How to file a weekly claim for unemployment - Washington ESD system confusing me
I just got approved for unemployment benefits last week and now I need to file my first weekly claim but I'm completely lost. The Washington ESD website has so many different sections and I can't figure out where exactly I'm supposed to go to submit my weekly claim. I found the SecureAccess Washington login but then there are like 5 different options once I get in. Which one is for filing weekly claims? Also do I need to report job search activities right away or can I wait until I actually start looking? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and lose my benefits.

Once you log into SecureAccess Washington, look for the section that says 'File Weekly Claim' or 'Claim Status'. It should be pretty obvious on the main page after you log in. You'll need to answer questions about your availability to work, any earnings from that week, and job search activities. For job search, you need to do at least 3 job search activities per week starting immediately unless you're on standby status.

•Thank you! I see the File Weekly Claim button now. Do I need to keep track of my job searches somewhere specific or just remember what I did?

•You should keep a detailed job search log. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities at any time, so document everything - company names, dates, positions applied for, etc.

The weekly claim filing window is usually Sunday through Saturday for the previous week. Make sure you file during the right time period or you might miss your chance to claim that week's benefits.

•Wait, so I can only file on certain days? What happens if I miss the window?

•You have from Sunday morning until Saturday night to file for the previous week. If you miss it, you might be able to file a late claim but it's more complicated.

I've been dealing with this same confusion! The Washington ESD system is not user-friendly at all. I spent 2 hours trying to figure out how to file my first weekly claim. What helped me was calling the customer service line, but good luck getting through - I tried calling like 50 times before someone picked up.

•Oh god 50 times?? I've been trying to call all morning and keep getting that stupid busy signal or getting hung up on.

•If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get connected to unemployment agents. They have this demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you.

weekly claims are due every week on the same day you first filed. so if you filed on a tuesday, you need to file every tuesday. make sure you answer all the questions honestly especially about looking for work

•That's not quite right. Weekly claims can be filed any day during the filing period (Sunday-Saturday) for the previous week. It doesn't have to be the same day you originally filed.

•oh really? i thought it had to be the same day. thanks for correcting me

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!! I've been unemployed for 6 months and filing weekly claims is still a nightmare every single week. The website crashes constantly, the questions are confusing, and if you make ONE tiny mistake they act like you're trying to commit fraud. This whole system needs to be completely rebuilt.

•I feel your frustration but it's really not that bad once you get used to it. Just take your time and read each question carefully.

•Easy for you to say! When you're stressed about paying rent and the website keeps timing out it's infuriating.

•I had the same experience with the website crashing. That's actually why I ended up trying that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. It was so much easier than dealing with busy signals and website crashes.

Here's a step by step for filing weekly claims: 1) Log into SecureAccess Washington 2) Click 'File Weekly Claim' 3) Answer questions about your availability 4) Report any work or earnings 5) List your job search activities 6) Submit before Saturday night. The key things Washington ESD looks for are that you're available to work, actively seeking employment, and reporting everything accurately.

•This is super helpful! What counts as a valid job search activity? Does applying online count?
0 coins
Bruno Simmons
•Yes, online applications count. You can also do things like attend job fairs, networking events, or even register with temp agencies. Just make sure you keep detailed records.

Make sure you're not working more than part-time hours while claiming. If you work more than 32 hours in a week or earn too much, it can affect your benefits. Washington ESD is pretty strict about this stuff.

•What's considered 'too much' earnings? I might pick up some freelance work.

Aileen Rodriguez
•It depends on your weekly benefit amount. Generally if you earn more than your weekly benefit amount minus $5, you won't get any unemployment for that week.

i remember being so confused about this too when i first started filing. the worst part is if you miss filing a weekly claim you basically lose that week's money forever. learned that the hard way when i went on vacation and forgot to file.

•Wait really? You can't go back and file for previous weeks?

•you can try to do a late claim but its complicated and not guaranteed. better to just set reminders on your phone

The job search requirement is 3 activities per week minimum. This includes applying for jobs, attending interviews, going to WorkSource events, or doing career counseling. Washington ESD randomly audits people so keep everything documented - dates, company names, contact info, etc.

•Do I need to use WorkSource or can I just apply to jobs on my own?

