How to file for unemployment online through Washington ESD - need step by step help
I just got laid off yesterday and I'm trying to figure out how to file for unemployment online but I'm completely lost. I've been to the Washington ESD website but there's so many different links and portals. Do I use the SecureAccess Washington (SAW) login or is there a different site? I've never filed for unemployment before and I'm worried I'm going to mess something up. Can someone walk me through the actual steps to get started with filing online?

The main website is esd.wa.gov - look for the 'Apply for Benefits' button on the homepage. You'll need to create an account first if you don't have one. Make sure you have your Social Security card, driver's license, and information about your last employer including dates of employment and reason for separation.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employer info?

Nina Fitzgerald
•Pay stubs help but aren't required for the initial application. Washington ESD will verify your wages with employers directly.

i filed online last month its pretty straightforward once you get started, just make sure you have all your info ready before you begin because it times out if you take too long

You'll need to create an account on SecureAccess Washington first if you don't have one. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' button. It will redirect you to the SAW portal where you can create your account and then file your initial application. Make sure you have your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment information from your last job ready.

•Thank you! Do I need my W-2 from last year or just information about my recent job?
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•You'll need employment info from the last 18 months, so if you had multiple jobs during that time, gather all that information. W-2s can be helpful but the main thing is having employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation.

The online system can be confusing at first but it's actually pretty straightforward once you get through it. After you create your SAW account, the unemployment application will ask for basic personal info, then employment history, then banking info for direct deposit. Takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your documents ready.

•That's not too bad. Is there a way to save and come back to it if I need to find more information?
0 coins
Miguel Ramos
•Yes, you can save your progress and return later. Just make sure to complete it within a reasonable timeframe - I think you have like 7 days to finish once you start.

Here's the step-by-step process: 1) Go to esd.wa.gov and click 'Apply for Benefits' 2) Create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one 3) Complete the initial claim application - this asks about your work history for the past 18 months 4) Submit required documents 5) Wait for your monetary determination letter. The online system will guide you through each step and tell you exactly what information is needed.

•This is super helpful! What documents do I need to upload?

Kiara Fisherman
•Usually just your driver's license or state ID. Sometimes they'll ask for additional verification but they'll tell you specifically what they need.

•One thing to add - if you can't get through the online system because of technical issues, there's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps people get through to Washington ESD agents directly. I used it when I had problems with my online application and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

One thing to be aware of - if you run into any issues with the online application or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD, their phone lines are absolutely swamped. I spent weeks trying to get through when I had questions about my application. Recently found out about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to ESD agents without the endless hold times. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Wish I'd known about it earlier!

•How does that work exactly? Do they charge a lot?
0 coins
QuantumQuasar
•They handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold for hours. Check out their site for details - I found it really helpful when I had adjudication issues.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE ASAP! Your claim starts from the date you file, not the date you lost your job. I waited a week thinking I needed more paperwork and that cost me a week of benefits that I can never get back.

•This is so important! File even if you're missing some information - you can always update it later.

the washington esd website is terrible honestly, it crashes all the time and the forms are confusing. took me 3 tries to get through the whole application without it timing out

•Try filing early in the morning or late at night when fewer people are on the system. Peak hours are definitely slower.

Makayla Shoemaker
•good tip, will remember that for my weekly claims

Make sure you file as soon as possible after your job ends. There's a waiting week in Washington but you still need to file right away to get your claim started. Don't wait thinking you'll find another job quickly - you can always stop claiming if you get hired.

Dmitry Sokolov
•Good point. I was thinking I'd wait a week or two to see if I could find something else first.
0 coins
Connor Gallagher
•Definitely don't wait. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim gets processed. Even if you find work next week, you'll have the claim established in case something happens again.

ugh the washington esd website is such a nightmare... took me like 3 tries to get through the whole application because it kept timing out. make sure you're on a good internet connection and don't have a bunch of other tabs open

Important reminder: after you file your initial claim online, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. The online system will show you when your next weekly claim is due. Don't miss these deadlines or your benefits will stop.
0 coins
Kylo Ren
•How do I file the weekly claims? Is that online too?
0 coins
Kiara Fisherman
•Yes, weekly claims are filed through the same esd.wa.gov portal. You'll log in and there will be a 'File Weekly Claim' option available.
0 coins
Jason Brewer
•and you have to do the job search stuff too, they ask about that in the weekly claims
0 coins
Ava Martinez
One more tip - after you submit your initial application, you'll need to file weekly claims to actually receive benefits. This is separate from the initial application and you do it every week you want to claim benefits. The system will tell you when your first weekly claim is due.
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•So I file the application once, then file weekly claims every week after that?
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•Exactly. The initial application establishes your claim, then weekly claims are how you actually request payment for each week you're unemployed and meet the requirements.

Does anyone know if you can file on weekends or is it only during business hours? I work part-time now and can only do this stuff on weekends.

•The online system is available 24/7 except for maintenance windows. You can definitely file on weekends.

One more thing about filing online - if you run into any issues or need to speak to someone at Washington ESD, the phone lines are absolutely horrible. I spent hours trying to get through. That's when I found Claimyr which actually got me connected to an agent in minutes instead of sitting on hold forever.

•Worked for me! They handle all the calling and waiting, then connect you when an agent is available. Way better than trying to call yourself.

Just want to add that the online system saves your progress so if it does time out you won't lose everything. But definitely save frequently just in case.
0 coins
Kylo Ren
•That's reassuring, I was worried about losing all my work if something went wrong.

