What day do you file Washington ESD unemployment claim - confused about weekly filing schedule
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and I'm totally confused about when I'm supposed to file my weekly claims with Washington ESD. The paperwork mentions something about filing on specific days but I can't figure out what day I should be doing this. Do I file on the same day every week? Is it based on when I first applied or my last day of work? I'm worried about missing deadlines and messing up my payments.

You file your weekly claim starting the Sunday after your waiting week. So if your claim started on a Monday, you'd file your first weekly claim the following Sunday for that week. After that, you file every Sunday for the previous week.

•Wait so I file ON Sunday or BY Sunday? And what time does the system open?

•You can file starting Sunday morning through the following Saturday. Most people file on Sunday to get it done early. System is usually available 24/7 except for maintenance.

The filing schedule isn't based on your last day of work - it's based on when your claim becomes effective. Your waiting week is the first week of your claim, then you start filing weekly claims after that. Make sure you're logging into your SecureAccess Washington account to file online.

•Thank you! I've been so worried I was going to mess this up somehow.

•Honestly the Washington ESD website can be confusing at first but once you do it a couple times it becomes automatic.

I had the same question when I started! What really helped me was using Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD agent who walked me through the whole schedule. I found them at claimyr.com and they have this demo video https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Way better than trying to figure it out from the confusing paperwork.

•How much does that service cost? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks.

•They help you get through to agents when the lines are busy. Definitely worth it when you need answers fast and can't get through on your own.

•That's interesting, I might check that out if I run into problems.

Just to be clear - you file weekly claims EVERY week you want to receive benefits, even if you worked some hours that week. You still need to report any work and earnings.

•Good point! I did have a couple small jobs last week so I need to report those.

•Exactly, always report all work even if it's just a few hours. Washington ESD will calculate your partial benefits.

The Sunday thing confused me too at first. I thought it meant I had to file BY Sunday but you actually file ON Sunday for the previous week. Like this Sunday I'll file for the week that just ended.

•That makes sense! So I'm always filing for the week that already happened.

•Right, you're certifying that you were unemployed and available for work during the previous week.

also make sure you do your job search activities before you file because they ask about that in the weekly claim

•Oh right, I need to be applying for jobs too. How many do I need?

•For Washington ESD it's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your specific requirements in your account.

I always set a phone reminder for Sunday mornings so I don't forget. Missing a week can be a pain to fix later.

•Good idea! I'll set up a recurring reminder right now.

•Yeah and if you do miss a week you can usually file late but it might delay your payment.

The system usually updates pretty quick after you file on Sunday. I usually see my payment pending by Monday or Tuesday.

•That's good to know! I was wondering how long payments take.

•Yeah it's not bad, way faster than when I had to mail in paper forms years ago.

Just be careful about the questions they ask during weekly filing. Read them carefully because some are worded confusingly and if you answer wrong it can flag your claim for review.

•What kind of questions do they ask?

Grace Johnson
•Things like were you able and available for work, did you refuse any job offers, did you work or earn money, did you look for work. Pretty standard stuff but read carefully.

•The able and available question trips people up sometimes. You have to be ready and willing to accept suitable work.

I use the mobile site on my phone and it works fine for filing weekly claims. Sometimes easier than trying to remember to get on a computer.

•Good to know the mobile version works! I'm always on my phone anyway.

•Yeah just make sure you have good connection when you submit it so it doesn't error out.

Don't stress too much about it - the weekly filing becomes routine really quick. I've been doing it for 8 weeks now and it takes maybe 3-4 minutes each Sunday.

•That's reassuring! It seemed overwhelming at first but it sounds pretty straightforward.

•Exactly, once you do it once or twice you'll have it down pat.

If you run into any technical issues with the website, I had good luck using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier to get through to tech support. The regular customer service line was always busy but they helped me reach someone who could fix my login problems.

•Yeah Washington ESD phone lines are brutal, anything that helps you actually talk to someone is worth it.

Make sure you keep track of your confirmation numbers after you file each week. Save screenshots or write them down in case you need proof later.

•Great tip! I'll start a folder on my phone for all my unemployment stuff.

The whole system seems designed to be confusing honestly. I spent my first two weeks worried I was doing everything wrong.

•You'll get the hang of it though. Everyone feels lost at first but it's really not that complicated once you understand the routine.

One thing to remember - if you're going out of town or something, you can usually file your weekly claim from anywhere as long as you have internet. Just make sure you're still doing your job search activities.

•That's helpful, I have a family visit planned next month.

•Yeah just don't miss your filing deadline because you're traveling. Set that reminder!

I know I mentioned Claimyr before but seriously, if anyone needs to talk to Washington ESD about their filing schedule or any other questions, that service saved me so much frustration. The regular lines are impossible to get through most days.

Just wanted to add that if you're still within your first few weeks, double-check that you've completed your waiting week properly. I made the mistake of thinking I could file immediately after approval, but you actually can't receive benefits for that first week - it's just a waiting period. So don't panic if your first weekly claim doesn't result in a payment right away. The system will show you clearly which weeks are payable vs. your waiting week once you get into the routine.
