Washington ESD weekly claim filing - when claiming unemployment benefits what's the deadline?
I'm new to this whole unemployment thing and really confused about the timing for when claiming unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I filed my initial claim two weeks ago and it got approved, but now I'm not sure when I'm supposed to file my weekly claims. Do I file every Sunday? Or is it based on when I first applied? I tried calling Washington ESD but kept getting busy signals. My benefit year started on January 6th if that matters. Really don't want to mess this up and lose my benefits over a technicality.

You need to file your weekly claim for the week ending on Saturday, and you can file it starting Sunday morning. So if the benefit week ended Saturday Jan 11th, you can file that claim starting Sunday Jan 12th. The deadline is usually the following Saturday night before the next week starts.

•Thank you! So I file every Sunday for the previous week that just ended? That makes sense now.

•Yes exactly. And make sure you answer all the questions honestly about any work you did that week, even if it was just a few hours.

I've been on unemployment for 3 months now and still sometimes get confused about the timing lol. The Washington ESD system opens up Sunday morning around 6am I think? I usually just do it first thing Sunday morning so I don't forget.

•Good idea about doing it early Sunday. I'm worried I'll forget if I wait until later in the week.

•The system is usually less glitchy early Sunday morning too, before everyone else tries to log in at once.

I had the same confusion when I started. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•How much does that cost? I'm already stretched thin financially.

•It's worth it if you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. I was stuck for weeks trying to get through on my own.

•I'll check that out if I keep having problems reaching them. Thanks for the suggestion!

Make sure you're filing for the right week! I accidentally filed for the wrong week once and it messed up my whole payment schedule. You file for the week that ENDED, not the current week you're in.

•Oh wow I didn't realize that distinction was so important. So this Sunday I would file for last week (Jan 5-11)?

•Exactly! You always file for the week that just ended on Saturday.

•They do send email reminders if you sign up for them in your account settings. Check under notifications.

Important reminder: you also need to be doing your job search activities during each week you're claiming. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby status. Keep track of these because they can audit your job search log at any time.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying to jobs or other things too?

•Job applications, networking events, career fairs, contacting employers directly, updating your resume. There's a full list on the Washington ESD website under job search requirements.

•I didn't know about the 3 activities per week rule when I started. Luckily they didn't audit me but I could have gotten in trouble.

Pro tip: set a phone reminder for every Sunday morning so you don't forget to file. Missing even one week can cause delays in your payments and you might have to call Washington ESD to fix it.

•This happened to me! Forgot one week and then had to wait forever to get through to someone to straighten it out.

•Setting that reminder right now. Thanks for the heads up!

The weekly claim questions are pretty straightforward but read them carefully. They ask about work, earnings, job offers, and if you were able and available to work. Answer honestly because false claims can get you in serious trouble with Washington ESD.

•What if I did some gig work during the week? Do I need to report that even if it was just like $50?

Christian Bierman
•Yes, report ALL earnings no matter how small. They'll deduct it from your weekly benefit but you won't get in trouble for reporting it.

•And if you don't report it and they find out later, that's fraud and they'll make you pay everything back plus penalties.

I've been claiming for 6 months now and the routine becomes second nature. File every Sunday for the previous week, keep your job search log updated, report any earnings. The Washington ESD online system is actually pretty user-friendly once you get used to it.

•That's reassuring to hear. I was worried it would be complicated forever.

•Yeah the first few weeks are the hardest. After that it's just routine.

If your claim is ever under adjudication or you have issues with payments, that's when you'll really need to talk to Washington ESD directly. I used Claimyr again last month when my claim got flagged for some reason - saved me from spending all day trying to get through their phone system.

•I'm definitely bookmarking that service. The thought of trying to call Washington ESD gives me anxiety.

•It's honestly a lifesaver when you actually need to reach a human being there.

Don't stress too much about the timing - as long as you file by Saturday night for the previous week you're fine. I usually do mine Sunday or Monday and never had issues.

•Good to know there's some flexibility in the timing. I was worried it had to be exactly Sunday morning.

Just remember that when claiming unemployment benefits, consistency is key. File every week even if you worked a few hours or made some money. It's better to report everything and let Washington ESD calculate your benefit than to skip filing and mess up your claim.

Ellie Lopez
•That makes sense. Better to be safe than sorry with these things.

Chad Winthrope
•Exactly. The worst thing you can do is stop filing weekly claims without notifying Washington ESD properly.

One thing I learned the hard way - if you're going out of town or won't have internet access, you can still file your weekly claim from your phone. The mobile site works fine for the basic weekly claim process.

•Yeah just make sure you have good cell service when you do it. I had it time out once on slow wifi and had to start over.

If anyone's still having trouble reaching Washington ESD when you need help, I also had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Really came through when I had an adjudication issue that needed immediate attention.

•Seems like several people have had good experiences with that. I'll definitely keep it in mind if I run into problems.

Bottom line - file every Sunday for the week that ended Saturday, be honest about work and earnings, keep doing your job search, and you'll be fine. The Washington ESD system isn't as scary as it seems at first.
