What day do you file unemployment weekly claims in Washington ESD?
I'm new to filing unemployment and trying to figure out the schedule. What day of the week am I supposed to file my weekly claim with Washington ESD? I got approved last week but I'm confused about when exactly I need to submit my weekly certification. Don't want to miss any deadlines or mess up my benefits.

You file your weekly claim every Sunday for the previous week. So this Sunday you'd file for last week (Monday through Sunday). You have until Saturday night to file but I always do it Sunday morning to stay on schedule.

•Thanks! So I file every Sunday for the week that just ended? That makes sense.

•Yep exactly. And make sure you answer all the questions honestly about any work you did or money you earned that week.

Just to clarify - your weekly claim is available starting Sunday at 6 AM and you have until 11:59 PM the following Saturday to file it. Most people file on Sunday but you don't have to. The important thing is not to miss the deadline.

•Good to know I have the whole week to file if needed. Is there any advantage to filing early vs later in the week?

Aidan Percy
•Filing early means you get paid faster - usually by Tuesday if you file Sunday. If you wait until Friday or Saturday, your payment might not process until the following week.

•I learned this the hard way when I filed late and had to wait extra days for my money to hit my account.

Been dealing with Washington ESD for months and honestly the biggest headache is when you need to actually talk to someone. If you ever need to call them about your claim status or have issues, good luck getting through. I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you connected to ESD agents - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I tried calling ESD once and was on hold for 3 hours before getting disconnected.

Norman Fraser
•Yeah that's exactly why I started using it. You go to claimyr.com and they handle the calling for you. Way better than sitting on hold all day.

•Is this legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at ESD.

DONT FORGET TO DO YOUR JOB SEARCH REQUIREMENTS TOO! You need 3 job search activities per week and you have to log them in your WorkSource account. I almost got disqualified because I forgot to do this.

Thais Soares
•Wait what? I didn't know about job search requirements. Where do I find information about this?

Nalani Liu
•It should be explained in your eligibility determination letter. You need to register with WorkSourceWA and complete 3 job search activities every week you claim benefits.

Hattie Carson
•Yes exactly! And keep records of everything because they can audit you at any time.

Pro tip: set a Sunday morning reminder on your phone to file your weekly claim. I do mine every Sunday at 8 AM with my coffee. Creates a routine and you never forget.

Thais Soares
•That's a great idea. I'm definitely going to set up a reminder.

•Same here, I have it in my calendar as a recurring event every Sunday.

Make sure you have all your information ready when you file. They ask about any work you did, any money you earned (including under the table stuff), if you were available for work, etc. Don't rush through it.

•What happens if I worked a few hours during the week? Do I still get some unemployment?
0 coins
Aidan Percy
•Yes, you can work part-time and still receive partial unemployment benefits. Washington ESD has a formula where they reduce your weekly benefit amount based on how much you earned that week.

Fernanda Marquez
•Just make sure you report ALL earnings honestly. They cross-check with employers and the IRS.

Been filing for 8 weeks now and it's pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. The website can be slow on Sunday mornings though because everyone's filing at the same time.

Thais Soares
•Good to know about the website being slow. Maybe I'll file Sunday afternoon instead of morning.

Axel Bourke
•I've never had issues filing early Sunday morning around 7-8 AM. Might be worse later in the day.

One thing that confused me at first - you're filing for the week that already ended, not the current week. So if it's Sunday Jan 12th, you're filing for the week of Jan 5-11.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•That makes sense. So I'm always filing for last week's activities, not this week.
0 coins
Nalani Liu
•Exactly. And you can't file early for future weeks - it's always for the completed week.

Does anyone know what happens if you miss filing your weekly claim? I was sick last week and completely forgot.

•You can file late claims but there's usually a limit on how far back you can go. You should call ESD to ask about your specific situation.
0 coins
Norman Fraser
•Good luck calling them directly though. That's another situation where Claimyr would be helpful - they can get you through to actually talk to someone about missed claims.

Dyllan Nantx
•Thanks, I'll look into that Claimyr thing if I can't get through myself.

