How to file my weekly unemployment claim online - Washington ESD system confusing
I'm trying to figure out how to file my weekly unemployment claim online through the Washington ESD website but I'm getting lost in all the different portals and login screens. I have my SecureAccess Washington account set up but when I try to access the weekly claim filing section it keeps redirecting me to different pages. Is there a direct link or specific steps I should follow? I don't want to mess up my claim by filing incorrectly.

You need to log into your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first, then look for the 'eServices' section. From there you should see 'File Weekly Claim' as an option. Make sure you're filing for the correct week - it should show the week ending date.

•Thanks! I see the eServices section now. Do I need to file every single week even if I didn't work at all?

•Yes, you must file every week to maintain your claim, even if you didn't work. Just answer 'no' to the work questions but still submit the weekly claim.

The system is definitely confusing at first. I had the same problem when I started filing. Make sure you're going to secure.esd.wa.gov and not some other random site that might come up in Google searches.

•Good point about the URL - I want to make sure I'm on the official Washington ESD site.

•Yeah there's fake unemployment sites out there trying to steal your info, always double check the URL

If you're having trouble getting through to file your weekly claim, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helps you actually reach Washington ESD agents by phone when you need assistance. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helpful when you're stuck and can't figure out the online system.

•Interesting, I've been trying to call Washington ESD but always get busy signals or get disconnected. How does this work exactly?

Jasmine Hernandez
•It basically keeps calling for you and connects you when an agent becomes available. Saves you from sitting on hold for hours or getting hung up on.

•That actually sounds useful, the phone system at Washington ESD is terrible. I've wasted so many hours trying to get through.

For weekly claims, you typically have from Sunday through Saturday night to file for the previous week. Don't wait until the last minute though - the system sometimes goes down for maintenance on weekends.

•What happens if I file late? Will my claim get denied?

Ellie Kim
•You might get a warning or have to explain why you filed late, but usually they'll still process it if it's just a day or two. Don't make it a habit though.

•Right?? The whole system feels like it was designed in 1995 and never updated.

•At least I'm not the only one who finds it confusing!

One important thing - make sure you answer all the questions accurately about any work you did, even if it was just a few hours. Washington ESD will eventually find out about unreported income and you could face an overpayment situation.

•How do they find out about unreported work? I did some gig work last week and wasn't sure if I needed to report it.
0 coins
Kristian Bishop
•They cross-reference with tax records and employer reports. Always report any income, even cash payments or gig work. It's better to be honest and possibly get reduced benefits than face an overpayment later.

•This is so important - I know someone who had to pay back thousands because they didn't report some side work properly.

when i file my weekly claim it always asks about job search activities. do i really need to log every single application i submit?
0 coins
Ellie Kim
•Yes, Washington ESD requires you to keep a detailed job search log. You need to show you're making at least 3 job search activities per week. Keep records of applications, networking contacts, job fairs, etc.

Axel Far
•ok thanks, i wasnt sure how detailed to be with that part

Just a reminder that if anyone is struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone for questions about their weekly claims, Claimyr has been a lifesaver for me. The automated callback system actually works and I've been able to speak with agents multiple times when I couldn't get through on my own.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to reach our own state unemployment office.

•I hear you on that frustration, but honestly it's worth it when you consider how much time you save not sitting on hold. The peace of mind of actually being able to talk to someone when you have questions is valuable.

For what it's worth, I've found that the mobile version of the Washington ESD site sometimes works better than the desktop version for filing weekly claims. Not sure why but it seems to load faster and have fewer glitches.

Eva St. Cyr
•Really? I'll try that next time. The desktop version has been really slow for me.

Fiona Sand
•yeah the mobile site is definitely less buggy in my experience too

Make sure you print or screenshot your confirmation page after you submit your weekly claim. I've had issues where the system said my claim wasn't filed even though I completed everything.

Eva St. Cyr
•Good tip! I'll make sure to save proof that I filed.

Ellie Kim
•Yes, always keep records. The confirmation number is especially important if you need to prove you filed on time.

One thing that tripped me up initially - make sure you're filing for the right week. The system shows the week ending date, so if today is Wednesday you'd be filing for last week's Sunday through Saturday period, not the current week.
0 coins
Eva St. Cyr
•That's confusing! So I'm always filing for the week that just ended, not the current week?
0 coins
Kaitlyn Otto
•Exactly! You file for completed weeks, not the week you're currently in.

has anyone else noticed that the system seems to go down a lot on sundays? ive had trouble filing multiple times on sunday nights

Ellie Kim
•Yes, they do maintenance on weekends sometimes. That's why I always try to file by Friday if possible.

If you're having persistent technical issues with the online system, Washington ESD does have a phone option for filing weekly claims, though it's automated. The number is on their website. However, getting through can be challenging due to high call volumes.

•I've tried calling before but could never get through. Maybe I should look into that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier.

•I used Claimyr last month when I had adjudication issues and it definitely helped me get connected to an actual person at Washington ESD. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

question about the work search thing - if i apply to the same company for different positions does that count as multiple job search activities?
0 coins
Ellie Kim
•Each separate application counts as one activity, even if it's the same company. But make sure they're actually different positions, not just resubmitting the same application.

Axel Far
•ok good to know, i applied for 3 different jobs at amazon so those should all count

pro tip: if you always file on the same day each week it becomes routine and youre less likely to forget. i do mine every tuesday morning with my coffee

Does Washington ESD send confirmation emails after you file your weekly claim? I never seem to get any confirmation that it went through.
0 coins
Kristian Bishop
•They should send a confirmation email to the address on file. Check your spam folder, and make sure your email address is correct in your SAW account.

Alina Rosenthal
•I'll check my spam folder, thanks. I was worried my claims weren't going through properly.

Anyone know what happens if you accidentally file twice for the same week? I think I might have double-submitted last week because the page froze.
0 coins
Ellie Kim
•The system usually catches duplicate filings and will only process one. You might get a message about it, but it shouldn't affect your benefits.

Luis Johnson
•Ok that's reassuring, I was worried I messed something up.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr recommendation - I ended up using it again this week when I had a question about my job search requirements and was able to speak with a Washington ESD representative within about 30 minutes. Much better than the hours I used to spend trying to get through on my own.

•I've been hesitant to try services like that but if it actually works it might be worth it. The regular phone system is basically unusable.

Thanks everyone for all the help! I was able to successfully file my weekly claim using the steps you all provided. The eServices section was exactly where I needed to go. I'll definitely set up a weekly reminder so I don't forget to file on time.