Alejandro Castro
•You can do job searches anywhere - Indeed, company websites, WorkSource, etc. You're not required to use WorkSource specifically but they do have good resources.

Pro tip: file your weekly claim on Sunday or Monday if possible. Later in the week the system gets overloaded and you might have trouble accessing it. I learned this after missing a claim because the website was down on Saturday night.

•Good advice! I always file mine on Sunday morning while drinking coffee. It's become part of my routine now.

•Thanks! I'll definitely file early in the week to avoid any technical issues.

If you're having trouble with the weekly claim process, you might want to check if you qualify for any workshops through WorkSource. They have sessions specifically about navigating the unemployment system and job search requirements.

Nolan Carter
•That sounds helpful. Are these workshops free?

Lia Quinn
•Yes, all WorkSource services are free. You can find workshops in your area on their website or by calling your local office.

Just wanted to add that if you're on standby status with your employer, the job search requirements might be different. You should check with Washington ESD to see what applies to your specific situation.

Asher Levin
•What's standby status? I've never heard of that.
0 coins
Haley Stokes
•Standby is when your employer expects to call you back to work within a certain timeframe. If you're on standby, you might not need to do the full job search requirements.

The most important thing is to be completely honest on your weekly claims. Don't try to hide income or work hours. Washington ESD cross-references with employers and tax records, so they'll find out eventually and then you'll owe overpayments plus penalties.

Nolan Carter
•That's scary. What kind of penalties are we talking about?
0 coins
Serene Snow
•Depends on whether they think it was intentional fraud or just a mistake. Could be anywhere from having to pay back benefits to being disqualified from future claims.

I wish someone had told me when I started that you need to keep filing weekly claims even if your payment is delayed or under review. I stopped filing when my claim went into adjudication and missed out on weeks of benefits.
0 coins
Nolan Carter
•Oh no! So even if I'm not getting paid I still need to file weekly?
0 coins
Issac Nightingale
•Yes! Keep filing even during adjudication or appeals. If your claim gets approved they'll backpay you for the weeks you filed, but they won't pay for weeks you didn't file.

One thing that helped me was setting up automatic reminders on my phone for filing day. I set three reminders - Sunday morning, Wednesday afternoon, and Friday evening as backup. This way I never forget to file my weekly claim.

•Smart idea! I'm going to do the same thing. Better safe than sorry.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD for questions about weekly claims, I had success with that Claimyr service. They basically call on your behalf and get you connected to an actual person. Saved me hours of busy signals and frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like it might be expensive.
0 coins
Justin Trejo
•It's definitely worth it when you're spending entire days trying to get through. Much cheaper than losing benefits because you can't get answers to your questions.

Nolan Carter
•I might try that if I run into issues. Thanks for mentioning it!

Just remember that each weekly claim covers the previous week, not the current week. So if you're filing on Sunday the 15th, you're claiming benefits for the week ending Saturday the 14th. This confused me for the first few weeks.

Nolan Carter
•Thanks for clarifying that! I probably would have gotten confused about which week I was filing for.

•I made that mistake and reported the wrong work hours. Had to call Washington ESD to fix it, which took forever to get through.

The weekly claim questions are pretty straightforward once you get used to them: Were you available for work? Did you look for work? Did you work or earn any money? Did you refuse any job offers? Just answer honestly and you'll be fine.

Nolan Carter
•That doesn't sound too complicated. I was worried it would be really difficult.

Freya Ross
•It's not difficult, just tedious having to do it every single week. But it becomes routine after a while.

If you ever need to change information on a weekly claim you already submitted, you can't edit it online. You have to call Washington ESD to make corrections, which is why it's important to double-check everything before hitting submit.

Nolan Carter
•Good to know! I'll definitely review everything carefully before submitting.

Sergio Neal
•And calling to make corrections is a nightmare because you can never get through to anyone. That's actually how I found out about Claimyr - spent three days trying to reach someone at Washington ESD.

I went through this same confusion when I first started filing! One thing that really helped me was printing out the weekly claim confirmation page each time I submitted. That way I had a record of exactly what I reported and when I filed. Also, if you're ever unsure about how to answer a specific question, there are usually little help icons next to each question that explain what they're looking for. Don't rush through it - take your time to read everything carefully since you can't edit once you submit.
