Where can I get help filing for unemployment - Washington ESD resources?
I got laid off last week and need to file for unemployment but I'm completely lost on where to start. The Washington ESD website has so much information and I don't want to mess anything up. Are there places that can help walk me through the filing process? I've never done this before and I'm worried about making mistakes that could delay my benefits.

Start with the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov - they have a step by step guide for filing your initial claim. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employment info?

Alberto Souchard
•Just the basic info for filing, but keep your pay stubs handy in case they ask for verification later during adjudication.

WorkSource centers can help too but honestly their availability has been hit or miss since COVID. The online filing is pretty straightforward once you get started.

•I tried calling WorkSource last month and couldn't get through. The website is probably your best bet.

If you run into issues with your claim getting stuck or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their site is claimyr.com. Saved me hours of trying to call.

•How does that work exactly? Do they call for you?

•They help you get connected to Washington ESD agents when the phone lines are jammed. Really useful if your claim gets stuck in adjudication or you need to resolve issues.

The key things to remember when filing: be completely honest about why you lost your job, report ALL income including part-time work, and make sure you're available and actively looking for work. Any discrepancies can trigger adjudication which delays your benefits.

•What counts as 'actively looking for work'? I just got laid off yesterday.

•You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. This includes applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, etc. Washington ESD has specific requirements.

•Wait I thought it was 5 activities per week now?

•It's 3 for most people, but can be higher depending on your situation. Check the requirements in your account after filing.

File as soon as possible! Benefits don't start until the week you file, so don't wait. I made that mistake and lost two weeks of benefits.

•Good to know! I was planning to wait until next week but I'll file today.

The process itself isn't too bad but be prepared for potential delays. My claim went into adjudication for 6 weeks because they needed to verify my employment dates. Just be patient and keep filing your weekly claims even if it shows pending.

•6 weeks?? That's insane. How did you survive financially?

•Had to borrow money from family. The system is overwhelmed but eventually it worked out.

Make sure you understand the difference between your waiting week and processing delays. There's a one week waiting period that's normal, but adjudication delays are different and can take much longer.

•What's the difference exactly?

•Waiting week is just the first week you file - you don't get paid for that week. Adjudication happens when they need to investigate something about your claim, like why you lost your job or verify employment.

Libraries sometimes have computers and staff who can help if you don't have internet at home. Some have specific hours for unemployment assistance.

•That's a great idea, I didn't think of that!

Don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid, even if your initial claim is still processing. Miss a week and you could lose benefits for that week permanently.

•This is so important! I missed one week early on and couldn't get it back.

•How do weekly claims work? Is it the same website?
0 coins
Chris Elmeda
•Yes, same site. You log in every week and answer questions about any work you did, money you earned, and confirm you're still looking for work.

If you have any military service make sure to mention that - there might be additional programs available through WorkSource for veterans.

•I'm not a veteran but good to know for others reading this.

The Washington ESD customer service is pretty backed up but when I needed help with my claim status, I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Actually got through to an agent same day instead of waiting weeks for a callback.

•How much does that cost though?

•Worth it when you consider how much time you save not calling all day. Plus if your benefits are delayed it pays for itself quickly.

Just keep all your documentation organized - termination letter, pay stubs, any correspondence from Washington ESD. You might need it later if there are questions about your claim.

•Should I scan everything or are photos on my phone okay?

Shelby Bauman
•Scans are better quality but phone photos work too as long as they're clear and readable.

One thing that confused me was the difference between being laid off and fired. Make sure you're clear on which one applies to your situation because it affects your eligibility.

Nia Watson
•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so that should be straightforward right?
0 coins
Talia Klein
•Yeah that's textbook eligible. Just be consistent in how you describe it throughout the process.

PROTIP: Write down your username and password somewhere safe! I got locked out of my account multiple times trying to remember my login info.

•Use a password manager if you have one. Way better than writing it down.

Quinn Herbert
•True but at least write it down somewhere until you get the password manager set up!

The system can be glitchy sometimes, especially on Sundays when everyone is filing their weekly claims. If you get error messages just try again later.

Nia Watson
•Good to know! I'll avoid Sunday if possible.

If your employer contests your claim don't panic. It happens sometimes even for legitimate layoffs. Just respond truthfully to any requests for information from Washington ESD.

Nia Watson
•Why would they contest a layoff?
0 coins
Laila Fury
•Sometimes it's automatic, sometimes they're trying to avoid paying higher unemployment taxes. Usually gets resolved if you were truly laid off through no fault of your own.

Another vote for Claimyr if you run into problems. When my claim got flagged for ID verification I was able to talk to an agent through their service and get it resolved in one call instead of waiting weeks for a callback.

•ID verification issues seem really common lately. Glad you found a way to get it handled quickly.

Don't overthink it too much. The initial filing is pretty straightforward and you can always call or use services like Claimyr if you need help later. The important thing is to file quickly so you don't lose any potential benefits.

Final reminder - make sure you have a reliable way to receive mail and check your email regularly. Washington ESD sends important notices both ways and missing correspondence can cause problems with your claim.

•Will do! Thanks again everyone for all the advice.
