What day do you file weekly unemployment claims with Washington ESD?
I'm new to filing unemployment and I'm confused about when I'm supposed to submit my weekly claim. I got approved for benefits last week but I don't want to mess up the timing. Do I file every Sunday? Or is it based on when I first filed? I've been looking all over the Washington ESD website but can't find a clear answer about what day of the week to file.

You can file your weekly claim starting Sunday morning for the previous week. Most people file on Sunday or Monday but you have until Saturday to get it in. The key is filing for the week that just ended.

•So if I file on Sunday, I'm reporting for the week that ended Saturday? That makes sense, thanks!

•Yep exactly. And make sure you file every single week even if you worked some hours or you might lose benefits.

The Washington ESD weekly claim filing window runs from Sunday at 6 AM through Saturday at 11:59 PM. You're reporting for the week that ended the previous Saturday. So if you file on Sunday January 12th, you're reporting for the week of January 5-11.

•This is super helpful! I was worried I had to file on a specific day. So any day Sunday through Saturday works?

•Correct, you have the full week to file. Just don't miss the Saturday deadline or you'll have to explain why you filed late.

I always file mine on Sunday mornings with my coffee. It's become a routine and I never forget that way. The Washington ESD system is usually pretty fast on Sunday mornings too.

•Good idea! I should pick a consistent day so I don't forget.

•Sunday morning sounds perfect. How long does it usually take to complete?

•Like 5-10 minutes max if you don't have any work to report. Longer if you worked and have to enter hours and wages.

Just a heads up - if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your weekly claims, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you connected to a real person. They have a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Really? I've been trying to call for days about another issue. How does it work?

•You just go to claimyr.com and they handle the calling for you. Way better than sitting on hold forever.

•Yes I saw that on my benefits page. Do I report those when I file my weekly claim?

Jacob Smithson
•You don't report them weekly but you need to keep records. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities.

One more tip - if you work any hours during the week, make sure you report the gross wages (before taxes) not your take-home pay. Common mistake that can cause issues.

•Good to know! I might have some part-time work starting soon so I'll remember that.

•And report the wages for the week you actually worked, not when you got paid. The timing matters.

I messed up my first few weeks because I thought I had to file on the same day every week. Turns out you just need to file sometime during the filing window. Wish someone had told me that earlier!

•That's exactly what I was confused about! Glad I asked here first.

•Same here. The Washington ESD instructions could be clearer about this.

Question - what happens if you file late? I missed one week because I was sick and forgot.

Jacob Smithson
•You can usually file a late claim but you'll need to explain why it was late. Washington ESD might accept it depending on the reason.

•Thanks, I'll try to file it and explain I was sick. Hopefully they accept it.

The system goes down for maintenance sometimes on Sunday mornings early. If you can't get in right at 6 AM, just wait an hour or two.

•Good to know! I'll plan for that possibility.

Another thing about Claimyr - I used it when I had questions about whether I was reporting my hours correctly on my weekly claims. The Washington ESD rep was able to look at my account and confirm I was doing it right. Super helpful.

•How much does it cost? Seems like it might be worth it to avoid the phone hassle.

•Check their site at claimyr.com for details. For me it was worth it just to get answers quickly instead of spending hours trying to call.

I file mine every Tuesday morning before work. Gives me time on the weekend to gather any wage info if I need it, and Tuesday is usually a quiet day on the system.

•That's smart planning! I think I'll go with Sunday mornings but Tuesday sounds good too.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE EVERY WEEK even if you think you might not be eligible that week. If you skip weeks you can lose benefits permanently!

•Really? Even if I work full time one week I should still file?
0 coins
Jacob Smithson
•Yes, file every week. If you worked full time you'll get $0 that week but you keep your claim active. If you don't file, Washington ESD might close your claim.

The mobile app works pretty well for filing weekly claims too if you prefer that over the website.

•There's a mobile app? I didn't know that. What's it called?

•It's called WA Unemployment. You can get it from the app store. Same login as the website.

Pro tip: take screenshots of your completed weekly claim submission. If there's ever a dispute about whether you filed, you'll have proof.

•That's really smart! I wouldn't have thought of that but it makes total sense.

•Yes! I learned this the hard way when Washington ESD said I hadn't filed a claim that I definitely submitted.

If you have standby status (like for temporary layoffs), you still file weekly claims the same way. Just make sure your employer is still reporting you as on standby.

Emily Jackson
•I don't think I have standby status but good to know for the future!

I had issues with my weekly claims getting stuck and used Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD who could fix it. They were able to process my backed-up claims right away. Definitely recommend if you run into problems.

•Good to keep in mind! Hopefully I won't need it but it's nice to know there's an option if I get stuck.

•I've seen that Claimyr mentioned a few times in this thread. Might be worth bookmarking just in case.

Remember you can file your weekly claim even if you're waiting for your regular UI benefits to be approved. Don't wait - file every week from the start.

Emily Jackson
•That's exactly my situation! I just got approved so I wasn't sure when to start. I'll file this Sunday for sure.
0 coins
Jacob Smithson
•Correct. File weekly claims starting the week after you file your initial application, even during adjudication.
