When do you file weekly unemployment claims in Washington ESD?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and I'm confused about when I'm supposed to file my weekly claims. The Washington ESD website says something about filing every Sunday but I'm not sure if that means I can file starting Sunday or if I have to wait until a specific time. Also do I file for the week that just ended or the week coming up? This is my first time on unemployment and I don't want to mess up the timing and lose benefits.

You file your weekly claim on Sunday for the week that just ended (Saturday to Saturday). So if you're filing on Sunday January 12th, you're claiming for the week of January 4th through January 10th. The system opens at 6 AM on Sunday and you have until 11:59 PM on the following Saturday to file.

•Thank you! So I don't have to wait for a specific Sunday to start, I can file this upcoming Sunday for last week?

Elin Robinson
•Exactly. As long as your claim is active and approved, you file every Sunday for the previous week.

Yeah the timing is confusing at first. I missed my first week because I thought I had to wait for some kind of notification from Washington ESD. You don't - just log into your account every Sunday and file the weekly claim.

•Did you lose that week's benefits when you missed filing?

Atticus Domingo
•Yeah you can't go back and claim weeks you missed. That's why it's important to file every single Sunday even if you worked that week.

I've been trying to file my weekly claims but keep getting stuck on the Washington ESD website. It takes forever to load and sometimes kicks me out. Anyone else having this problem?

•The website gets overloaded on Sunday mornings. Try filing later in the day or early Monday morning - you have until Saturday night to file.

•If you're having persistent issues with the website, you can call Washington ESD to file by phone. Though good luck getting through on the regular number. I actually found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you get through to ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Thanks I'll check that out. The website issues are driving me crazy.

WAIT so if I got approved on a Wednesday do I file that Sunday for just the 3 days I was approved or do I wait until the following Sunday to file for a full week?

Elin Robinson
•You file that Sunday for whatever days you were eligible that week. So if you were approved Wednesday, you'd claim Thursday, Friday, and Saturday when you file on Sunday.

•Okay that makes sense. And then going forward I file every Sunday for the full week?

Elin Robinson
•Correct. Every Sunday for the full previous week.

Does it matter what time on Sunday you file? I usually do it right at 6 AM but wondering if there's any advantage to filing early vs late in the day.

Elin Robinson
•No advantage timing-wise as long as you file before the Saturday night deadline. Some people prefer early Sunday to avoid website traffic, others wait until later.

•I always file Sunday morning because I'm worried I'll forget if I wait. Set a reminder on your phone.

The Washington ESD system is so backwards. Why can't we just file for the current week instead of having to remember what happened last week? And why only Sunday through Saturday filing window?

•I think it's because they need time to process the claims and determine eligibility before paying out benefits. Filing for the week that already ended makes sense from an administrative standpoint.

•I guess but it's still confusing for new people. They should make it clearer on the website.

Another question - if I work some hours during the week, do I still file a weekly claim that Sunday?
0 coins
Elin Robinson
•Yes, you still file and report the hours you worked and gross wages earned. Washington ESD will calculate if you're eligible for partial benefits that week.

•Good to know. I have a part-time job lined up and wasn't sure if that would affect my weekly filing.

I've been on unemployment for 6 months and still sometimes forget which week I'm filing for lol. The key thing is just to be consistent - file every Sunday no matter what.

•Ha! Good to know I'm not the only one who finds this confusing. I'll set up a calendar reminder.

Elin Robinson
•That's smart. Missing even one week can mess up your benefit payments.

Update: I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked! Got through to a Washington ESD agent in like 10 minutes instead of calling for hours. They confirmed my weekly claim went through even though the website was acting up.

•Glad it worked for you! I've used it a few times when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

•How much does it cost? Might be worth it if it saves me from the phone runaround.

Beth Ford
•It's worth it for the time saved alone. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

Pro tip: if you're worried about forgetting to file, you can set up a recurring calendar reminder for every Sunday at 8 AM. I title mine 'File Weekly UI Claim' so I know exactly what I need to do.

•That's a great idea! I'm going to set that up right now.

•Smart. I should do this too since I already almost forgot once.

Just want to add - make sure you're logging into the correct Washington ESD website. There are some fake sites out there. Always use secure.esd.wa.gov for your weekly claims.

Ivanna St. Pierre
•Good point. I bookmarked the official site so I don't accidentally go to the wrong place.

Elin Robinson
•Yes, always double-check the URL. The official site will have the wa.gov domain.

What happens if you file late in the week? Like if I file on Friday instead of Sunday, will I still get paid for that week?
0 coins
Elin Robinson
•As long as you file before Saturday night at 11:59 PM, you should be fine. The payment might be delayed but you won't lose the week.

Atticus Domingo
•I've filed on Wednesday before and still got paid, just took an extra day or two to process.

Does anyone know if there's a mobile app for filing weekly claims? The website is so clunky on my phone.
0 coins
Elin Robinson
•Washington ESD doesn't have an official mobile app. You have to use the website through your phone browser or call in your claim.

Morita Montoya
•Yeah the mobile website is pretty bad. That's another reason why services like Claimyr can be helpful - they can file your claim over the phone if you're having technical issues.

I wish they would send email reminders about filing weekly claims. I know it's my responsibility but a little nudge would be helpful.

Ivanna St. Pierre
•That would be nice! Maybe we should suggest it to Washington ESD. Though I doubt they'd implement it anytime soon.

•That's why the calendar reminder is so important. Can't rely on the state to remind you.

Been filing weekly claims for 4 months now and the process is pretty straightforward once you get used to it. The key points: file every Sunday, report for the previous week, and don't skip even if you worked.

•Thanks for the summary! That's exactly what I needed to hear from someone with experience.

•Perfect summary. Those are the three most important things to remember.

Quick question - if I'm on standby status with my employer, do I still file weekly claims the same way?
0 coins
Elin Robinson
•Yes, standby status still requires weekly claim filing. You'll have different questions about your availability and work search requirements, but the timing is the same.

Sasha Reese
•Got it, thanks. I wasn't sure if standby had different rules.

The thing that confused me most was realizing you file every single week, even weeks when you might not be eligible. Better to file and let them determine eligibility than to skip and lose benefits.
0 coins
Ivanna St. Pierre
•That's a good point. I was wondering if I should skip weeks when I work more hours.
0 coins
Elin Robinson
•Never skip filing. Always report your work and wages and let Washington ESD calculate your eligibility for that week.

For anyone still confused about timing: Think of it like this - every Sunday you're 'reporting' what happened in your job search the previous week. That's why you file on Sunday for the week that just ended.
0 coins
Ivanna St. Pierre
•That's a great way to think about it! Like a weekly report rather than a request for future benefits.

Kingston Bellamy
•Yeah that makes way more sense when you frame it that way.

Does the waiting week count? Like if I'm in my waiting week, do I still file a weekly claim that Sunday?
0 coins
Elin Robinson
•Yes, you file during the waiting week too. You won't get paid for that week but you still need to file to keep your claim active and establish the filing pattern.
0 coins
Diez Ellis
•Okay good to know. I thought maybe I should wait until after the waiting week to start filing.

This thread has been super helpful! I start unemployment next week and was totally confused about the filing schedule. Now I know to file every Sunday starting with my first eligible week.

•Happy to help. The timing is the trickiest part for new claimants but once you get in the routine it becomes automatic.
