How to file for unemployment online - Washington ESD website confusion
I'm trying to figure out how to file for unemployment online through Washington ESD but their website is confusing me. I lost my job last week and need to get my claim started but I'm not sure if I should be using the SecureAccess Washington (SAW) portal or if there's a different site. When I go to esd.wa.gov it redirects me to different pages and I'm getting lost. Has anyone recently filed online and can walk me through the basic steps? I don't want to mess this up since I really need these benefits.

You'll want to start at esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' link. It will take you through SecureAccess Washington where you'll create an account if you don't have one. The application itself takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your employment info ready.

•Do I need to have my previous employer's info like their federal ID number or just basic details?

•You'll need their business name, address, and your dates of employment. The system might ask for their federal EIN but it's not always required if you have the other details.

Make sure you have your Social Security card, driver's license, and pay stubs from your last employer before you start. The system will ask for all that info and if you don't have it ready you might get kicked out and have to start over.

•Good point, I'll gather all that stuff first. How long does it usually take to get approved?

•If everything goes smoothly, about 1-2 weeks. But if there are any issues with your application it could go into adjudication and take much longer.

I just went through this process last month and it was actually pretty straightforward once I found the right starting point. Go to secure.esd.wa.gov directly - that's the main portal for filing. You'll create your SecureAccess Washington account first, then you can access the unemployment application. One tip: if you get stuck or have questions during the process, I found a service called Claimyr that helps people get through to Washington ESD phone agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Thanks for the direct link! What kind of questions did they ask during the application?
0 coins
Evelyn Rivera
•Mostly about your work history for the last 18 months, reason for job separation, and whether you're able and available to work. They also ask about any severance pay or vacation payout you might have received.

•What's Claimyr? Never heard of that before.

•It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents when you need to call them. I used it when I had questions about my claim status and it actually worked - got connected to a real person instead of being on hold forever.

ugh the washington esd website is THE WORST. i spent like 2 hours trying to figure out where to apply and kept getting error messages. finally got it submitted but then it said my claim was under review for weeks

Lilah Brooks
•What kind of review? Should I be worried about that happening to me?

•they called it adjudication - basically they had to verify some info with my employer. took like a month to clear up

•Adjudication happens when there are questions about your eligibility or job separation. It's not necessarily bad but it does delay your payments while they investigate.

Pro tip: file your claim as early in the week as possible, preferably Sunday or Monday. The system gets overloaded later in the week and you might experience timeouts or crashes.

•Good to know! Is there a best time of day too?

•Early morning or late evening tend to work better - avoid peak business hours when everyone's trying to access the system.

I'm confused about something - do I need to register with WorkSource Washington before I file my claim or can I do that after?

Jackson Carter
•You can file your unemployment claim first, but you'll need to register with WorkSource within a certain timeframe to meet the job search requirements. I think it's within your first few weeks of claiming.

•OK thanks, I wasn't sure about the order of things.

Does anyone know if you can save your application partway through? I started it yesterday but didn't have all my employer information and had to close the browser.

Jackson Carter
•I don't think the system saves partial applications. You'll probably need to start over, which is why it's important to have everything ready before you begin.

•Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for letting me know.

Just a heads up - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't forget about that part because I've seen people miss weeks and lose out on payments.

•When do the weekly claims start? Right after I file the initial application?

Yara Campbell
•Usually you'll get instructions about when to file your first weekly claim after your initial application is processed. It's typically the week after your waiting period.

•What's the waiting period?

Yara Campbell
•It's the first week of your claim where you don't get paid benefits, but you still need to file the weekly claim to establish your eligibility.

I filed mine online last year and the hardest part was remembering all my previous jobs from the last 18 months. Make sure you have exact dates and employer addresses because they're pretty picky about that stuff.

Lilah Brooks
•What if I don't remember the exact start date at a job? Will they reject my application?

Maya Diaz
•Try to get as close as possible - they understand people don't always remember exact dates. If it's way off they might contact your employer to verify, but small discrepancies usually aren't a big deal.

Anyone else having trouble with the SecureAccess Washington login? I created an account but it keeps saying my password is wrong even though I know it's right.

•Try clearing your browser cache and cookies, then attempt to log in again. SAW can be finicky with stored login data.

•I'll try that, thanks!

Does the online application ask about your reason for leaving your job? I'm worried they won't approve me because I quit, but it was because of unsafe working conditions.
0 coins
Jackson Carter
•Yes, they ask about job separation. Quitting for unsafe working conditions can still qualify you for benefits if you can document the situation. You might need to provide evidence during the application process.

•OK good, I have some emails about the safety issues I reported to my supervisor.

The whole process is such a pain honestly. I tried calling Washington ESD to ask questions before filing but could never get through to anyone. Spent hours on hold just to get hung up on. Finally found this thing called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. Worth checking out if you run into issues - their website is claimyr.com.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true that they can actually get you through to Washington ESD.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They have some system that gets you in the callback queue automatically instead of having to sit on hold. Saved me so much frustration.

Question - if I worked in another state before moving to Washington, do I need to include that employment in my application?
0 coins
Jackson Carter
•Yes, include all employment from the last 18 months regardless of which state it was in. Washington ESD needs the complete picture of your work history to calculate your benefits.

•Good to know, I wasn't sure if they only cared about Washington jobs.

Make sure you keep a copy of everything you submit! I had to appeal a decision later and needed to reference what I originally put in my application. Screenshot or print the confirmation page too.

Lilah Brooks
•Smart advice, I wouldn't have thought of that. Did your appeal go OK?

•Yeah eventually, but it took a while. Having my original application info made it much easier to argue my case.

Is there a mobile app for filing claims or do you have to use the website?
0 coins
Jackson Carter
•No official Washington ESD mobile app as far as I know. You'll need to use the website, but it should work on mobile browsers if you need to access it from your phone.

Ruby Knight
•OK thanks, just wanted to check since everything has apps these days.

Word of warning - don't file if you're not actually unemployed yet. I made that mistake and filed a few days before my last day of work and it created all sorts of complications with my claim dates.
0 coins
Lilah Brooks
•Oh wow, I hadn't thought about that timing issue. My last day was Friday so I should be good to file now.

Diego Castillo
•Yeah you should be fine then. Just make sure your claim start date reflects when you actually became unemployed.

Has anyone tried using Claimyr for getting help with the application itself, or is it just for calling Washington ESD later?
0 coins
Evelyn Rivera
•I used it mainly for calling about my claim status after I filed, but I think they can help you get connected to agents for questions about the application process too. The agents can walk you through it if you get stuck.

•That's helpful to know. I might try that if I run into issues.

Just wanted to follow up and say I successfully filed my claim online yesterday using everyone's advice here! The process took about 40 minutes once I had all my info together. Thanks for all the help!

•That's great to hear! Any final tips for someone about to start the process?

•Just be patient with the website - it's not the most user-friendly but it works. And definitely have all your employment info organized before you start.

•Glad it worked out for you! Make sure to set a reminder for your weekly claims so you don't miss any.
