When can I file my weekly claim for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I'm still figuring out the timing for filing my weekly unemployment claims with Washington ESD. I submitted my initial application last week and it got approved, but I'm not sure exactly when I'm supposed to file my first weekly claim. Is there a specific day of the week I need to do this? And what happens if I miss the deadline? I don't want to mess anything up since I really need these benefits.

You can file your weekly claim starting Sunday for the previous week. So if you're filing for the week of January 6-12, you'd file it on Sunday January 19th or any day after that. Just don't wait too long because you only have until the following Saturday to submit it.

•Thanks! So I file on Sunday for the week that just ended? That makes sense now.

•Wait I thought you filed for the current week not the previous week? I'm so confused about this timing thing.

The Washington ESD system opens up every Sunday at 6 AM for weekly claim filing. You're filing for the week that ended the day before (Saturday). So every Sunday you file for Monday through Sunday of the previous week. You have until 11:59 PM the following Saturday to get it submitted.

•This is exactly right. I've been doing this for months now and it's become routine.

•Perfect, so I'll set a reminder for Sunday mornings. Do I need to file at exactly 6 AM or can I do it later in the day?

•You can file anytime after 6 AM on Sunday through Saturday at midnight. I usually do mine Sunday evening to avoid the early morning rush.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this same question last month and spent literally 4 hours on hold before giving up. The phone system is absolutely terrible - you either get busy signals or sit on hold forever just to ask a simple timing question.

•I had the same problem trying to reach them! Found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually gets you through to Washington ESD agents without all the hold time. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm desperate to talk to someone about my claim status.

•They basically handle the calling process for you and connect you directly to an agent when one becomes available. No more sitting on hold or getting disconnected.

make sure you dont miss filing your weekly claim because if you do you might lose that weeks benefits completely! happened to my friend and washington esd wouldnt backdate it

Sophie Footman
•Oh no, that's scary! Is there any way to recover a missed week or is it just gone forever?

Connor Rupert
•You can sometimes get it backdated if you have good cause, but it's not guaranteed and requires extra paperwork. Better to just set up reminders.

I'm still confused about the whole thing. So if today is Wednesday, what week am I filing for this Sunday? This is my first time on unemployment and the whole system seems unnecessarily complicated.

•If today is Wednesday January 15th, then this Sunday January 19th you would file for the week of January 6-12 (Monday through Sunday). You're always filing for the week that just ended.

•OK that helps, thanks. Why can't they just make this more obvious on their website?

•The Washington ESD website is pretty confusing. I bookmarked the weekly claim page so I don't have to navigate through all their menus every time.

Does anyone know if the timing is different for standby claims? I'm on standby status through my union and wasn't sure if the same Sunday schedule applies.

Connor Rupert
•Standby claims follow the same weekly filing schedule. Sunday through Saturday filing window for the previous week.

•Good to know, thanks. The union rep wasn't clear about that part.

Pro tip: if you file early Sunday morning right when the system opens at 6 AM, it processes faster and you get paid sooner in the week. I usually get my deposit by Tuesday when I file early.

•That's a great tip! I'll definitely try filing early Sunday morning.

•I tried this but the website was super slow at 6 AM on Sunday. Seemed like everyone had the same idea.

Washington ESD really needs to fix their communication about filing deadlines. I missed my first two weeks because I thought I filed for the current week, not the previous week. Cost me almost $800 in benefits.

Sophie Footman
•That's awful! Were you able to get those weeks back eventually?

Sebastián Stevens
•Nope, they said I filed too late and didn't have good cause. Really frustrated with the whole system.

•This is exactly why I started using Claimyr when I needed to talk to Washington ESD about claim issues. Much easier than trying to get through their phone system when you have problems.

Just wanted to add that you can also file your weekly claim through the mobile app if you don't want to use the website. Same timing rules apply though - Sunday 6 AM through Saturday midnight.

•There's a mobile app? That might be more convenient for me.

•Yeah, search for 'Washington ESD' in your app store. Works pretty well most of the time.

I always file mine on Sunday evenings around 8 PM. Never had any issues and it's become part of my weekly routine. Just remember to have your job search activities ready to report.

•Good reminder about the job search log. I need to make sure I'm keeping track of that too.

•How many job search activities do you need to report each week?

•It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your individual requirements since it can vary based on your situation.

THE WHOLE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS A MESS! Why is it so hard to figure out when to file a simple weekly claim? Other states make this way more obvious on their websites.

•I agree the communication could be better, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty straightforward.

•Maybe for you but I've been struggling with this system for weeks trying to get straight answers.

One thing that helped me was writing down the filing schedule and keeping it by my computer. Every Sunday = file for the previous Monday-Sunday week. Simple once you remember it.

•That's a good idea. I'm going to make myself a note and stick it somewhere I'll see it.

•I set a phone reminder for every Sunday at 7 AM. Works great.

For anyone still confused: Washington ESD weekly claim filing window is Sunday 6 AM through Saturday 11:59 PM. You're reporting for the week that ended the day before you file (Saturday). So Sunday you report Monday-Sunday of the previous week. Don't overthink it.

Quick question - if I file my weekly claim on Sunday, when should I expect to see the payment in my account?

Jessica Nolan
•Usually Tuesday or Wednesday if you have direct deposit set up and file early on Sunday.

•Great, thanks! I have direct deposit so that should work.

I learned about Claimyr from this thread and tried it last week when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about a claim issue. Actually worked - got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. Pretty impressed.

One last tip - make sure you're logging into the right Washington ESD website. There are some fake sites out there that look similar but aren't the official one.
