How do I claim weekly unemployment benefits in Washington ESD system?
I just got approved for unemployment after waiting 6 weeks for adjudication and I'm confused about the weekly claim process. I know I need to file every week but I'm not sure exactly how to do it or what information I need to have ready. Do I file online through the Washington ESD website? What questions do they ask? I'm worried about messing something up after waiting so long to get approved.

You file your weekly claims online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. Log into your account and look for the 'file weekly claim' option. You'll need to answer questions about any work you did that week, any income you received, and whether you were available and actively looking for work.

•Thank you! Do I need to file every single week even if nothing changes?

•Yes, you must file every week to keep receiving benefits, even if your situation is exactly the same.

The system asks pretty standard questions each week - did you work, how many hours, how much did you earn, were you able and available for work, did you look for work. Make sure you report ALL income including odd jobs or freelance work.

•What counts as 'looking for work'? Do I need to apply to a certain number of jobs?

•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. This can include applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, or attending job fairs.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your weekly claims, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, I didn't know there were services like that. How does it work exactly?

•Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent becomes available. Really helpful when you have specific questions about your claim.

•Oh no! What day of the week do I need to file by?

•You can file your weekly claim starting Sunday for the previous week. The deadline is usually Saturday night, but don't wait that long - file as early as possible.

The Washington ESD website walks you through it step by step. Just make sure you have your Social Security number ready and know your work history for the week. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.

•Do I need any other documents or just my SSN?

Sara Unger
•Just your SSN and the information about any work or income from that week. If you worked, you'll need to know the employer name and how much you earned.

One thing to watch out for - if you refuse a job offer or quit a job during the week, you need to report that too. Washington ESD takes that stuff seriously and it could affect your benefits.

•Good to know. What if I get offered a job that pays way less than my previous job?

•You generally can't refuse suitable work, but there are some exceptions. If it's significantly lower pay or outside your field, you might be able to refuse, but it's risky.

I've been filing weekly claims for 8 months now and it becomes routine. The questions are always the same. Just be honest about everything - they cross-reference with employer records anyway.

•How long does it take to get paid after filing?

•Usually 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim, the money shows up in your account or on your debit card.

Don't forget about WorkSource! You might need to register there for job search activities. Washington ESD sometimes requires it depending on your situation.

•Is WorkSource the same as Washington ESD?

Leslie Parker
•No, WorkSource is the job search assistance program. Washington ESD handles the unemployment benefits. They work together but they're separate systems.

Been there! The first few weeks are confusing but you'll get the hang of it. Just remember to file every week even if you think you might not qualify for that week - let Washington ESD decide.

•That's good advice. Better safe than sorry I guess.

If you work part-time during a week, you can still get partial benefits. Washington ESD will calculate how much you get based on your earnings. Don't think working a few hours means you can't file a claim.

•That's really helpful! I was worried about taking temporary work.

Savanna Franklin
•Yeah, they encourage you to work! Just report all your hours and earnings accurately.

Actually, I should mention - when I had questions about partial benefits and how they calculate everything, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really helped me get through to someone who could explain it properly. Much better than trying to figure it out from the website alone.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I don't remember the exact amount, but it was worth it to actually talk to a real person who could answer my specific questions about my claim.

The Washington ESD mobile app is pretty user-friendly too if you prefer filing on your phone. Same questions, just easier to navigate sometimes.

•I didn't know there was an app! What's it called?

Amy Fleming
•It's just called Washington ESD. You can download it from the app store and use the same login as the website.

Keep records of everything! Save screenshots of your weekly claim confirmations. I had a payment issue once and having those records helped resolve it faster.

•Great tip! I'll make sure to screenshot everything.

•Also keep your job search log updated. They can audit you at any time and ask to see it.

If you get confused about any of the questions, there's usually a help icon next to each one that explains what they're asking for. Don't just guess - read the explanations.

One more thing - if you move during your claim period, make sure to update your address immediately. Washington ESD needs current contact info and it can delay payments if they can't reach you.

•I'm actually planning to move next month, so I'll remember that.

•You can update your address online in your account settings. Just don't wait to do it.

The whole process seems overwhelming at first but it really isn't once you do it a few times. Just be accurate with your answers and file on time every week.

Yeah, and don't stress too much about minor mistakes. If you accidentally put the wrong number of hours or something, you can usually call and get it corrected. The important thing is filing consistently.

•That's reassuring. I was worried about making a mistake and losing my benefits.

Last tip - set a reminder on your phone to file every week. Make it a routine, like Sunday morning with coffee. Consistency is key with unemployment benefits.

•Perfect! I'll set up a weekly reminder right now.

Just to follow up on the Claimyr thing - I know some people are skeptical about using third-party services, but when you're dealing with something as important as your unemployment benefits, sometimes it's worth it to get expert help. The peace of mind alone was valuable to me.