The most important thing is just don't skip weeks. Even if you worked full time one week, you should still file your claim and report your earnings. Skipping weeks can mess up your claim.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•Why would I file if I worked full time? Wouldn't I not get any benefits that week anyway?
0 coins
Aidan Percy
•You're right that you probably won't get benefits that week, but you need to maintain your claim by filing every week. Skipping weeks can cause your claim to become inactive.
0 coins
TillyCombatwarrior
•Exactly. It's like checking in to keep your claim active, even if you don't get paid that particular week.

I've been filing unemployment for 3 months and honestly the hardest part isn't the weekly filing, it's when something goes wrong and you need to actually reach someone at ESD. Last month my claim went into adjudication and I couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that happening to my claim?
0 coins
Anna Xian
•It's when they need to review your claim for some reason - could be a question about your eligibility or conflicting information. Usually takes weeks to resolve.
0 coins
Norman Fraser
•That's exactly when Claimyr saved me time. Instead of calling ESD 50 times, I used their service to get connected and actually talked to someone who could explain what was happening with my adjudication.

Quick question - do I need to file a claim for this week if I just got approved on Friday? Or do I wait until next Sunday?
0 coins
Nalani Liu
•If you got approved Friday, you should check your ESD account to see if there's a weekly claim available to file. Sometimes there is, sometimes you wait until the next Sunday.
0 coins
Aidan Percy
•Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look at your ESD homepage. If there's a weekly claim ready to file, do it. If not, wait for Sunday.

•Thanks! I'll check my account right now.

Been unemployed twice in the last 5 years and the process is way easier now than it used to be. The online system works pretty well most of the time.

Thais Soares
•That's good to hear. I was worried this was going to be really complicated.

•Nah, once you file your first weekly claim you'll see it's pretty straightforward. Just answer the questions honestly and file on time.

Make sure you keep your contact information updated in your ESD account too. They'll send important notices by mail and email, and you don't want to miss anything.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•Good point. I should double-check that my address is correct in my account.

Nadia Zaldivar
•Yeah and if you move while on unemployment, update it immediately. Missing important mail from ESD can cause problems with your benefits.

Does the filing time matter for when you get paid? Like if I file Sunday morning vs Saturday night?
0 coins
Aidan Percy
•Generally if you file Sunday or Monday, you'll get paid Tuesday. Filing later in the week might delay your payment until the following Tuesday.
0 coins
Lukas Fitzgerald
•Good to know. I'll stick with Sunday mornings then.

Just wanted to add that if you have any issues with your weekly filing or questions about your claim status, don't waste time trying to call ESD directly. I spent literally hours on hold before someone told me about Claimyr. Game changer for actually getting help when you need it.

Thais Soares
•Seems like a lot of people here have used that service. Must actually work if so many people recommend it.

•Yeah it's legit. Check out their demo video if you want to see how it works before trying it.

The weekly filing becomes second nature after a few weeks. The thing that trips people up more is understanding what counts as job search activities and making sure you're doing enough each week.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•What exactly counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?
0 coins
Nalani Liu
•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, updating your resume, online skills training - there's a list on the WorkSourceWA website of what qualifies.
0 coins
Avery Davis
•And you need to keep detailed records because they can audit your job search activities at any time.

Been filing for 6 months now and my advice is just be consistent. Same day every week, same time if possible. Makes it a habit so you don't forget.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•That's what I'm planning to do. Sunday mornings seem to be the most popular time based on everyone's responses here.

•Yep, Sunday morning with coffee is my routine. Quick and easy way to start the week.

One last thing - make sure you understand the difference between your waiting week and regular benefit weeks. Your first week might be a waiting week where you file but don't get paid.
0 coins
Thais Soares
•Wait, there's a waiting week? No one mentioned that when I applied.
0 coins
Aidan Percy
•Washington eliminated the waiting week during COVID and I believe it's still eliminated, but it's worth checking your determination letter to be sure.

Marcelle Drum
•Oh good point, I forgot they got rid of the waiting week. Shows how much things have changed with unemployment recently.

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I had the same confusion when I first started filing. Just to add one more tip - if you're ever unsure about how to answer one of the weekly certification questions, there's usually a "help" or "?" button next to each question that explains what they're looking for. I found that really useful my first few times filing. The key is just being honest and consistent with your answers each week.
