How to sign up for unemployment online - Washington ESD website confusing
I just lost my job last week and need to figure out how to sign up for unemployment online through Washington ESD. I've been to their website but it's really confusing with all the different login portals and I'm not sure which one to use. Do I need to create a SecureAccess Washington account first or can I just apply directly? Also worried I'm going to mess something up and delay my benefits. Has anyone gone through this process recently?

You'll want to go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. Yes, you need a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first - that's the login system for all state services. Create that account first, then you can access the unemployment application through it.

•Thank you! So I create the SAW account first, then apply for UI benefits through that login?

Fiona Gallagher
•Exactly. The SAW account is like your gateway to all Washington state online services including unemployment.

Make sure you have all your employment info ready before you start - last employer's name and address, your Social Security number, dates you worked there, reason for separation. The application will time out if you take too long looking for information.

•Good point, I'll gather all that info first. How long does the application usually take to complete?

•About 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready. Don't rush through it though, mistakes can cause delays later.

I just went through this process last month and it was a nightmare trying to get through to Washington ESD on the phone when I had questions. If you run into issues, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you connected to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of Claimyr before, does it actually work? The ESD phone lines are impossible.

•Yeah it worked for me. I was stuck in adjudication and needed to talk to someone. Used their service and got through same day.

•That sounds too good to be true tbh. How much does it cost?

WARNING: Make absolutely sure you're on the real Washington ESD website. There are scam sites that look similar. The official site is esd.wa.gov - don't use any other URL that claims to be for Washington unemployment applications.

•Thanks for the warning! I'll double check I'm on the right site.

•Yes this is important! I almost fell for a fake site that wanted me to pay to apply.

ugh the whole process is such a pain. took me 3 tries to get my application submitted without errors. and then it takes forever to get approved anyway

Xan Dae
•What kind of errors did you run into? Want to avoid those if possible.

•mostly date formatting issues and the system timing out. just be patient and double check everything before hitting submit

One more tip - after you submit your application, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. Don't forget about this step! Your first weekly claim will be available the Sunday after you apply. Set a reminder on your phone.

Xan Dae
•Good to know! Do I file weekly claims through the same SAW account?
0 coins
Fiona Gallagher
•Yes, everything goes through your SAW account once it's set up. Weekly claims, checking payment status, updating your profile, etc.

Just remember you have to be actively looking for work and keeping a job search log. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week. Don't skip this requirement or you could lose your benefits.

•What counts as job search activities? Just applying for jobs?

Hattie Carson
•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, career counseling, creating profiles on job sites - there's a whole list on the ESD website.

•And keep detailed records! They can audit your job search log at any time.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get your first payment after applying? I applied 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything.

Fiona Gallagher
•There's usually a one week waiting period, then it can take 2-3 weeks for processing if there are no issues. If it's been longer, your claim might be in adjudication.

Dyllan Nantx
•How do I know if it's in adjudication? My account just says 'processing'.

•If you can't get through to ESD to check, that's another situation where Claimyr might help. They can get you connected to find out what's holding up your claim.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible after losing your job. You can't backdate claims in Washington, so every week you wait is money you're losing.

•I lost my job last Tuesday, so I should apply this week then?

•Yes, apply immediately. The sooner the better. Your benefit year starts the week you apply, not when you lost your job.

Pro tip: if the website is running slow or timing out, try applying early in the morning or late at night when fewer people are using it. Peak times can be really frustrating.

•That's smart, I'll try doing it tonight after work hours.

•Yeah weekends are usually better too, less traffic on the site.

I'm in the same boat - just got laid off from my retail job yesterday. This thread is really helpful, going to start gathering my paperwork now.

•Good luck! Sounds like we're both figuring this out at the same time.

•Make sure you have your last pay stub and any separation paperwork from your employer.

Another thing - if you worked in another state recently, the process might be different. Washington might tell you to file in the other state instead, depending on where you earned more wages.

Xan Dae
•I've only worked in Washington for the past 3 years so I should be good.

•Perfect, then Washington ESD will handle your whole claim.

The SAW account setup can be tricky too. Make sure you use a strong password and write it down somewhere safe. If you get locked out, it's another headache to deal with.

Xan Dae
•Good point, I'll use my password manager for this.

•And don't forget to verify your email address after creating the account!

Once you get your claim approved and start receiving benefits, set up direct deposit right away. Paper checks take forever and can get lost in the mail.

Xan Dae
•Can I set up direct deposit during the application process or do I have to wait?
0 coins
Collins Angel
•You can set it up during the application. Just have your bank routing and account numbers ready.

Don't panic if you make a mistake on your application. You can usually correct information later, but it's better to get it right the first time to avoid delays.

Xan Dae
•That's reassuring. I'm worried I'll mess something up.

•Just take your time and read everything carefully. The application will walk you through each step.

If you're having trouble with the online application, some WorkSource centers can help you apply in person. But calling ahead is a good idea to make sure they're offering that service.

•Good to know there's a backup option if the website doesn't work for me.

•Though if you need to reach ESD for any reason, I'd still recommend trying Claimyr. Much faster than trying to call directly.

Remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or you'll owe at tax time. Think about this when you're setting up your claim.
0 coins
Xan Dae
•Oh I didn't know that. Probably better to have taxes withheld then.
0 coins
Adaline Wong
•Yeah, it's usually easier than getting a big tax bill later. You can change this setting anytime through your SAW account.

Last thing - save confirmation numbers and print out important pages from your application. Technology glitches happen and you want proof of what you submitted.

Xan Dae
•Great advice, I'll screenshot everything important.

•Yes! And keep records of all your job search activities too. You never know when ESD might ask for them.
