When do I claim my weekly unemployment benefits in Washington ESD system?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits last week and I'm confused about the timing for filing my weekly claims. The Washington ESD website says I can file weekly claims but doesn't clearly explain WHEN I'm supposed to do it each week. Do I file at the beginning of the week for the previous week? Or at the end of the week? I don't want to mess this up and delay my payments. Also, is there a specific day of the week I should be filing or can I do it anytime during the week?

You file your weekly claim for the week that just ended. So if the benefit week runs Sunday through Saturday, you would file your claim on Sunday or any day after that for the previous week. Washington ESD opens the weekly claim filing every Sunday morning.

•Okay so I file on Sunday for the week that just ended Saturday? That makes sense, thank you!

•exactly right. and dont wait too long - you have to file within a certain timeframe or you might lose that weeks benefits

The weekly claim filing opens every Sunday at 6 AM and you can file through the following Saturday. You're claiming benefits for the week that ended the previous Saturday. Make sure you answer all the questions accurately about any work you did or income you received during that benefit week.

•Good to know about the 6 AM start time. I was trying to file early Sunday morning and the system wasn't letting me.

•The system can be really slow on Sunday mornings because everyone tries to file at once. I usually wait until Sunday afternoon or Monday.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and calling them is impossible. If you ever need to talk to someone about your weekly claims or anything else, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Game changer for me.

•How much does that cost? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status.

•It's worth it compared to spending hours on hold and getting disconnected. Way less stressful than the usual ESD phone nightmare.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Might have to check it out since I can never get through to ESD either.

make sure you file every single week even if you worked some hours that week. you still report the work and they'll calculate your partial benefits. missing a week completely can mess up your claim

•What if I worked a full week and made more than my weekly benefit amount? Do I still file?

•Yes, you still file and report all your earnings. Washington ESD needs to track your work activity even if you don't qualify for benefits that week.

The Washington ESD weekly claim system usually asks about your job search activities too. Make sure you're keeping track of your work search contacts because they require a certain number per week.

•How many job contacts do I need per week? I haven't been keeping good records.

•It's usually 3 job search activities per week, but check your specific requirements in your eServices account. Keep detailed records of who you contacted and when.

•they can audit your job search log at any time so definitely keep good records. i got randomly selected for review and had to provide all my documentation

I always file mine on Sunday evenings after 8 PM when the system is less busy. Takes maybe 5-10 minutes if you have all your information ready.

•Same here! Sunday nights are definitely better than trying to file first thing Sunday morning.

•Good tip about timing. I'll try Sunday evening next week.

Don't forget that if you don't file your weekly claim, you won't get paid for that week and you can't go back and file it later. Washington ESD is pretty strict about the filing deadlines.

•Wait, you can't file late claims at all? What if you were sick or had an emergency?

Sophia Clark
•There are some exceptions for good cause but you'd need to contact Washington ESD to request late filing. Better to just file on time every week.

•This is exactly why having Claimyr helped me so much. When I had questions about missed weeks, I could actually talk to an ESD agent instead of guessing.

Pro tip: set up a recurring reminder on your phone for Sunday mornings. I used to forget sometimes and it caused problems with my payments.

•Great idea! I'll set a reminder right now.

•I have mine set for Sunday at 7 AM with a backup reminder Monday morning just in case.

The questions on the weekly claim are pretty straightforward. Did you work, how much did you earn, are you able and available for work, did you look for work. Just answer honestly.

•What does 'able and available' mean exactly? I keep seeing that phrase.

Justin Evans
•It means you're physically and mentally able to work and you're available to accept work if offered. If you're sick or on vacation, you might not be considered available.

I've been filing weekly claims for 8 months now. The system is usually pretty reliable but sometimes it glitches on Sunday mornings. If you get error messages, try again later in the day.

One thing that confused me at first - the benefit week runs Sunday to Saturday, but you file the claim starting the following Sunday. So there's always a one week lag between the week you're claiming and when you file.

Harper Hill
•That's exactly what was confusing me! So I'll never be filing for the current week, always the previous week.

Benjamin Johnson
•Exactly right. You're always filing for the week that already ended.

If you ever have issues with your weekly claim or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about filing problems, I highly recommend checking out Claimyr. I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through to anyone until I used their service. Really worth it when you need actual help.

•That's exactly why I used it. The regular ESD phone system is basically impossible. Claimyr actually got me connected to someone who could help.

Keep copies or screenshots of your weekly claim confirmations. Sometimes there are system errors and you need proof that you filed on time.

Harper Hill
•Good point about keeping records. I hadn't thought about saving confirmation screenshots.

•yeah definitely save those confirmations. i had to prove i filed a claim once when there was a system glitch

The weekly claim filing is actually pretty quick once you get the hang of it. Most weeks it only takes a few minutes unless you had unusual income or work situations to report.

•That's reassuring. I was worried it would be complicated every week.

•Nah, it's mostly the same questions every week. Gets routine pretty fast.

Don't stress too much about the exact timing as long as you file sometime between Sunday and Saturday for the previous week. The important thing is not to miss filing completely.
