How do you file for unemployment - Washington ESD application process confused me
I got laid off last week and need to figure out how to file for unemployment benefits. I went to the Washington ESD website but there's so much information and I'm not sure where to start. Do I need to create an account first? What documents do I need to have ready? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and delay my benefits. Has anyone gone through this process recently who can walk me through the basic steps?

First thing you need to do is go to esd.wa.gov and create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one already. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and employment information for the last 18 months. Make sure you have your last employer's exact business name and address - not just what you called them at work.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the employer information?
0 coins
Abigail bergen
•Just the employer info for the initial application. Pay stubs might be helpful later if there are questions about your wages, but Washington ESD gets that info directly from employers.

Make sure you file your claim the same week you become unemployed, don't wait! There's a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits, but if you delay filing, you could lose out on weeks of eligibility.

•I was laid off on Wednesday - should I file this week or wait until next week?

•File this week! The sooner the better. You can file a claim any day of the week online.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone for help with your application, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped me when I was stuck on a verification issue.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke from being laid off.

•It's worth checking out their site for the details. For me it was better than spending hours calling and never getting through.

The online application is pretty straightforward once you get started. Just take your time and read each question carefully. Don't rush through it because you might have to wait weeks for adjudication if you make mistakes on key questions about why you're unemployed.

•What kind of questions do they ask about why you're unemployed?
0 coins
Toot-n-Mighty
•They'll ask if you were fired, laid off, quit, or left for other reasons. Be honest but make sure you understand the difference - being laid off due to lack of work is different from being terminated for cause.

•This is so important! I initially said I was 'fired' when I meant laid off and it caused a huge delay in my claim.

You'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington as part of the process. They'll make you do that before you can receive benefits. It's basically their job search system.

•Is that a separate website or part of the Washington ESD site?

DeShawn Washington
•Separate website - worksourcewa.com. But the Washington ESD application will link you there when you need to register.

ugh the whole process is so confusing... I tried filing last month and got stuck on some question about 'able and available' for work. What does that even mean??

Abigail bergen
•Able and available means you're physically able to work and actively looking for work. If you have restrictions like you can only work certain hours or have medical limitations, that might affect your eligibility.

•ok that makes sense. I was overthinking it I guess.

One thing they don't make clear is that you have to file your weekly claims every week to get paid, even after your initial application is approved. Don't forget to do that or you'll miss out on benefits for those weeks.

•How do you file the weekly claims? Same website?

Ahooker-Equator
•Yes, same SAW account. You'll get instructions after your initial claim is processed.

I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back. Is this normal? My claim status just says 'under review' and I'm starting to panic about paying my rent.

•If it's been 3 weeks, your claim might be in adjudication. This can happen if there are questions about your separation from work or eligibility. You should try calling Washington ESD to check on the status.

•This is exactly the situation where Claimyr helped me. When you can't get through the normal way, they can get you connected to an actual person at Washington ESD.

Make sure you have your bank account info ready for direct deposit. Getting a debit card takes longer and has fees.

•Good tip! I didn't think about that.

The whole system is designed to make you give up. Half the links don't work and when you finally get to the application, it times out if you take too long reading the questions. So frustrating!

•Pro tip: write down your answers on paper first, then fill out the application quickly. The timeout is real and annoying.

Don't forget you'll need to report any severance pay or vacation payout from your employer. That can affect when your benefits start.

Kirsuktow DarkBlade
•I got two weeks severance - does that mean I can't file for two weeks?
0 coins
Jamal Brown
•You can file right away, but the severance might delay when you actually receive payments. Washington ESD will calculate how it affects your benefits.

saved me when I couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD for weeks. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to sort things out.

I'm in the same boat - just got laid off from my restaurant job. This thread is really helpful, thanks everyone!

•Good luck! Restaurant workers sometimes have unique situations with tips and multiple employers, so make sure you report all your work history accurately.

The application asks for so much detail about previous employers. I worked at like 5 different places in the last 18 months, this is going to take forever.

Toot-n-Mighty
•It's tedious but important to be thorough. Your benefit amount is based on your work history, so leaving out employers could hurt your weekly benefit amount.

Does anyone know if you can file if you're still working part-time? I got my hours cut but not completely laid off.
0 coins
Abigail bergen
•Yes, you can file for partial unemployment if your hours were significantly reduced. You'll need to report your part-time earnings each week, and Washington ESD will calculate a partial benefit.

•That's a relief! I wasn't sure if I qualified.

Make sure to keep copies of everything you submit. I had to resubmit documents because they said they never received them the first time.

The job search requirements seem overwhelming. Do you really have to apply to 3 jobs every week?
0 coins
DeShawn Washington
•Yes, you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. You can use the WorkSource system to track this.

Liam Murphy
•What counts as a 'job search contact'?

DeShawn Washington
•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews. There's a list on the WorkSource website.

This whole process makes me anxious. What if I mess up something important and get denied?

•Take it one step at a time and be honest in your answers. If you do make a mistake, you can usually appeal or provide additional information.

Successfully filed and got approved in about 10 days. The key is being patient and following up when needed. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you get stuck.

remember to check your spam folder for emails from Washington ESD. Almost missed an important message about my claim because it went to spam.
