When to file unemployment weekly claim - Washington ESD timing confusion

I'm totally confused about when I'm supposed to file my weekly unemployment claim with Washington ESD. I filed my initial claim last week and got approved, but now I'm not sure about the timing for weekly claims. Do I file every Sunday? Or is it based on when I first applied? I don't want to mess this up and lose my benefits. The Washington ESD website isn't super clear about the exact timing and I'm worried I'll file too early or too late.

You file your weekly claim starting the Sunday after your waiting week. So if your claim started on a Monday, you'd file your first weekly claim the Sunday after your waiting week ends. Then every Sunday after that. Make sure to file between Sunday and the following Saturday - don't wait until the last minute!

Thanks! So I should be filing this Sunday then since my claim started last Monday?

Exactly, as long as you've completed your waiting week. Check your account to see if it shows you can file a weekly claim.

I always file mine on Sunday mornings. Been doing UI claims for years and Sunday is the best day - the system is usually working fine then.

What time on Sunday do you usually file? I heard the system can be slow sometimes.

0 coins

Usually around 9am. Never had issues at that time. Avoid late Sunday nights though - sometimes it's down for maintenance.

You have to file every week to keep getting benefits, even if you worked some hours. The key thing is filing consistently - missing a week can mess up your whole claim. I learned this the hard way when I missed filing one week and had to call Washington ESD to fix it.

How long did it take to fix when you missed a week? I'm worried I might forget someday.

Took about 3 weeks to get it sorted out. Had to call multiple times. That's actually when I found out about Claimyr - they helped me get through to an agent faster. Check out claimyr.com if you need to reach Washington ESD by phone.

The timing is really important. You file for the week that just ended, not the current week. So when you file on Sunday, you're filing for the previous Sunday through Saturday. Don't get confused about which week you're reporting!

This is exactly what confused me at first! I thought I was filing for the upcoming week.

Yeah it's backwards from what you'd expect. Always remember you're reporting what already happened, not what's coming up.

omg yes the timing is so confusing!! I kept missing my weekly claims because I didn't understand when to file. Finally figured it out but man the Washington ESD system could be clearer about this

Right?? I feel like they could just send an email reminder or something

They do have text reminders you can sign up for. Look in your account settings.

Pro tip: Set a recurring reminder on your phone for every Sunday. I use Sunday at 8am so I don't forget. Also make sure you're reporting your job search activities correctly - Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

Good idea about the phone reminder. What counts as job search activities?

Applying for jobs, networking events, job interviews, career fairs, etc. Keep detailed records because they can audit your job search log.

I've been filing on Tuesdays and it works fine. As long as you file before the weekend deadline you should be okay.

0 coins

True, but I still think Sunday is better. Gets it done early in the week.

0 coins

Fair point. I just like to take my time and make sure I'm reporting everything correctly.

Make sure you understand what week you're filing for! I messed this up early on and reported the wrong dates. Had to call Washington ESD to get it corrected.

How did you get through to them? I can never reach anyone when I call.

Honestly I used Claimyr after trying to call for days. They have this system that keeps trying to get you through to an agent automatically. Worth checking out their video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

The most important thing is consistency. File every single week, even if you think you might not qualify that week. Better to file and get denied than to miss filing and mess up your claim.

This is really important advice. I've seen people lose weeks of benefits because they thought they didn't need to file.

Diego Vargas

•

Exactly. The system is pretty unforgiving if you miss weeks without good cause.

Also don't forget about the 4-week rule. If you don't file for 4 consecutive weeks, your claim gets closed and you have to reopen it.

•

Wait what?? I didn't know about this rule!

0 coins

Yeah it's buried in the rules somewhere. That's why you always need to keep filing even if you think you won't get paid.

One more thing - if you work any hours during the week, you still need to file and report those hours. Washington ESD will calculate your partial benefits. Don't assume you can't get anything if you worked a little.

Good to know! I was wondering about that since I might pick up some part-time work.

Yeah just be honest about your earnings. They'll figure out if you still qualify for partial benefits.

The key dates to remember: file every Sunday for the previous week (Sunday-Saturday), keep up with your job search requirements, and never miss more than 3 weeks in a row. That covers most of the important timing rules.

This is really helpful, thank you! I feel much more confident about the timing now.

0 coins

Good summary. The timing really isn't that complicated once you get the hang of it.

Just wanted to add - if you're ever unsure about timing or have questions about your specific situation, it's worth calling Washington ESD. I know it's hard to get through but they can give you definitive answers.

I tried calling for weeks and never got through. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected to an agent the same day. Game changer for dealing with Washington ESD phone system.

0 coins

Yeah I've heard good things about that service. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get clarity.

Been on unemployment twice in the past few years and the timing is always the same - Sunday filings for the previous week. Set that reminder and stick to it religiously!

Thanks for the confirmation! I'm setting my reminder right now.

Don't overthink it too much. The system will tell you when you can file your next weekly claim. Just log in regularly and look for the option to file.

True, but it's still good to understand the timing so you don't panic if something seems off.

Final reminder - your weekly claim certification is basically you confirming you're still unemployed and looking for work. Be accurate with your answers because they do check these things during audits.

Got it. Accuracy is key. Thanks everyone for all the help with understanding the timing!

I had the same confusion when I first started! One thing that helped me was creating a simple calendar reminder that says "File UI weekly claim for [previous week dates]" every Sunday. Also, if you ever miss a week by accident, don't panic - just file as soon as you remember and call Washington ESD to explain. They're usually understanding about honest mistakes as long as you don't make it a habit.
