How to claim weekly unemployment benefits - Washington ESD process?
I just got approved for unemployment after waiting 6 weeks for adjudication and I'm totally confused about the weekly claim process. The Washington ESD website says I need to file every week but I can't figure out exactly how to do it. Do I use the same SecureAccess Washington login? When do I need to file by? I'm scared I'll mess something up and lose my benefits. Can someone walk me through the steps for claiming weekly unemployment benefits?

Yes, you use the same SAW login. Go to esd.wa.gov and click 'File Weekly Claim' on the main page. You'll need to answer questions about any work you did that week, wages earned, and if you were available for work. The deadline is usually Saturday night but I always file by Friday to be safe.

•Thank you! Do I need to report job search activities when I file weekly or is that separate?

Louisa Ramirez
•Job search reporting is separate - you maintain your own log and only submit it if Washington ESD requests it during an audit.

The weekly claim is pretty straightforward once you do it a few times. Just answer honestly about any work or income. Even if you worked one day, report it - they'll adjust your benefit amount accordingly. Don't try to hide anything because they cross-check with employers.

•What if I forget to file one week? Can I still file the next week?

•You can file up to 4 weeks late but you won't get paid for weeks you don't file. So don't skip weeks thinking you can catch up later.

I had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I had questions about my weekly claims. Kept getting busy signals and disconnected calls. Finally used Claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent. They have this system that calls you back when an agent is available instead of waiting on hold forever. Really helpful when you need to clarify something about your claim status.

•Never heard of that service. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Way better than spending hours trying to get through on the phone.

Make sure you're filing for the correct week! The system shows the week ending date, not the week starting date. I screwed this up my first time and filed for the wrong week. Had to call and straighten it out.

•Oh wow I didn't think about that. So if it says 'Week ending January 18' that means I'm filing for January 12-18?
0 coins
Harold Oh
•Exactly! The week runs Sunday through Saturday, so week ending 1/18 covers 1/12 through 1/18.

•It's actually not that bad once you get used to it. The questions are the same every week so it becomes routine.

•maybe for you but im still confused about the job search thing and what counts as work

Another question - if I do gig work like DoorDash for a few hours, do I need to report that as work? It's not very much money but I don't want to get in trouble.

TommyKapitz
•Yes, you need to report ALL income including gig work. Even if it's just $20, report it. Washington ESD will reduce your weekly benefit but you'll still get something.

•I learned this the hard way. Got an overpayment notice for not reporting Uber earnings. Just be honest about everything.

The weekly claim questions are pretty standard. They ask if you were able and available for work, if you looked for work, if you worked or earned money, if you refused any job offers, stuff like that. Takes maybe 5 minutes if you have your info ready.

Marilyn Dixon
•What do they mean by 'able and available'? Like physically able to work?
0 coins
Gael Robinson
•It means you're ready and willing to accept suitable work if offered. So if you're sick or on vacation, you might not be considered available.

I've been filing weekly claims for 3 months now and it's become second nature. The key is to set a reminder for yourself - I file every Wednesday morning with my coffee. Don't wait until the last minute because the system sometimes has issues on weekends.

Marilyn Dixon
•That's a good idea about setting a routine. Do you get paid the same week you file or does it take a few days?
0 coins
Payton Black
•Usually takes 2-3 business days after filing. If you file Wednesday, you'll typically see the deposit by Friday or Monday.

One thing that confused me at first - you can't file your weekly claim until the week is over. So for the week ending Saturday January 18th, you can't file until after midnight on Saturday night. I kept trying to file on Friday and getting error messages.

•Yeah that's annoying. Most people want to get it done on Friday before the weekend but you have to wait.

Edward McBride
•Right? But I guess it makes sense since they need to know about the full week including Saturday work.

Pro tip: screenshot your confirmation page after filing. I had an issue once where Washington ESD claimed I didn't file a week and having that screenshot saved me from losing benefits.

•Good thinking! I'll start doing that. Better safe than sorry with these government systems.

•I do the same thing. Government websites are notorious for glitches so documentation is key.

Does anyone know what happens if you miss filing for like 2 weeks? I was in the hospital and completely forgot about my weekly claims.

TommyKapitz
•You can still file late but you won't get paid for the weeks you missed. You might be able to get those weeks restored if you had good cause - being hospitalized would probably qualify.

Angel Campbell
•Definitely call Washington ESD about that. Medical reasons are usually considered good cause for missing deadlines. I'd use Claimyr to get through to someone who can help restore those weeks.

The questions about job search are confusing. Do I need to apply for jobs every single week? What if there aren't any suitable jobs posted?
0 coins
Louisa Ramirez
•You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week. This includes applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, or improving your skills. Keep a detailed log.

Rita Jacobs
•Ok so it's not just applications. That makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying!

I always file mine on Sunday morning right after the week ends. Get it done early and don't have to worry about forgetting. Plus the system is usually less busy on Sunday mornings.

•That's smart. I tried filing on a Saturday night once and the site was so slow it timed out.

•Yeah weekends can be rough. Early Sunday or Monday morning is usually best.

Make sure you understand what counts as 'suitable work' for your claim. They can't force you to take a job that pays way less than your previous work or is outside your skill set, but the standards get looser the longer you're on unemployment.

Marilyn Dixon
•How do they determine what's suitable? I'm worried they'll expect me to take any minimum wage job.
0 coins
Naila Gordon
•Initially it's based on your previous work experience and wage. After several weeks, they'll consider jobs at 75% of your previous wage as suitable.

The most important thing is to be consistent and honest. File every week, report all income, keep good records. I've been doing this for months with no issues by just following the rules.

Marilyn Dixon
•That's reassuring. I was so worried about messing something up but it sounds manageable if I just stay organized.

Cynthia Love
•Exactly. It's really not that complicated once you get into the routine. Just don't overthink it.

If you ever have issues with your weekly claim not going through or getting error messages, try using a different browser or clearing your cache. The Washington ESD website can be finicky sometimes.

•Good advice. I had to switch from Chrome to Firefox to get it working properly.

Darren Brooks
•Yeah the site definitely works better on some browsers than others. Government web design at its finest!

One more tip - if you're working part-time while on unemployment, you can usually earn up to a certain amount before it affects your benefits. Check your benefit calculation to see what that threshold is for your claim.

Marilyn Dixon
•That's good to know! I might pick up some freelance work but wasn't sure how it would affect my benefits.

•Just make sure to report it all honestly. They'll do the math and adjust your weekly benefit accordingly.

I wish Washington ESD would send email reminders about filing weekly claims. It's easy to forget when you're dealing with job hunting stress and everything else.

•You can set up your own phone reminder or calendar alert. That's what I do - every Wednesday at 9am.

•Smart idea. I'll set that up right now so I don't forget next week.

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD with questions about weekly claims or anything else, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through on the phone. The callback system actually works and you get to talk to real agents who can answer your questions properly.

Just wanted to add that you should also keep track of your weekly benefit amount and make sure it's consistent from week to week. If you notice any sudden changes in your payment amount, that could indicate an issue with how you answered the weekly questions or a problem with your claim that needs attention. I caught an error once where they were deducting taxes differently than expected, and addressing it early saved me from a bigger headache later. Also, make sure your direct deposit information is correct in your account - nothing worse than filing on time but having payment issues because of outdated banking info!

•This is really valuable advice! I hadn't thought about monitoring the payment amounts week to week. How quickly did Washington ESD fix the tax deduction issue when you contacted them about it?
