When do I file my weekly unemployment claim with Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment after waiting forever for adjudication to finish. Now I'm confused about when exactly I'm supposed to file my weekly claims. The Washington ESD website says something about filing during your designated week but I can't figure out what my week is supposed to be. Do I file right after the week ends or before? And what happens if I miss the deadline? I really don't want to mess this up after waiting so long to get approved.

You file your weekly claim for the week that just ended. So if you're filing on Sunday, you're filing for the week that ended Saturday. Washington ESD assigns you a specific day of the week to file based on your last name. Check your account dashboard - it should show your designated filing day.

•Thanks! I found it - my day is Tuesday. So I file every Tuesday for the previous week that ended Monday?

Sienna Gomez
•Exactly! And you have until 11:59 PM on your designated day to file without it being considered late.

•This is so true! I missed filing once and spent 3 days trying to get through on the phone.

•Actually I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I had filing issues. They have this demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made it way easier than sitting on hold for hours.

The filing schedule is based on the first letter of your last name. A-H files on Sunday, I-Q files on Monday, R-Z files on Tuesday. You can file starting at 6 AM on your designated day for the week that just ended. Make sure you answer all the questions accurately about any work you did or money you earned that week.

•Perfect, that explains why mine is Tuesday. What if I worked a few hours during the week? Do I still file?

Anderson Prospero
•Yes, absolutely file! Just report the hours you worked and gross earnings. Washington ESD will calculate if you still qualify for partial benefits that week.

•Be super careful about reporting earnings correctly. I made a mistake once and ended up with an overpayment notice months later.

Why is this so confusing?? Other states just let you file whenever during the week. Washington ESD makes everything unnecessarily complicated with these assigned days.

•The assigned days help spread out the server load so the system doesn't crash when everyone tries to file at once.

•I guess that makes sense but it's still annoying when you forget what day you're supposed to file

One thing to remember - you have to file every single week even if you didn't look for work that week (unless you're on standby status). Missing even one weekly claim can mess up your whole claim.

Daryl Bright
•What's standby status? Is that different from regular unemployment?
0 coins
Abigail bergen
•Standby is when your employer temporarily laid you off but expects to call you back within a specific timeframe. You don't have to do job searches but you still file weekly claims.

protip: you can file up to 1 week late without penalty but after that you need a good reason or they might deny those weeks

•That's correct. If you file more than 7 days late, Washington ESD requires you to explain why and they decide whether to accept the late filing.

The mobile app makes filing pretty easy once you remember your schedule. Just answer the 4-5 questions about work, job search, and availability. Takes like 2 minutes unless you have earnings to report.

•There's a mobile app? I've been using the website this whole time

•Yeah it's just called Washington ESD. Same questions as the website but sometimes faster.

I've been filing unemployment for 8 weeks now and still get nervous every time lol. Always worried I'm going to click the wrong thing and mess up my claim

•I totally get that anxiety! The questions are pretty straightforward though. Just read them carefully.

•Same here! I screenshot my confirmation page every week just in case.

For job search requirements, remember you need 3 job search activities per week unless you're exempt. Keep good records because Washington ESD can audit your job search log at any time.

Daryl Bright
•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs or other things too?
0 coins
Sienna Gomez
•Applying for jobs, networking events, job fairs, interviews, creating profiles on job sites, career counseling sessions. There's a full list on the Washington ESD website.

Does anyone know what happens if the website is down on your filing day? This happened to me once last month

•If the system is down due to technical issues on Washington ESD's end, they usually extend the filing deadline. Keep trying throughout your designated day.

•When that happened to me I used Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD to report the issue. They noted it on my account so I wouldn't get penalized for late filing.

Quick question - if I start a new job in the middle of a week, do I still file a claim for that week?
0 coins
Sienna Gomez
•Yes, file for that week and report any earnings from the days you worked. You might still qualify for partial benefits depending on how much you earned.

•Got it, thanks! Better to file and let them calculate it than to skip filing altogether.

The thing that confuses me is the difference between the week I'm filing for and the week I'm filing in. Like if I file on Tuesday, am I filing for the week that ended Monday or the week that ended the previous Sunday?

Anderson Prospero
•You're filing for the week that ended the day before your filing day. So if you file on Tuesday, you're filing for the week that ended Monday (Sunday through Monday).

Sofía Rodríguez
•That makes sense now. So I'm always filing for the most recently completed week.

I wish Washington ESD would send email reminders about filing day. I have to rely on my phone calendar because I always forget

•That would be so helpful! I've gotten into the habit of filing first thing in the morning on my day so I don't forget.

What if you're traveling and can't file on your designated day? Can you file early or do you have to wait until you get back?
0 coins
Sienna Gomez
•You can't file early, but you can file late with an explanation. Travel isn't usually considered a valid reason for late filing unless it was an emergency, so try to file remotely if possible.

•Good to know. I'll make sure to plan ahead for any trips.

For anyone new to this - don't panic if you make a small mistake on your weekly claim. You can usually call Washington ESD to correct it, though good luck getting through on the phone.

•This is where Claimyr really helps. Instead of spending all day trying to reach Washington ESD, they can get you connected to an agent who can fix filing errors quickly.

•Never heard of that but sounds useful. I'll check it out if I need to call again.

Pro tip: screenshot your confirmation page after filing each week. I had a situation where Washington ESD said I didn't file but I had proof that I did.

•Smart idea! I'm definitely going to start doing this.

•Also save the confirmation email if you have email notifications turned on. Double backup never hurts.

The weekly filing questions are pretty much the same every week. Did you work? Did you look for work? Were you able and available? Any earnings? Gets pretty routine after a few weeks.

Daryl Bright
•That's reassuring. I was worried they would be different every week and I'd have to figure out new stuff.

One last thing - make sure your contact info is up to date in your Washington ESD account. If they need to reach you about your weekly claim and can't, it can cause delays in your payments.

•You're welcome! Just remember - file every week on your designated day for the week that just ended. You've got this!
