How do you file for unemployment with Washington ESD - completely lost on where to start
I got laid off yesterday and everyone keeps telling me to file for unemployment but I have no idea how to even begin. I've never done this before and the Washington ESD website is confusing. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do it online? What information do I need to have ready? I'm really stressed about this whole process and don't want to mess anything up. Can someone walk me through the basic steps?

You can file completely online through the Washington ESD website. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the past 18 months, and bank account info for direct deposit. The whole process takes about 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready.

•Thank you! Do I need to have exact dates of employment or just approximate?

•Exact dates if possible - they'll verify with your employers anyway. But don't stress too much if you're off by a few days.

Make sure you file as soon as possible! There's a waiting week in Washington so the sooner you apply, the sooner you'll start getting benefits. Also, you'll need to register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirements.

•What's WorkSource Washington? Is that separate from the unemployment application?

•It's the state job search system. You have to register there and do job search activities each week to keep getting benefits.

I struggled with this too when I got laid off. The Washington ESD phone lines are always busy and it's nearly impossible to get through. I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual ESD agent when I had questions about my application. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save not calling over and over. Plus they actually get you through to someone who can help.

The online application is pretty straightforward but be prepared for it to take a while to process. Mine took about 2 weeks before I got my first payment, and that was without any issues.

•Two weeks?! I was hoping to get something sooner than that.

•That's just how long it takes. Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even while you're waiting for approval.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR PAPERWORK READY BEFORE YOU START! I had to stop halfway through because I didn't have my W2 and then the system timed out and I had to start over. So frustrating.

•What specific paperwork do I need? Just W2s?

James Martinez
•W2s, pay stubs, any severance info, and your bank account details for direct deposit. Also write down all your previous employers' addresses and phone numbers.

Don't forget you have to do a phone interview too. They'll schedule it after you file and it can take a few weeks to get scheduled. Make sure you answer when they call or you'll have to reschedule.

•What do they ask in the phone interview?

•Basic stuff about why you're unemployed, if you're looking for work, if you have any other income. Nothing too scary.

I filed online last month and it was actually pretty easy once I got started. The hardest part was gathering all the employment info. Take your time and double-check everything before submitting.

•How long did it take you to fill out the application?

•About an hour, but I had to look up some old employment dates. If you have everything ready it should be faster.

One thing they don't tell you upfront - you'll need to file a weekly claim every week to get paid, even if your initial claim is still being processed. Don't skip this or you'll lose those weeks.

•How do I file the weekly claims?

•Through the same website. They become available every Sunday and you have until the following Saturday to file. Set a reminder on your phone.

The Washington ESD system has gotten better but it's still not perfect. Sometimes it crashes or runs slow, especially on Sundays when everyone is filing their weekly claims. Try to file early in the week if possible.

Ethan Anderson
•Good to know. I'll try to avoid Sundays then.

•Yeah, Monday or Tuesday mornings are usually the best times to use the system.

I was so confused when I first filed too. The key is to just start the application - you can save your progress and come back to it later if you need to find more information.

•That's reassuring. I was worried I'd have to do it all in one sitting.

•Nope, you can take breaks. Just make sure to submit it within a reasonable time frame.

Pro tip: create an account on SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first if you don't already have one. That's what you'll use to log into the ESD system and it can take a day or two to get verified.

•It's the state's login system for all their online services. You'll need it for unemployment, WorkSource, and other state programs.

When I had trouble with my application, I used Claimyr to get through to someone at ESD. Way better than trying to call on your own - I was on hold for hours before I found that service.

•Is it legitimate? I'm always wary of third-party services.

Sebastian Scott
•Yeah it's legit. They just help you get connected to the actual ESD phone agents. Check out their demo video if you want to see how it works.

Make sure you're eligible before you file. You need to have worked enough hours in the past year and lost your job through no fault of your own. If you quit or got fired for cause, you might not qualify.

Ethan Anderson
•I was laid off so I think I'm good. How many hours do you need to have worked?
0 coins
Emily Sanjay
•It's based on your earnings, not hours. You need to have earned at least $3,000 in your base year, with at least $1,500 in your highest quarter.

Don't panic if your claim goes into 'adjudication' status. It just means they need to verify something with your employer. It can take a few weeks but doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem.

•What happens during adjudication?

•They contact your employer to verify the reason for your separation. As long as you were truthful on your application, you should be fine.

I recommend filing on a weekday morning if possible. The system is less busy and you're more likely to get help if you run into problems.

•Good advice. I was planning to do it tonight but maybe I'll wait until tomorrow morning.

•Smart move. You'll have a much better experience that way.

Remember to report any severance pay or vacation payout you received. It might delay your benefits but you have to report it or you could get in trouble later.

Ethan Anderson
•I did get a small severance. Will that disqualify me completely?
0 coins
Elijah O'Reilly
•No, it just might delay when your benefits start. They'll calculate it based on how much you got and your weekly benefit amount.

The whole process is intimidating at first but once you get through the initial application, the weekly claims are pretty simple. Just answer the questions honestly and you'll be fine.

If you need to talk to someone at ESD and can't get through on the phone, definitely try Claimyr. I wish I had known about it when I was struggling to reach them about my claim status.

Ethan Anderson
•I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need to call but good to know there's an option.

Olivia Van-Cleve
•Better to know about it before you need it. The regular phone lines are basically impossible to get through on.

One last tip - set up direct deposit when you file. Getting a check in the mail takes forever and can get lost. Direct deposit is much faster and more reliable.

•Will do. Thanks for all the advice everyone - you've been incredibly helpful!
