saves. Check their website for current info. For me it was worth not having to take multiple days off work trying to call.

Just to clarify - you'll want to call the main Washington ESD customer service line, not the technical support line. The customer service reps can handle account information changes.

•Good to know, thanks. I was wondering if there was a specific department I needed to reach.

Update us on how it goes! I'm curious to see if you have better luck getting through than I've been having.

this happened to my sister too. she said they were really helpful once she got through. the agent walked her through exactly what info they needed and got it sorted out right away

•That's reassuring to hear. Sounds like it's just a matter of actually reaching someone.

One more tip - have your claim number ready when you call. They'll ask for it right away to pull up your account.

•Perfect, I have that saved in my phone already. Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone!

I wouldn't worry too much about it affecting your claim unless they specifically flag your account for some reason. Most of the time these security question mismatches only matter if there's already some other issue.

•That makes me feel better. I was worried it might trigger some kind of fraud investigation or something.

If anyone else is reading this and having trouble getting through to Washington ESD for any reason, seriously consider checking out Claimyr. It's designed specifically for situations like this where you need to reach an actual person at the unemployment office.

•Thanks for the recommendation. I've been struggling to get through about my own issue and this might be exactly what I need.

also make sure you write down who you talk to and when, just in case there are any issues later. always good to have a record of these kinds of changes

•Smart advice. I'll definitely keep notes on the call when I make it.

The whole security question system is so outdated anyway. Half the time people don't remember exactly how they entered information years ago.

•True, but until they update the system we have to work with what we've got. At least they let you correct mistakes when you catch them.

OP, let us know how the call goes tomorrow! I'm sure others will find this thread helpful if they run into the same issue.

UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Washington ESD! Took about 25 minutes of waiting but I got through. The agent was super helpful and changed my mother's maiden name in about 3 minutes once I verified my identity. She said it won't affect my weekly claims at all. Thanks everyone for the advice!
