When do you claim unemployment for the week - Washington ESD timing questions
I'm new to filing unemployment and confused about the weekly claim timing. Do I file my weekly claim at the beginning of the week I'm claiming for, or at the end after the week is over? Like if I want to claim for this current week, do I file now or wait until Sunday? I don't want to mess up my benefits by filing at the wrong time. The Washington ESD website isn't super clear about this.

You file AFTER the week ends. So for the week of Monday-Sunday, you would file your weekly claim starting the following Sunday. Washington ESD opens up the weekly claim filing on Sunday morning for the previous week.

•Thanks! So I'm always filing for the week that just ended, not the current week I'm in?

•Exactly right. You're reporting what already happened, not what you expect to happen.

Just to be clear on the schedule - Washington ESD weekly claims open every Sunday morning around 6 AM and you have until the following Saturday night to file. Most people file Sunday or Monday to get their payment processed faster.

•I always file Sunday morning right when it opens up. Gets processed by Tuesday usually.

•Good to know about the timing window. I was worried I had to file on a specific day.

ugh the whole weekly claim thing is so confusing when you start. I remember calling Washington ESD like 20 times trying to get through to ask this exact question. Their phone system is impossible

•I had the same problem trying to reach someone at Washington ESD! Ended up using Claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent. They have this video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that but might try it. Getting hung up on constantly is driving me crazy.

The key thing to remember is you're always looking backwards. Week ending Sunday gets claimed starting the next Sunday. Week ending the following Sunday gets claimed starting that next Sunday, etc.

•this makes sense when you think about it. how could you report your job search activities for a week that hasn't finished yet?

•True, I guess I was overthinking it. You need the full week of info to report.

Also important - if you don't file your weekly claim by Saturday night, you forfeit that week's benefits. Washington ESD doesn't let you go back and claim missed weeks (with very few exceptions).

•Wait, so if I forget to file one week I just lose that money completely?

•Pretty much yes. There are some exceptions for good cause but they're hard to prove. Better to just set a reminder.

•I missed filing once because I was sick and Washington ESD wouldn't let me claim it later. Lost a whole week of benefits.

Pro tip: set up a recurring phone reminder for Sunday mornings. I do mine at 8 AM every Sunday so I don't forget to file my weekly claim.

•That's a great idea. I'll set that up right now.

•I do the same thing! Sunday morning coffee and weekly claim filing is my routine now.

One thing that confused me at first - you can file your weekly claim even if you worked some hours that week. You just report the hours and earnings and Washington ESD calculates if you still get partial benefits.

•Good point. So I should still file even if I picked up a few hours of temp work?

•Yes, definitely still file. Just be honest about the hours and gross earnings. Washington ESD will reduce your benefit amount accordingly but you might still get something.

The Washington ESD online system is pretty straightforward once you get used to it. Just make sure you have all your job search contacts ready before you start filing.

•How many job search contacts do I need per week?

ApolloJackson
•Depends on your situation but typically 3 per week. Check your individual requirements in your account.

•Some people are exempt from job search if they're on standby with their employer. Check if that applies to you.

been filing weekly claims for months now and it becomes second nature. The key is just being consistent with the timing and honest about your activities.

•Agreed. I've never had issues as long as I file on time and report everything accurately.

If you ever have trouble accessing the weekly claim system, sometimes clearing your browser cache helps. The Washington ESD site can be glitchy.

•Or try a different browser. I had issues with Chrome but Firefox worked fine.

•Yeah the Washington ESD website definitely has its quirks. Sometimes logging out completely and back in fixes weird errors.

Just remember - file after the week ends, be honest about work and job search, and don't skip weeks. Those are the basics that will keep you out of trouble.

One last thing - if you're ever confused about Washington ESD procedures, their website has some helpful tutorials. But honestly calling can be faster if you can get through.

•Getting through is the hard part! I mentioned Claimyr earlier but it's seriously been a game changer for reaching Washington ESD agents when I have questions.

•I'll have to check that out. The regular phone number is basically useless during busy times.
