When do I file my weekly claim for unemployment - Washington ESD timing question
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and I'm confused about the timing for filing my weekly claims. Do I file it at the beginning of the week I'm claiming for, or at the end? I don't want to mess this up and cause delays with my payments. The Washington ESD website isn't super clear about this and I can't get through on the phone to ask anyone.

You file your weekly claim AFTER the week you're claiming for ends. So if you're claiming for the week of January 6-12, you would file that claim on or after January 13th. Most people file on Sunday or Monday for the previous week.

•Thank you! So I should wait until after each week is over before filing the claim for that week?

•Exactly! You can't file for a week that hasn't happened yet. Washington ESD needs to know what actually occurred during that week - whether you worked, looked for jobs, etc.

•Same here, Sunday has become my routine. I set a phone reminder so I don't forget.

•Good idea about the reminder! I'll probably do the same thing.

The official Washington ESD rule is that you can file your weekly claim starting the Sunday after the week you're claiming for ends. So for a benefit week that runs Sunday through Saturday, you can file the claim starting the following Sunday. Most people find it easier to establish a routine and file every Sunday.

•This makes sense now. So I should plan to file every Sunday for the previous week?

•Yes, that's the most common approach. Just make sure you don't file late - you only have a limited window to file each weekly claim.

Speaking of getting through on the phone, I had the same problem trying to reach Washington ESD. Someone on here mentioned claimyr.com which helps you get through to an actual agent. I tried it and it worked - got connected in about 20 minutes instead of calling for hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? I've been trying to call for days. How does that service work exactly?

Ava Harris
•Basically they handle all the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saved me so much frustration.

•I've never heard of this but might try it. The Washington ESD phone system is impossible.

WAIT you have to file every single week?? I thought once you got approved you just automatically got paid

Chloe Delgado
•No, you have to file a weekly claim every week to certify that you're still eligible for benefits. It's not automatic.

•oh great, another thing to worry about. what happens if i miss a week?

Rajiv Kumar
•If you miss filing a weekly claim, you won't get paid for that week. You might be able to file late but there are restrictions.

The timing used to confuse me too. I made the mistake early on of trying to file for the current week thinking I was being proactive. Got an error message that made me panic I'd broken something lol

•Ha! That's exactly what I was worried about doing. Good to know I'm not the only one confused by this.

•Yeah the system won't let you file early anyway, so don't stress about it too much.

I've been on unemployment for 6 months and I still sometimes forget which week I'm supposed to be filing for. The benefit week thing is confusing.

•same! especially around holidays when my brain is off

•The benefit week always runs Sunday to Saturday, which helps me keep track. So I know I'm always filing on Sunday for the Sunday-Saturday week that just ended.

Here's what I do - I have a calendar where I write down which week I'm filing for each Sunday. Week ending 1/12, week ending 1/19, etc. Keeps me organized.

Isabella Russo
•That's a really good system. I might copy that idea.

•It's saved me from filing the wrong week more than once!

The Washington ESD website should really make this clearer. It took me forever to figure out the timing when I first started claiming.

•RIGHT?? Everything about their website is confusing

•The information is there but it's buried in the FAQ section. They could definitely make it more prominent.

Just to add - make sure you're keeping track of your job search activities for each week too. Washington ESD requires you to document your job search efforts when you file your weekly claim.

•Good point! I need to start keeping better records of my job applications.

•Yeah, they can audit your job search log at any time. Better to have good documentation from the start.

I tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got through to Washington ESD in like 15 minutes when I'd been trying to call for literally 3 hours before. Definitely worth it if you need to talk to someone there.

•Right? It's crazy how much time it saves compared to calling normally.

Pro tip: Set up your online account on the Washington ESD website if you haven't already. Filing weekly claims online is way easier than trying to do it over the phone.

does anyone know what time on sunday the system opens up for filing? like is it midnight or later in the morning?

Chloe Delgado
•The system is usually available 24/7 for filing weekly claims, but I'd check the Washington ESD website for any scheduled maintenance windows.

I always file my weekly claim first thing Sunday morning with my coffee. Made it part of my routine so I never forget.

Isabella Russo
•I like that idea of making it part of a routine. Probably the best way to make sure I don't forget.

•Exactly! And it only takes a few minutes once you get used to the process.

This thread is super helpful! I was about to ask the same question. Glad I'm not the only one who found the timing confusing at first.

Isabella Russo
•Right? I feel like this should be explained better when you first get approved.

•Washington ESD could definitely improve their communication about the weekly filing process.

One more thing - if you're ever late filing a weekly claim, don't panic. You can usually still file it within a few days, but don't make it a habit.

Isabella Russo
•Good to know there's a little buffer in case something comes up.

Samantha Johnson
•Yeah, but it's better to just file on time every week to avoid any complications.

For anyone still reading this - I found that Washington ESD also sends email reminders about filing your weekly claim if you sign up for notifications.

•Oh that's perfect! I'll definitely sign up for those email reminders.

•Yeah, it's in your account settings. Just another way to make sure you don't miss a week.

Summary for anyone skimming: File your weekly claim AFTER the week ends, most people do it on Sunday for the previous Sunday-Saturday week. Set up reminders so you don't forget!
