How do you sign up for unemployment online Washington ESD - confused about the process
I lost my job last week and need to file for unemployment benefits but I'm totally confused about how to sign up for unemployment online through Washington ESD. I've been to their website but there's so many different links and I don't know where to start. Do I need to create an account first? What information do I need to have ready? This is my first time dealing with unemployment and I'm worried I'll mess something up. Can someone walk me through the basic steps?

You'll need to go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. First step is creating a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one already. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thanks! Do I need exact dates or just approximate months? I worked a few different jobs last year.

•Try to be as exact as possible but approximate is better than nothing. Washington ESD will verify with employers anyway.

honestly the whole online system is a mess, took me forever to figure out. you have to make sure you're on the right website too because there's fake ones out there

•Wait what? There are fake unemployment websites? How do I know I'm on the right one?

•The official Washington ESD site is esd.wa.gov - always make sure you see that exact URL. Never enter personal info on sites that ask for payments or fees.

If you're having trouble getting through on the phone to speak with someone about the application process, I had success using Claimyr recently. It's a service that helps you get connected to Washington ESD agents without waiting on hold for hours. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me time when I needed to ask questions about my claim.

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit? Seems weird to use a third party service for government stuff.

Benjamin Carter
•Yeah it's legitimate, they just help you get through the phone system. Check out claimyr.com if you want to see for yourself. I was skeptical too but it actually worked.

Make sure you have your bank account info ready for direct deposit setup. Also write down your username and password somewhere safe because you'll need to log in weekly to file your claims. The system locks you out if you forget your login info and it's a pain to reset.

•Good point about writing it down. How often do I have to file claims?

Isaac Wright
•Every week, usually on Sunday. You'll get instructions after your initial application is processed.

•Wait I thought it was every two weeks? I've been doing it wrong this whole time!

No it's definitely weekly claims in Washington. You file every week even if you don't get paid every week. Missing a weekly claim can mess up your benefits so don't skip it.

•Ugh great now I need to figure out if I messed up my claim. This system is so confusing.

•Call Washington ESD as soon as possible to explain the situation. They might be able to fix it.

THE WASHINGTON ESD WEBSITE IS TRASH. Sorry for yelling but I spent 3 hours trying to create an account last month and it kept timing out. Their system crashes constantly and the error messages don't tell you anything useful.

•Oh no that's exactly what I'm worried about. Did you eventually get it to work?

Maya Lewis
•Eventually yes but I had to try at different times of day. Early morning seemed to work better, maybe less traffic on their servers.

try using a different browser if one doesn't work. had issues with chrome but firefox worked fine

•Same here! Chrome gave me problems but Edge worked.

One important thing - make sure you apply as soon as possible after losing your job. There's a waiting week in Washington but your claim starts from when you apply, not when you lost your job. Don't wait thinking you might get hired somewhere quickly.

Ruby Garcia
•What's a waiting week? Does that mean I don't get paid the first week?
0 coins
Benjamin Carter
•Correct, you don't get benefits for your first eligible week. It's just how the system works in Washington.

•That's so stupid. Like people who just lost their jobs don't need money right away...

Also be prepared for your claim to go into adjudication if there are any questions about why you lost your job. Mine took 3 weeks to get approved because they had to verify I was laid off and didn't quit.

Ruby Garcia
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

Isaac Wright
•It just means they're reviewing your case to make sure you're eligible. Common if you were fired or quit, or if there are questions about your work history.

Don't forget you'll need to do job searches every week too. Keep track of where you apply because they audit that stuff.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

Amelia Dietrich
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Could be applications, networking, interviews, etc.

Here's the step-by-step process: 1) Go to esd.wa.gov 2) Click 'Apply for Benefits' 3) Create SAW account if needed 4) Fill out the application with your work history 5) Wait for approval 6) Start filing weekly claims. The whole application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready.

•Smart move. I tried to wing it and had to start over because I didn't have my previous employer's exact address.

if you have trouble with the online system crashing or timing out like others mentioned, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier might help you get through to someone who can walk you through it. I used it when I couldn't figure out why my weekly claim wasn't going through

•Yeah I might need to try that if I run into problems. The website does seem pretty unreliable based on what everyone's saying.

Pro tip: take screenshots of every page as you fill out the application. If the system crashes you'll have proof of what you entered and won't have to start completely over.

•Genius idea! I wish I had thought of that.

Just want to add that the whole process is designed to be confusing and make you give up. Don't let it discourage you, keep trying even if it's frustrating. You earned those benefits.

•Thanks for the encouragement. I was starting to feel overwhelmed but I'll stick with it.

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file in a different state depending on where you earned the most wages. Washington ESD can help you figure that out.

•I only worked in Washington so I should be good there.

expect to wait at least a week or two before you hear anything back after applying. and then probably another week before you actually get paid if approved. the whole system moves slow

•Good to know, I'll plan my budget accordingly.

If you do run into issues during the application process and need to speak with Washington ESD directly, definitely consider using that Claimyr service I mentioned. Much easier than trying to call on your own and getting busy signals or being on hold forever.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•Check their website at claimyr.com for details. For me it was worth it to avoid the hassle of trying to get through myself.

Last piece of advice - read everything carefully and answer honestly. Don't try to game the system because they will catch inconsistencies and it'll just delay your benefits.

•Definitely planning to be completely honest. Thanks everyone for all the help!

good luck! the first time is always the hardest but once you get through it you'll know what to expect if you ever need benefits again

•Hopefully I won't need to use it again but it's good to know the process now.

Feel free to come back and ask if you run into specific problems during the application. This community is pretty good about helping each other navigate the Washington ESD system.

•I will definitely do that. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to explain everything!
