Thanks everyone for all the detailed information about benefit amounts! This thread has been way more helpful than anything I found on the Washington ESD website. I feel much more confident about filing my claim now.
Just want to add that if anyone gets stuck in adjudication or has complicated benefit calculation issues, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier really does work. I used it when I had wage discrepancies and the agent I spoke with was able to explain exactly how they calculated my benefit amount and what documentation I needed to provide. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human being who can look at your specific situation.
You also need to be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S. They'll verify your work authorization as part of the eligibility process.
If you have any questions about whether your specific situation qualifies, it's worth calling Washington ESD or using one of those callback services. Better to know upfront than file and get denied later.
For anyone still confused about this - yes you owe federal taxes on unemployment, no you don't owe Washington state taxes (since we don't have state income tax), and yes you should either have taxes withheld or save money for tax time. It's really that simple.
Just want to add - if you can't afford to pay your tax bill when you file, don't just ignore it. The IRS has payment plans and hardship programs. It's always better to communicate with them than to hope they forget about you.
Hope you don't need to use any of this info but it's smart to know ahead of time. The unemployment system can be overwhelming when you're already stressed about losing your job.
The most important thing is to file your claim immediately if you do lose your job. Don't wait around trying to figure out if you qualify - let Washington ESD make that determination. You can always appeal if they deny you incorrectly.

Last resort if you can't get through - try using that Claimyr thing people mentioned. I was hesitant about paying for something like that but after 2 weeks of getting nowhere on my own, it was worth it to finally talk to a real person at Washington ESD who could explain exactly what was happening with my claim.

•I'm definitely considering it if I don't hear anything in the next few days. Seems like several people here have had success with it.

•Yeah, I wish I had known about it sooner instead of wasting so much time trying to get through the regular phone lines.

Hope you get this resolved quickly! Benefit payment control is scary when you first see it but like others have said, it's usually something that can be fixed once you know what Washington ESD needs from you.
