When can I file my weekly unemployment claim in Washington ESD?

I'm confused about the timing for filing my weekly claim with Washington ESD. I got approved for benefits last week but I'm not sure when I'm supposed to file my first weekly claim. Do I file it immediately after getting approved or do I wait until Sunday? And then after that, when do I file each week? I don't want to mess this up and lose my benefits.

You file your weekly claim every Sunday for the week that just ended (Sunday through Saturday). So if you got approved on a Wednesday, you'd wait until the following Sunday to file your first weekly claim covering that partial week.

Ok so I wait until Sunday to file for the week that's ending? That makes sense, thank you!

Yeah exactly, and make sure you file every Sunday even if you worked some hours that week

I had the same confusion when I first started filing. The weekly claim is always filed on Sunday for the previous week. You can file anytime on Sunday but I usually do it first thing in the morning to get it out of the way.

Do you know what time on Sunday the system opens up for filing?

I think it's available starting at 6 AM on Sunday but don't quote me on that exact time

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about filing, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

That sounds helpful! I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days with no luck.

Never heard of that service but if it helps people get through to ESD that's amazing

Important detail: you have to file by 11:59 PM on Tuesday night or you'll miss that week's payment. So Sunday is when you CAN file, but you have until Tuesday to get it done. Don't wait too long though because the system can be slow sometimes.

Good to know about the Tuesday deadline! I was worried I had to file exactly on Sunday.

Yep I learned that the hard way when I forgot to file one week and tried on Wednesday - too late!

Also just FYI, when you file your weekly claim you'll need to answer questions about whether you looked for work, if you worked any hours, if you were available for work, etc. Be honest about everything because they can check.

What kind of work search do I need to do? I haven't started looking yet because I just got approved.

You need to do 3 work search activities per week and keep a log. Check the WorkSourceWA website for approved activities.

ugh the whole system is so confusing! why cant they just make it simple like file every monday or something consistent

0 coins

I think it's because they process payments in batches and Sunday gives them the full business week to process

still annoying though

One more thing - if you miss filing a weekly claim, you can usually file it late but you might have to explain why you missed the deadline. It's better to just set a reminder on your phone for every Sunday.

Good idea about the phone reminder. I'll set that up right now.

Yeah I have a recurring alarm every Sunday at 8 AM that says 'FILE WEEKLY CLAIM' lol

Just want to add that if you're on standby status (like if you're temporarily laid off but expecting to be called back), you still need to file weekly claims. The process is the same.

I'm not on standby but good to know for others reading this thread!

0 coins

Yeah I was on standby for 3 months and still had to file every week even though I wasn't job searching

Pro tip: if the Washington ESD website is running slow on Sunday morning (which happens sometimes), try filing later in the day or Monday morning. You have until Tuesday night so no need to stress if Sunday is glitchy.

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind for this Sunday.

Yeah Sunday mornings can be brutal on their servers with everyone filing at once

If anyone needs to talk to Washington ESD about weekly claim questions, I'll mention Claimyr again since it really helped me get through when I had filing issues. Much easier than spending hours on hold.

How much does that service cost? Seems too good to be true

It's worth checking out their website for details. For me it was worth it to actually talk to someone at ESD

Make sure you have all your info ready when you file - social security number, any wages you earned that week, any job contacts you made. It goes faster if you're prepared.

Good point about being prepared. I'll gather all that info before Sunday.

Yeah and write down your work search activities as you do them during the week so you don't forget

been filing weekly claims for 6 months now and it becomes routine after a few weeks. just remember sunday-tuesday window and you'll be fine

Thanks for the reassurance! Hoping I won't need to file for 6 months but good to know it gets easier.

Yeah it really does become automatic after a while

One last thing - when you file, pay attention to any messages or alerts in your account. Sometimes Washington ESD will ask for additional information and you need to respond quickly or your payments might stop.

Salim Nasir

•

Will do! I'll make sure to check for messages every time I log in.

Yeah I missed a message once and it took weeks to get my payments restarted

Overall the weekly filing process is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Just stick to the Sunday-Tuesday schedule and answer all questions honestly. You'll be fine!

Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much more confident about filing this Sunday.