After you submit your online application, keep checking your account regularly. Washington ESD will send you important notices through the online system, not just by mail. You might need to provide additional information or complete identity verification.

Kylo Ren
•How long does it usually take to get approved after filing online?
0 coins
Nina Fitzgerald
•Usually 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your claim. If it goes to adjudication for any reason, it can take longer.
0 coins
Savannah Vin
•Mine took 5 weeks because they had to verify my separation reason with my employer. The waiting is the worst part.

Keisha Johnson
Just a heads up that after you file, it might take a while before you hear anything back. My claim went into adjudication for like 6 weeks and I couldn't reach anyone at ESD to find out what was happening. The phone system is just brutal.
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•6 weeks?? What did you do during that time?
0 coins
Keisha Johnson
•Just waited and kept trying to call. Eventually it got resolved but it was really stressful not knowing what was going on.
0 coins
QuantumQuasar
That's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr would have been helpful. When claims go into adjudication, you really need to talk to someone to understand what's happening, but getting through on the phone is nearly impossible otherwise.

Keisha Johnson
•Yeah I'll definitely keep that in mind if I ever need to file again. Would have saved me a lot of stress.

Don't forget that you'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington and do job search activities. This is required to maintain eligibility for benefits. The system will walk you through this after your initial claim is processed.
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•Is that part of the initial application or something separate?
0 coins
Connor Gallagher
•It's separate. You'll get instructions about job search requirements after your claim is approved. Usually need to do 3 job search activities per week and log them in the WorkSource system.
0 coins
Yara Sayegh
the job search requirement is such a pain... you have to log everything and they can audit you at any time. make sure you keep good records of all your applications and networking activities
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•What counts as job search activities? Just applying for jobs?
0 coins
Yara Sayegh
•applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews... there's a list on the worksource website. just make sure you document everything

One thing that caught me off guard - they'll ask for your bank account information for direct deposit during the application. Have your routing and account numbers ready. You can also choose to get a debit card instead if you prefer.
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•Is direct deposit faster than the debit card?
0 coins
Miguel Ramos
•Direct deposit is usually faster and more reliable. The debit card option is there if you don't have a bank account or prefer that method.

I remember being so confused about the difference between filing the initial claim and filing weekly claims. The initial claim is like registering for unemployment, but you still have to file every week to actually get paid. Think of it like signing up for a service vs. actually using the service each week.
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•That's a really good way to think about it. So the initial claim is like setting up the account, then weekly claims are like making withdrawals?
0 coins
Paolo Longo
•Exactly! And if you skip a week of filing, you won't get paid for that week even if you were eligible.
0 coins
Ava Martinez
Also worth mentioning - be completely honest about the reason you lost your job. If you were laid off due to lack of work, that's different from being fired for cause. The system will verify this with your employer, so don't try to fudge the details.
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so that should be straightforward.
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•Perfect, that's exactly the kind of situation unemployment benefits are designed for. Should be no issues with your claim.

Pro tip: screenshot or save confirmation numbers from each step of the online application. If something goes wrong later you'll have proof of when you filed and what information you submitted.

Mason Stone
•This is smart advice. I always screenshot the final confirmation page.

Just wanted to add one more thing about getting help if you need it. I mentioned Claimyr earlier - they've been a lifesaver for people who need to actually talk to someone at ESD. Whether it's about your initial application, weekly claims, or any issues that come up, having a way to reach real people makes such a difference.

•It's worth checking out if you hit any roadblocks. The peace of mind alone is worth it when you're dealing with unemployment stress.

One last question - after I submit the application, how long does it usually take to hear back about whether it's approved?
0 coins
Connor Gallagher
•If everything is straightforward, you should hear back within a week or two. If there are any issues that require adjudication, it can take much longer - sometimes several weeks.
0 coins
Zainab Omar
•Hopefully mine will be straightforward since it was just a layoff. Thanks for all the info!

one thing that confused me when filing online was the work search requirements section. they ask if you're able and available for work and about job search activities but its not super clear what counts
0 coins
Kiara Fisherman
•The work search requirements depend on your situation. Most people need to do 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. This includes applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, etc.
0 coins
Jason Brewer
•wish they explained that better in the online form

I'm in the same situation as OP and this thread has been super helpful. Going to file my claim online tonight. One question - if I was laid off due to lack of work, is that considered 'involuntary separation'?
0 coins
Nina Fitzgerald
•Yes, layoffs due to lack of work are involuntary separations and you should qualify for benefits assuming you meet the other requirements.
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•Perfect, that's what I thought but wanted to make sure before I filed.

another heads up about filing online - if you have multiple jobs in the past year make sure you list ALL of them. i forgot about a part time job i had and it delayed my claim

The Washington ESD online system asks for your bank account info for direct deposit. Is it safe to enter that information?
0 coins
Kiara Fisherman
•Yes, the ESD website is secure for direct deposit setup. Just make sure you're on the official esd.wa.gov site. Direct deposit is much faster than waiting for paper checks.

Sophie Duck
•Thanks, that makes sense. I'd rather get payments faster.

Someone mentioned Claimyr earlier - I actually tried it last week when I couldn't get through to ESD about my pending claim. It really does work, they called me back when they got an agent on the line instead of me sitting on hold for hours. Pretty genius actually.
0 coins
Austin Leonard
•How much does something like that cost?
0 coins

•They focus on the value of actually reaching someone rather than the cost. For me it was worth it to finally get my adjudication issue resolved.

Just want to emphasize again how important it is to file online as soon as possible. Benefits are calculated based on when you file, not when you lost your job. Don't wait thinking you need perfect documentation.
